He said that "we modified it with the line that can carry color. And the color of the stroke can be varied. It can be very soft and light without appearing weak.

Or it can be very bold and strong without appearing ungraceful. "This was a big challenge and a big responsibility," said Girsen. "The reason one tends to be cautious, is because customers become very familiar, and you don't tamper with that easily. The customers have expectations." And the logo is the core of the corporate identity, he said. That aspect made Sears' manage ment cautious, he said.

"They wanted to be sure that what they were seeing was not replacing an old friend that was going to be missed," Girsen said. Girsen, the company president, said extensive surveys were conducted before and after the new typeface was designed. He said the new face was preferred 2-to-l over the old by both customers and employees. Sears' old logo was strong simply because it was familiar, he said, and Sears has "35 (million) to 40 million customers out there." -But the old logo was limited in terms of the size, colors and symbols that could be placed alongside it, Girsen said. The new typeface was designed to be versatile, bold, and progressive, he said.

The letters themselves all capitals display strength and boldness. They were italicized "to suggest a sense of controlled forward motion," which is appropriate for the retail industry because it changes so quickly, Girsen said. But Sears' typeface was a unique ij7i5 Edward R. Telling, chairman and chief executive officer, said the new logo reflects the personality of the recently introduced Sears' "Store of the Future," a three-year, $1.7 billion program bringing merchandising changes to 600 Sears stores. Redesigning the logo was a yearlong process in itself for Bob Girsen and Associates, a New York design business.

Standard Poor's index of 400 industrials rose 0.46 to 174.73, and SAP's 500-stock composite index was up 0.34 to 153.18. At the American Stock Exchange, the market value index rose 0.66 to 200.08.

Sears' fall catalog will no longer carry the traditional typeface surrounded by a box. Instead, the name of the world's largest retailer will appear in a custom-designed, slightly italicized version with lines drawn on the letters. It's the third logo in the company's 98-year history and replaces one that was used for 20 years. Changing 15 million catalogs, which are being shipped next week, was only part of the task involved. The company said the change eventually will extend to hundreds of millions of catalogs, products, credit cards, trucks, signs and paper goods across the nation.

First, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the respective exchanges monitor all aspects of trading among their member firms and the general public. This exchange provides a marketplace for commodities ranging from soy bean meal to kilos of gold. The CBOT also trades Treasury bond futures. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange, also known as the "Merc," houses the International Monetary Market and the Index and Option Market.
