Former mental patient charged with supplying false information The Associated Press recognized the suspect's voice. NEW BRUNSWICK A 45-year-old former mental patient has been charged with supplying false information that touched off a frantic police search in Middlesex County for 1 members of the Black Liberation Army. L.C. McGarrah was released on his own recognizance after he was charged Thursday night with giving false public alarm, Middlesex County Prosecutor Richard Rebeck said yesterday.

McGarrah, identified by Rebeck as a former mental patient at the Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital, was arrested by Edison police. Edison and New Brunswick police began a search for the suspect after realizing that information supplied in anonymous phone calls to State Police and Edison police had been a hoax. Rebeck and Edison Detective Lt. Angelo Bekiarian and New Brunswick Detective Jack Keller had listened to the police-recorded phone conversations with the tipster and In addition, police were able to trace the source of the phone calls to a telephone booth near McGarrah's home, Rebeck When police received the phone calls Wednesday night, a statewide alert was issued and officers in several Middlesex County communities began a frantic search for members of the BLA. The anonymous tipster told police he overheard a conversation in which heavily armed members of the BLA, including escaped convicted killer Joanne Chesimard, were heading to the Edison area to kill police officers.

Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur, has remained a fugitive since she escaped from prison in 1979 after her conviction for the 1973 murder of a state trooper.
