CONTACT US To place an In Memoriam 643-3778 MONMOUTH HERBERT J. LACY 79, of Bridgewater, formerly of MATAWAN, died Wednesday, May 7, at Raritan Health Extended Care Center. He was a retired accountant for many years. He graduated in 1949 from Seton Hall University, South Orange, with a degree in accounting. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Aberdeen, and the American Legion, Trenton. Born in Montclair, he resided in Matawan for many years before moving to Bridgewater five years ago. He was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn C. Slattery Lacy; and a brother, Paul Lacy. Surviving are three daughters, Maureen Lacy, Colleen LacyNovak, and Kathy Williams; a son, Darryn Lacy; a sister, Claire Jones; and several grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Maplewood. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral at 10:15. a.m.

William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. ARTHUR S. MALLE, 86, of MIDDLETOWN, died Wednes- day, May 7, at Avante at Red Bank, Red Bank. He was a millwright for the E.

Osborn Red Bank, for 34 years. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Infantry in Europe from 1943 to 1946 as a staff sergeant. Born in Staten Island, he lived in Red Bank before moving to Middletown 54 years ago. He was predeceased by his parents, James H.

and Serena L. Parsons Malle. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Rose Malle; a nephew, Richard F. Malle of Ocean Grove; and two nieces, Carol Haliski of Delray Beach, and Barbara Gardner of Madison, Miss. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m.

OCEAN BERYL C. ZIMMERMANN BENNETT, 74, of Rutherford, whose daughter lives in POINT PLEASANT, died Wednesday, May 7. She was a homemaker and a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, East Rutherford. After high school, she studied singing, then performed in plays with a theater group that toured the country.

Born in Carlstadt, she lived in Rutherford for 50 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Louis F. Bennett; three brothers, George Zimmermann Robert Zimmermann, and Ralph J. Zimmermann; and a sister, Valerie Holmes. Surviving are a son, Keith L.

Bennett of Virginia Beach, two daughters, Beryl C. Marrero of Point Pleasant, and Cari B. Durso of Union City; and four grandchildren, Lauren, Tucker, Hannah and Lucas. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. today from Kimak Home, 425 Broad Carlstadt.

He retired from the Sheriff's Department in Freehold and was an officer with the Asbury Park and Long Branch police departments. He led a very active life until he died peacefully in his sleep. He recently celebrated his 91st birthday.

He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Frances Ruth, in 1990. TEEGAN. 83, of BRICK, died Thursday, May 8, at Laurelton Village, Brick. He was the general manager at IBM, Armonk, N.Y., for 30 years, retiring in 1984. He was a World War II veteran serving as captain of transportation for the U.S. Army.

He received his MBA at Boston University with postgraduate work at Harvard. He was a trustee and director at Portchester YMCA, and I a member of IBM Country Clubs in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Sands Point, N.Y. He was a member of New York City Traffic Managers Club and assistant transportation manager of IBM Corporation. 'He was past president of the Holy Name Society at St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Church, Wyckoff, and cofounder of its CCD program.

He was a member of the Men's Club of Lions Head South and a parishioner of the Visitation Church, Brick. Born in Port Penn, he lived in Wyckoff before moving to Brick 17 years ago. GLORIA C. "DOLLY" MC GINN. 64, of FARMING- DALE, died Thursday, May 8, at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. She was a telephone receptionist for K. Hovnanian, Red Bank, until her retirement in 2000.

She was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, Farmingdale. She was a member of the cancer support group at Jersey Shore Medical Center. Born in the Bronx, she had lived there before moving to Farmingdale 15 years ago. Surviving are a sister, Rosemary Amaral of Farmingdale; a nephew, Dave Amaral of Bradley Beach; a niece, Susan Townend of Farmingdale; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was a member of the Bradley Beach Senior Citizens Club. He was an irregular member of the Harpoon and Needle Club, Long Branch, and was a former chairman of the Lending Tool Library of the City of Orange. Born in Minsk, Russia, he lived in Orange and Bradley Beach before moving to Oakhurst in 1997.

He was 79. Heerwald spent about four decades with United Press and then UPI. Born in Billings, he grew up in Red Lodge, earned a journalism degree at the University of Montana, served in the Navy during World War II and attended Columbia University.

After moving to Seattle in the late 1940s he went from routine wire service work to covering state government in Olympia, and was bureau manager and state editor by 1961, a year before the world's fair in Seattle, a pivotal event 1 for the city. During the world's fair, Heerwald interviewed U.S. astronaut, John Glenn and Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, asking separately whether they had ex-' perienced some sort of epiphany or religious experience in orbit. Glenn: "I did have a feeling of being in the presence of something greater than mankind. Yeah." Titov, replying through an interpreter: "Do you mean did I see any angels? Nyet!" Heerwald was president of the Western Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists from 1963-64.

Survivors include his wife Rose, a brother and a sister. The Associated Press RUBY GRANT MARTIN. civil rights director under President Lyndon B. Johnson and a cabinet member in the administration of Gov. L.

Douglas Wilder, died Thursday, May 8, in Richmond, Va. She was 70. In 1967 she became the first director of the Office for Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. She was appointed Virginia's secretary of administration by Wilder in 1990.

A Cleveland native, Martin earned a law degree from Howard University Law School in 1959. At Howard, she was a classmate of Wilder, who would become the nation's first elected black governor in 1990. She planned and accompanied the governor on several trips to Africa to establish trade ties. After leaving state service in 1994 she was a consultant to North Carolina Gov. James B.

Hunt on trade with Africa. She came to Richmond in 1978 amid an already distinguished legal career, first as a staff attorney 1 for the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and then for the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. At the Office of Civil Rights, she was in charge of a federal school desegregation program and enforcing employment and affirmative-action programs of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

In the early 1970s, as counsel to the House Committee on the District of Columbia, she co-authored the bill that proposed home rule for the district.
