EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) As thousands of onlookers cheered wildly, hockey superstar WAYNE GRETZKY and actress JANET JONES emerged from a downtown church Saturday as husband and wife. The couple were married in an elaborate ceremony that drew about 650 guests, a throng of casually dressed well-wishers outside the church, and hundreds of journalists. Crowds lined up several deep on both sides of Jasper Avenue, the main street in the Alberta capital, to get a glimpse of the participants in what was called Canada's version of a royal wedding. Gretzky, who has led the Edmonton Oilers to four Stanley Cup titles and holds dozens of National Hockey League records, arrived 30 minutes early for the ceremony. He was escorted by best man Eddie Mio, a former Oiler.

Miss Jones, who like her new husband is 27, is from Bridgeton, outside St. Louis. She has appeared in the films "American Anthem," "The Flamingo Kid," "A Chorus Line'' and' 'Police Academy 5." The guests and a bridal party of 22 witnessed the private ceremony inside St. Joseph's Basilica, a Roman Catholic church. Although Gretzky is an Anglican and Miss Jones is a Methodist, special permission was granted to hold the' ceremony in the basilica, which was blessed by Pope John Paul in a visit to Edmonton four years ago.

"Wayne is an exceptional person and has made a great contribution to the community," said the church's pastor, the Rev. Mike McCaffrey, in explaining why a non-Catholic ceremony was allowed. "We're not setting a precedent here. AH we're saying is that there are exceptions." Among the celebrities in attendance were hockey legends GORDIE HOWE and VLADISLAV TRETIAK, entertainers ALAN THICKE and DAVID FOSTER, and most of the Oilers. JACKSON, Miss.

AP Laserphoto Burt Reynolds Spence was discharged Friday from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he received the lungs of an 18-year-old Texas accident victim May 6. Spence had suffered from severe emphysema. The 18-year House veteran said at a news conference he will do all he can in Congress to encourage organ donation and increase public awareness of transplant programs. He promised to hit the campaign trail hard in September and said he didn't believe his health should be an issue in his race against Democrat JIM LEVENTIS. Spence said he gave a razzing to nurses who constantly told him to "breathe through your nose now and breathe deep." He had become accustomed to breathing through his mouth because of his deteriorated lungs.

"It's difficult to get used to psychologically I try not to be a pill, "he said. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) BURT REYNOLDS says he may have cracked another career if he runs out of acting roles. Reynolds, 52, prepared for his role as a safecracker in "Breaking In" by talking with former practitioners of the craft. "If this doesn't work out I can go into business for myself," he said Friday.

"I'm struck by how quiet these particular guys were. AP Laserphoto Madonna They're very intelligent." Reynolds said "Breaking In," which is being filmed here, would be released by year's end. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) DR. KARL MENNINGER, regarded by many as the dean of American psychiatry, observes his 95th birthday Friday, yielding ever so grudgingly to the infirmities of age and developing an awareness of his mortality.

"Life is a damn precious thing," he said. "My spool doesn't have much left on it." Menninger said he remains too engrossed in life to give much thought to dying. "If you were 95 years old, what would be on your mind? Dying. But I don't think about dying. Maybe I should," he said.

Menninger still has an office on the campus of Menninger, the sprawling treatment facility here that Karl, his father, DR CHARLES MENNINGER, and his brother, DR. WILLIAM C. MENNINGER, launched in 1925 as the Menninger Clinic. He will spend his birthday at a luncheon at a program he founded to provide families and homes for troubled children. He will also attend a dinner with his wife, then go to a concert in his honor to benefit a lecture series named for him.
