Asbury Park PressTuesday, February 26, 1991 C5 7 Jones, Johnson power Neptune Yankees' Eiland wants spot in starting rotation I PRESS STAFF REPORT DERRICK JONES scored a game-high 20 points and Anthony Johnson added 18 as Neptune held off host Monmouth, 69-68, last night to win a New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Central Jersey Group III first-round game. Neptune travels to Raritan tomorrow for a 7 p.m. game. Gary Birch led Monmouth (14-8) with 19 points. LONG BRANCH 59, WALL 33: Lester Taylor scored 13 points and three other players reached double figures as the Green Wave won a Central Jersey Group III game.

Long Branch will travel to North Hunterdon tomorrow for a 7 p.m. game. ST. ROSE 68, ST. MARY'S (SOUTH AM-BOY) 58: John Fairchild scored a team-high 15 points and Brian Taylor added 14 points and six steals as the Roses won a South Jersey Parochial game.

St. Rose will travel to St. Augustine Basketball Prep Friday for a 7 p.m. game. MATER DEI 43, MOORESTOWN FRIENDS 38: Bobby Lambe paced the Seraphs with 10 points and Kevin Condon added eight points and 14 rebounds in a South Jersey Parochial win.

Mater Dei travels to Bishop Eustace Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game. OCEAN CITY 96, CENTRAL 64: Derrick Yeomen scored 34 points, including 14 in the first quarter, to lead the Red Raiders to a South Jersey Group III win. Charlie Fischer led the Golden Eagles with 20 points. VOORHEES 58, OCEAN 50: Marc Cahill scored a game-high 18 points to vault the Vikings to a Central Jersey Group III win.

Brett Vandermark led the Spartans with 14 points. IN GIRLS BASKETBALL KEANSBURG 69, DUNELLEN 33: Tina Colyer led all scorers with 33 points, TR North skaters down St. Baseball So why is he battling for the fifth spot in the rotation? The reasons are veteran pitchers Mike Witt, Tim Leary, Scott Sanderson, Chuck Cary and Andy Hawkins. The Yankees made three-year contractual commitments to Witt and L-eary to re-sign them as free agents. They acquired Sanderson from Oakland and made a two-year commitment to him.

Cary is the only left-hander in the group and the Yankees believe he is on the verge of becoming a consistent winner. That leaves Hawkins, 31, trying to rebound from a 5-12 season and a career-high 5.37 ERA, vying with Eiland for the fifth spot in the rotation. Hawkins is entering the final season of a three-year, contract. The Yankees attempted to trade him during the offseason without result. Releasing him would be an expensive decision since they still owe Hawkins $1.4 million.

They've already released left-hander Dave LaPoint at a cost of $900,000. The National League began taking a closer look at potential expansion spots yesterday with stops in Miami and Orlando. The committee is scheduled to visit St. Petersburg today the search for two new teams for the 1993 season intensifies. The other cities in contention for an expansion team Denver, Buffalo and Washington likely will host visits in March or April.

Since American League teams must approve the expansion cities by a majority vote, they could block a National League move to put both franchises in Florida. AL teams have hinted they might demand financial compensation from the NL in exchange for their approval.

St. Louis left-hander Joe Magrane was in St. Louis to have his sore elbow examined by Dr. Stan London. "We should know something within 48 hours or so," Cardinals' spokesman Brian Bartow said.

Kansas City pitcher Mark Gubicza, coming back from shoulder surgery, has modified his prediction that he'll be ready for the Kansas City Royals on opening day. Danny Darwin, who missed the first two Boston workouts as he honored a Little League commitment in Houston, threw from the bullpen mound for. about 10 minutes. Darwin signed as a free agent with the Red Sox in December for $11.8 million over four years. The Texas Rangers opened spring training camp on Monday with 24 pitchers reporting, but one of them was absent Nolan Ryan.

In keeping with his strict workouts program, Ryan, 44, who led the American League in strikeouts, won his 300th. game and pitched his sixth no-hitter last year, won't arrive from Alvin, Texas, until March 1. Cincinnati catcher Joe Oliver is responding so well to physical therapy for an inflamed shoulder muscle that the Reds could cut his recovery time. sale. $40,000 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PITCHER DAVE EILAND is convinced he has earned an opportunity to open the season in the New York Yankees' rotation. The good news for him is the Yankees agree. "There isn't any question he's put numbers on the board to warrant an opportunity in the big leagues," manager Stump Merrill said yesterday. That, however, does not necessarily mean that Eiland, International League Pitcher of the Year last season, will be one of the Yankees' five starting pitchers on Opening Day.

"You're in a game where sometimes you don't control your own destiny, particularly in the early stages of your career," Merrill said. "A lot of times, you play at a level where you don't think you should be." Eiland, 24, is convinced he should not be at the Triple-A level for another day. "I think proving I'm ready to go to the next step, the major leagues, is over," he said. For evidence, Eiland pointed to his standing as the International League's leading winner last season with a 16-5 record. He compiled a 2.87 ERA and led the league with 11 complete games and three shutouts.

That earned Eiland a promotion to the big leagues in September and he produced a 2-1 record with a 3.56 ERA in five starts. In his first start, against Texas, he permitted four hits and no earned runs in 8Vs innings. "I came up in September and pitched as well as anybody," said Eiland, who was helped by the development of a sinker. 'Rocket' puts speed on display By ELLIOTT DENMAN PRESS STAFF WRITER NEW YORK The East's fastest undergraduates can expect to see The Rocket's red glare. Raghib "The Rocket" Ismail soon of the National Football League still has a point or two to prove as a college athlete and one of them is his status as a world-class sprinter.

And so the heralded Notre junior from Wilkes Barre, puts his speed on display in the 55-meter dash at the 70th annual Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of Amer-ica Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday and Sunday at Princeton University's Jadwin Gymnasium. "The Rocket" has already dashed 55 meters in the sensational time of 6.07 seconds at the Central Collegiate Championships at Purdue Feb. 9. That clocking alone makes him the heavy favorite to regain the IC4A dash crown he won at Princeton as a freshman in 1989 (but relinquished when he stayed out of track last year to focus on his studies). Larry Byrne, the IC4A meet director, calls Ismail "the hottest college athlete in many years." "He is a bona fide sprinter," believe me," Byrne said at yesterday's meeting of the New York Track Writers Association.

While his fiscal future is in football, Ismail has long kept part of his heart in track and field. "Ismail has been a sprint champion since his scholastic days at E.L. Meyers High School in Wilkes Barre," Byrne reminded the gathering. As a Meyers High senior in 1988, he won Pennsylvania's state 55-meter title indoors and the 100-meter crown outdoors. He earned an invitation to the Golden West Meet in Sacramento, and placed second in the 100-meter final against the nation's best seniors.

He won the '89 IC4A in 6.34 but expects to go far faster at Jadwin. The 6.07 ranks him 11th on the all-time world list, ninth on the U.S. list, and as the seventh fastest-ever collegian. The Ismail family track team goes beyond Raghib. A leading contender in the 55-meter hurdles is brother Qadry Ismail of Syracuse nicknamed "The Missile" who took the Big East gold medal Feb.

The Colts' first-year boys swim team fought Shawnee to the wall in every lane befoie losing, 87-83, in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Section II A Division opening round at Burlington County College yesterday. Ocean, the only other Shore area team to qualify for the state tournament, lost to Moorestown, 109-61, in the Section II Division tournament. Trailing after eight events, CBA needed to finish first and second in the 400-yard freestyle relay to win the meet. The Colts' Raul Damas, Tom Brennan, Tom Wilkens and Shawn Torbert won the relay in 3:37.84, but Shawnee (3:40.19) edged out CBA's second relay team (3:41.19) to win the meet. "I knew it would be close and, in all honesty, I thought it would come down to the last relay," said CBA coach Mike Sullivan.

"I knew we would be strong, because they used their good sprint freestylists earlier in the meet. I didn't realize, however, that it would come down to the second 400 free relay. That was one of the longest seconds of my life. The whole meet was like that. That's what was good about it." CBA took a six-point lead after the 200 individual medley, the second event.

Shawnee took the top three places in the 50 free before CBA came back to finish first, third and fifth in the 100 butterfly to tie the score at 39-39. CBA was led by Tom Bennan, who won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.51 and the 500 freestyle in Tom Wilkens, who won the 200 individual med'ey (2:02.39) and 100 breaststroke and Shawn Torbert, who won the 100 butterfly in 56.45. Leading Ocean were Brendon O'Neill, who won the 100 butterfly (56.2) and swam the third leg of the Spartans' winning 400 free relay, and Bill Hulse, who placed second in the individual medley (2:12.0) and 500 freestyle and swam the breast stroke of Ocean's 200-medley relay team that took second Shawnee 87, CBA 83 200 medley relay: Shawnee (Todd Menegus, Abruaese.
