From 1970 to 1985 he was the owner and operator of the Brookwood Bar and Lounge, Jackson Township, the Gilmor Newstand, Freehold, and Louis's Bar, Middletown Township. JON S. GOULD 30, of Riverdale, whose father lives in OCEANPORT, died yesterday in Honesdale, Pa. from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was a truck driver for the Martin Ice Cream Company, Bloomfield. He was a member of the Riverdale Adult Recreation Program.

Mr. Gould was born in Passaic and lived most of his life in Riverdale. 4 CLAUDIO ARRAU, 88, the Chilean musician, considered one of the best classical pianists of the century, died yesterday following emergency surgery Saturday at a hospital in Muerzzuschlag, Austria, 60 miles south of Vienna. His nephew, Agustin Arrau, said from New York that the pianist died from complications of the surgery, to correct an intestinal blockage. The Chilean government decreed that today would be a national day of mourning for Arrau, who had been in Europe preparing for his first performances in two years. Arrau arrived in Austria on Wednesday and was scheduled to open Muerzzuschlag's renovated museum, named after German composer Johannes Brahms, with a piano recital Friday. But the appearance had to be canceled because of an illness, the Austria Press Agency in Vienna reported.

He was also scheduled to perform next Friday in Dusseldorf, Germany, on the final night of the Schumann Festival. The concerts were to be Arrau's first in two years. He had suspended all performances after the death in 1989 of his German-born wife, Ruth Schneider. He was considered one of the best pianists of the century, and was noted for his interpretations of Beethoven's works. Arrau was born in Chillan, a city 250 miles south of Santiago, Chile, on Feb.

6, 1903. A child prodigy, he gave his first concert at age 5. He won a government scholarship to study abroad after a Santiago concert he performed at age 7 attended by then-President Pedro Montt. He went to the Stern Conserva- tory of Music in Berlin, studying under Martin Krause, a student of Franz Liszt. He returned only sporadically to his native country.

His last visit was in 1984, when he gave a series of widely acclaimed concerts. During the tour, Arrau, who worked often to support of human rights groups, refused to discuss his stand toward the thendictatorship of Augusto Pinochet and avoided mention of the general or his government. The pianist held some of his country's highest honors, including the Order of the Aztec Eagle, awarded in 1982. In 1983, he won Chile's National Arts Prize and also the UNESCO Music Award. Arrau was a close friend of composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein and introduced him to a fellow Chilean, Felicia Montealegre, who became Bernstein's wife.

Bernstein sought Arrau out for a 1976 recording in Munich to benefit Amnesty International, said Bernstein's former manager, Harry Kraut.
