"Crosscountry Texas" Del Rio included in new computer program teaching Texas geography This year, school children at various points in Texas in grades 4 through 9 are discovering Del Rio as they learn about the Lone Star State through their Apple computers and a new geography program called "Crosscountry Texas." It is the first geography simulation that has been designed specifically for Texas schools. It is not in use in Del Rio, where school officials note only limited use of computers is made in education. "Crosscountry Texas" contains data on Del Rio in its information on 135 cities and towns and 55 of the major commodities of Texas. The program lets children take on the roles of truck drivers on a simulated journey around Texas. The Apple computer acts as their dispatcher and keeps track of expenses gas, food, hotel bills, repairs, etc.

The program focuses on the economic and political geography of Texas. The children pick up commodities that are important to the state, such as grapefruit, pecans and textiles. They must determine where to find them and then decide the best route to follow. "Crosscountry Texas" is a part of a series of bestselling geography programs published by Didatech Software Limited of Elaine, Wash. Other programs in the series are ''Crosscountry U.S.A./'"Crosscountry Canada," and "Crosscountry California." According to Paul Melhus, president of Didatech, the simulation of Texas was designed to be as realistic as possible.

"We wanted 'Crosscountry Texas' to be a unique educational experience. When kids are driving down the highway from Dallas to Houston, we show them a picture of rolling hills and farm land. When they cross from El Paso to Abilene their view shifts to a desert scene." Besides encouraging kids to sharpen their decision making skills, the program reinforces the consequences of their behavior on the road. Said Melhus, "We don't force kids to get gas, eat and sleep regularly, but if they don't, they might run out of gas between cities or get into an accident. Even speeding is allowed, but, of course, you might get pulled over and get a $50 ticket." "Crosscountry Texas" is available at most computer and software stores.

The price is S49.95 for the school version and $39.95 for a home version.
