The DeLeo brothers guitarist Dean DeLeo and bassist Robert DeLeo grew up at the Jersey Shore and played all over the area in their earliest bands. Bassist Robert a member of the class of 1984 at Point Pleasant Boro High School (and onetime regular reader of the Asbury Park Press) was born in Montclair and grew up in Point Pleasant Beach. DeLeo recalled his Shore roots for CELEBS. iiK I fit A oil meticulously remove my shoes and inform them I do not have box cutters; I don't plan on hijacking a plane any time soon. So I was listening to really amazing, great music first-hand. I'd go up to my sister's room and she would be playing Cat Stevens or Crosby, Stills, Nash Young. Then I'd go over to my one brother's room and he'd be playing (Jimi) Hendrix. And then I'd go over to my other brother's room and he'd be playing Cream. So I was a sponge when I was little.

I was soaking all this up. That's what really influenced me to do what I do now. I mean, these people literally raised me. I've gotten a chance to meet and hang out with Aerosmith and Keith Richards. I don't know what else to say to these people but, "Thanks for raising me." Because literally, that's what it was like.

It really meant a lot to me. I think my brother and I both were really fortunate to grow up in that era that we did. What was the music scene like in the late '80s and early '90s, when Stone Temple Pilots were coming up and getting signed? Were you up against "hair metal?" Was it hard to put your music across? Yeah, it totally was. I remember back then, I had a shaved head in the early '90s. I remember trying to "pay to play." It was tough.

It was tough. You know, the L.A. scene was really bad. That's why we kind of went down to San Diego. There was a little more appreciation for what we were doing.

People were a little more into the music. It wasn't all the "L.A. arm fold" thing -where people are just sitting there with their arms folded. You know, (laughs) that was tough. Stone Temple Pilots are scheduled to perform at 8 p.m.

Friday at Convention Hall, Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park. $35; sold out. (732) 988-9660. Web: www.concertseast.com You and Dean used to play Shore bars. What places did you play? Well, Dean is five years older than I am, so I didn't really join his band until, probably, 1981, when I was still a junior in high school.

Dean was playing around in a band called the Sages Pages back in, probably, '78. They were playing places like Big Man's West, which was Clarence demons' place, with (Jon) Bon Jovi, which was spelled B-O-N-G-I-O-V-I. When I joined, we played the Ship Wheel in Brielle and then we played the Harbor Inn in Brielle right by the boat basin there. My relatives are the Bogans the Bogan's (Brielle) Basin there. Then we played Club Xanadu, which was up in Asbury.

Remember that? On Monday nights, we played The Stone Pony. There was a bar right next to there called Mother's. Remember Mother's? We played there. Let's see there was a place on (Route) 35 that we played too; I can't remember the name of it. There was a place down in Lavallette we played.

or 3 years old, 4 years old, and totally comprehending songs like "Brown Sugar" by the Rolling Stones on the radio, and Three Dog Night and Blood, Sweat and Tears and The Beatles. I think that was due to the fact that, you know, I'm the youngest. I'm the baby of the family. I have a lot of step- and half-brothers and sisters who hood, but I think due tdmy family and where I was a in my life, I think the guitarwas a natural thing for me to ick When you say Dean played with Bon Jovl were they actually in the same band? No, no. He backed Bon Jovi.

The Sages Pages backed Bon Jovi back in, probably, '79. Was there anything about the Jersey Shore that perhaps crept into your playing style? up, to kind of be my theppy and my communication, I don't think it was necessi ily bands or New Jersey buds that really influenced me. I was born in '66. So, you I think it was more or less I'd know, I can remember beig 2 2.
