The Tribune LOCAL tribtown.com THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2014 A3 mf-si2 Seymour standouts City chamber honors businesses, individuals Besides Teacher of the Year, the Greater Seymour Chamber of Commerce presented several awards to individuals, businesses and a coalition focused on promoting education during its 83rd annual dinner and awards banquet Wednesday. In 1974, Ed Larrison purchased the eatery and changed the name. He operated the business for more than 20 years until his children, Liz and Kevin Larrison, took over in 1996. The iconic diner served as a film set for the movie "Falling from Grace," starring John Mellencamp, and regularly is visited by Mellencamp fans. Larrison's Diner is not only a great place to eat, but it's also helped put downtown Seymour on the map, and that is why the family-operated business deserves the Small Business of the Year Award, chamber President Bill Bailey said. The restaurant, known for its cheeseburgers with grilled onions, fries and hand-dipped milkshakes, opened in the mid-1 940s as Hart's In 2010, the Jackson County Education Coalition was formed as a partnership between education, business, government and community leaders in an effort to create a local comprehensive learning system from kindergarten through lifelong adult education.

Two years later, the coalition appointed Dan Hodge as its executive director to begin implementing programs to achieve education goals. That success is ongoing with continued growth and expansion of the Jackson County Learning Center, the creation of a new school-to-work initiative with Aisin USA and the funding of preschool programs in the county. In presenting the Rising Star Award to Twisted Crew Brewing chamber President Bill Bailey shared the story of how the successful business started from a family vacation. In 2006, Terry and Suzannah Miller of Seymour traveled to Oregon and toured some craft breweries. "When Terry came home, he began brewing his own beer in five-gallon containers in the kitchen," Bailey said.

"When Suzannah decided that a home should smell like fruity candles and fresh laundry instead of yeast and hops, Terry set up his operation in their garage." In 201 1 they moved to their present location on West Second Street, where they now brew in 35-gallon batches, producing 440 gallons of beer a week. "Terry's talent for craft brewing has been noticed amazingly quickly," Bailey said. In the past two years, Twisted Crew has won several state awards for its brews and has marketed products in other areas, including Columbus and Indianapolis. AARON PIPER I THE TRIBUNE Suzannah Miller with Twisted Crew Brewing Co. fills a growler last summer for a customer. The craft beer brewing company won an award Wednesday from the Greater Seymour Chamber of Commerce. The President's Award is not given out every year and is reserved for special recognition, Bailey said. This year, he said, Ruth Ann Rebber fit the bill.

As past executive director of Jackson County United Way and former president of Seymour Main Street, Rebber has worked tirelessly to make Seymour a better place to live, chamber President Bill Bailey said. During her time of leadership, the Jackson County United Fund became the United Way of Jackson County, and in 1 998 she received a Lilly Endowment grant to convert the former Hook's building downtown into the Community Agency Building. "When you think of people in Seymour that are dedicated and committed to making this town better, you have to put Ruth Ann Rebber as the measure for everyone else," one community leader said in nominating Rebber. "She is someone who, when they set their mind on something, leads by example," a Main Street board member added. Now retired, Rebber continues to volunteer her time and talents to Seymour Main Street, her church and her family.

"For her many years of tireless commitment to the needs of Jackson County's children, seniors and support agencies, for her leadership in making Seymour Main Street the community asset it is and for setting the example of what servant leadership is about, I am honored to present the President's Award to Ruth Ann Rebber," Bailey said. organization's assets from $4 million to more than $12 million. He also was a principal partner in creating the Jackson County Learning Center. "Bud's leadership style reflects his naval and ministerial backgrounds," a foundation board member said. "He has a heart for service and a warrior's determination." Bailey recognized Walther's "service to Seymour and Jackson County, his management and stewardship in the growth of the Community Foundation of Jackson County and leadership in the creation of the Jackson County Learning Center." Receiving the chamber's Citizenship Award is the perfect high note to end Bud Walter's 14-year career as president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Jackson County, chamber President Bill Bailey said.

Having served his country in the U.S. Navy, Walther retired as director of special intelligence for the supreme allied commander of NATO. He then became an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and serves as head pastor for Crothersville Church of Christ. In 2000, he became the leader of the Community Foundation and has increased the BRIEFS LOCAL STOCKS OF LOCAL INTEREST Free Retirement Plan Review 0.12 Index: Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) Closing Price: 16,198.41 IND 18.75 AVG Date: February 26, 2014 at the Columbus Learning Center, 4555 Central Ave. Area employers will share job and internship information with students, alumni and individuals visiting the Columbus Learning Center.
