i Margaret Mayfield, 30, said that when Ste-S phan Peter Morin, 34, abducted her at gunpoint f4 to department store parking lot last Friday after escaping a police dragnet, "his eyes were filled jrith hatred and hurt, like a wild animal." Jv But, she said, after she preached to him, read from her personal book of Bible quotations 1 and persuaded him to go to an evangelist, Morin unloaded his .38 caliber pistol and swapped the cartridges for the book. Morin, who is suspected of killing up to 20 ybung women in nine states, then hugged her, kissed her on the forehead and smiled as he Morin, a native of Providence, R.I., has been charged with the killing of Carrie Scott, 21, in San Antonio last Friday, the slaying of two young women at St. George, Utah, and he is wanted for questioning in numerous rapes, kidnappings and slayings in nine states, police said. Miss Mayfield said Morin cried and told her his life story including a deep-seated hatred for his mother during the time she was a hostage. She said he grew calmer as she told him about Christ, read from the Scriptures and played him tapes of Fort Worth evangelist Kenneth Copeland.

Miss Mayfield said it was only chance that had led her to take the book and tapes with her on her shopping trip. She said at one point during her ordeal Morin took her to the bank where she got $300, gave it to Morin, then drove him 40 miles northwest to Kerrville where he caught a bus. She said Morin knew that she likely would call police, and told her he was going to Fort Worth to "lay down his gun" on Copeland's desk. Copeland, who calls himself an advocate ot "victorious Christian living," termed Morin's acceptance of Christianity during his time with Miss Mayfield "miraculous." He has been trying to visit Morin at the Bexar County Jail where he is held without bond. "I asked him if he would forgive his little son if the son had done all the things he had done," Miss Mayfield said.

A couple wanted in connection with eight abductions in four states surrendered peacefully yesterday after holding a family hostage for several hours, the FBI said. Negotiations by the FBI, federal prosecutors and two private attorneys led to the pre-dawn surrender yesterday of Harry R. Creta and Gail E. Baker, authorities said. The FBI said the two had taken Phillip and Donna Mirabile and their three-year-old daughter hostage at their home.

The family was unharmed. The FBI learned that Creta, 33, and Ms. Baker, 23, were in Virginia Beach shortly before 11 p.m Wednesday, said FBI spokesman Jack Wagner. Wagner would not elaborate on what led the couple to the Mirabiles' house or the FBI to Creta, a former Virginia Beach homebuilder and financier of a pizza chain. Wagner said when agents first knocked at the door, Creta told them he had three guns and was holding the Mirables hostage.

But after the standoff, Wagner said only that "weapons were involved," declining to say what they were. Creta, '33, was indicted last February by a Chesapeake grand jury on charges stemming from an investigation into a multimillion-dollar drug ring. He had failed to appear in May before a federal grand jury investigating the operation. -s WE SIU I "3 MPi' 'D I MnmrTC I introducing two hew acti vision game programs with savings on all our video games by activision Turn your home into a thrilling arcade with all the excitement and adventure of two new video game programs from Activision for your Atari home video computer.
