As best-seller biographical trash-readers have known for recent years, the dirtiest biographies no longer are disdained but devoured by the constantly unrequited gossip-famished. Liz Taylor's loves transient and relatively permanent proliferate in book and headline and intimate detail; Shelley Winters snitched on lovers galore. Gore has polished, or would that be "roughened," his set routine as he jogs, with intent to run for senator from California, to be filed under the label Fat Chance. Betimes, Gore knocks with computerized redundancy the duly elected resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

thus: "Western Europeans hate Americans more than the Russians," a statement we find expediently outrageous as Gore bolsters his expediently radical view (he smites conservatives, liberals, the Vatican, all political creeds). Gore plainly finds his old in-law family feud with the Kennedy Dynasty ftho if anyone brings it up on TV, Gore hauls out his same old nasty routine) and has topicalized, varied and scattered his prefabricated atom bomb-at-clay pigeons' attack: "When Nancy Reagan heard about the cheese lines, she said, 'Let 'em eat He continues his euphemistic attacks on the media with his latest popgunning, a la, "The New York Times I always lie to them and they always lie to me." The quite wealthy Gore red herrings his own fortune as he takes on the rich: "Corporations are no longer paying taxes it is now official." That will be news to the Fortune 500 who might love to enjoy such official erasure including the many owners of TV stations and networks which permit such Vidaling of their taxes; but then Gore seems to have just moved into the category of the viciously facetious caricaturing of fact that his act must be filed under comedy of the Absurd. Gore's dissection of discarded corporate taxation sets up this ultimate cynical critical triviality: "Reagan has done what he was sent to do: He's brought back 'Death Valley His studio audiences now that he's heart-set on taking his act to that other ultimate stage of political hyperbole, the U.S. Senate, receive these essentially harmless mea-taxings with considerably less than respect and serious admiration, but with guffaws. His act now elicits no intellectual nods and applause even as do Bob Hope and Johnny Carson.

Carson's opening TV monologues similarly contain such broad distortions to energize a bigger guffaw each time but at least Carson telegraphs the intent of such gag-written garbled truths by knowing leer and immediate negative head shaking meaning he doesn't quite mean it; but of course he just might. Of course they're the work of his hired sense of humor anyway. Vidal also does hit the target when he notes unemployment is the biggest current problem, which does make Gore the last to discover that "comic" topic; but he adds, "In Washington there are 5,000 people sleeping in the streets." Is that funny?
