Last night, they finally beat him.

Pete Harnisch outpitched Davis as the Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 for their fifth victory in six games. Davis, who began his career with the Orioles and helped them win the World Series in 1983, lost for the first time in six decisions against Baltimore. He gave up six runs, five of them earned, on eight hits in five innings. "This was probably the most frustrating game I've ever had," Davis said. "My control wasn't that bad, the pitches were all close.

But that's a part of the game I can't control." The five first Baltimore batters reached against Davis and Sam Horn's two-run single made it 4-0. Davis (1-2) wound up striking out five and walking two. Harnisch (2-0) allowed only two runners in the first six innings. He took a one-hitter and 6-1 lead into the seventh and left after singles by George Brett, Bo Jackson and Willie Wilson scored a run. "The slider was good coming out of the chute," Harnisch said.

"I threw it early to the first hitter, and it gave me confidence the rest of the night. I didn't have a good breaking ball all spring, but tonight I knew where it was going when I threw it" Jay Aldrich relieved Harnsich and got Frank White to ground int a double play that ended the seventh. He went 2 innings for AB Pet 10 34 9 16 .471 13 45 12 18 .400 12 43 4 17 .395 10 39 15 .385 13 53 6 20 .377 11 32 4 12 .375 11 44 6 16 .364 11 39 9 14 .359 12 42 11 15 .357 11 42 6 15 .357 retired the next 14 batters. The first of those outs, a grounder by White, scored Eisenreich. The Orioles loaded the bases in the first inning for the fourth time in five game's on this homestand.

They had scored a total of four runs in the three previous opportunities, before getting four against Davis. The Orioles loaded the bases again in the fourth and eighth, and were 3-for-7 with the bases filled. For the season, Orioles batters are 4-for-20 with the bases loaded, but have drawn five walks and hit three sacrifice flies fora total of 20 runs in 28 plate appearances. IN OTHER GAMES: Frank Tanana got his 199th career victory and ended a five-game losing streak against Minnesota, leading the Detroit Tigers over the host Twins, 6-3. Tanana (1-1) held Minnesota hitless for four innings and retired 15 of the first 18 batters.

He allowed three runs on six hits in 6 innings and won for the first time in seven starts against the Twins since July 28, 1985. Tony Fernandez capped a comeback from an early seven-run deficit with a two-run single in the sixth inning and Fred McGriff and Kelly Gruber later homered as host Toronto beat Cleveland, 1 2-9. The Indians led 9-2 before Toronto scored six times in the fifth. Gruber singled twice and John Olerud homered during the rally. his first save despite allowing Wilson's three-run homer with two outs in the ninth, his first.

"That's why you want to score runs, so you don't put pressure on the pitchers all the time," Orioles manager Frank Robinson said. "He didn't have to be perfect, and could still get the job done for me." Phil Bradley and Steve Finley opened the Orioles' first with singles and walks to Cal Ripken and Mickey Tettleton made it 1-0. Horn followed with his two-run single and Joe Orsulak hit an RBI single. Orsulak, who had four hits and a walk Sunday, later singled and tripled, stretching his hit streak to seven. He ended the string by hitting into a double play in the seventh.

The Orioles added two runs in the fourth. Orsulak led off with a single, Billy Ripken beat out a bunt for a hit and Brady Anderson's bunt loaded the bases when Orsulak slid into third ahead of Davis' throw. Bradley hit a grounder that went through the legs of charging third baseman Kevin Seitzer for an error, and Finley singled off the glove of Brett at first base for another run. Tettleton hit a two-run single in the eighth off Larry Mc Williams. Harnisch, making his third start of the season, gave up a walk to Jim Eisenreich and a double to Wilson in the second inning, then Home Runs Bell, Toronto, Gruber, Toronto, McGriff, Toronto, 10 are tied with 3-Runs Batted In Bell, Toronto, 13; Griffey, Seattle, 13; Felix, Toronto, 12; Gruber, Toronto, 12; Fernandez, Toronto, 11: Incaviglia.

Louis. The left-hander, who resigned with the Cardinals last Dec. 14 as a free agent, has permitted 14 hits and three runs in 21 innings. He is 9-1 lifetime against Pittsburgh. IN OTHER GAMES: Joe Carter drove in a career-high seven runs with a grand slam, double and single as the San Diego Padres routed the San Francisco Giants 13-3 in a game delayed twice by rain.

The Associated Press ST. LOUIS More important to John Tudor than what he accomplished last night was the lift he was able to give his slumping teammates. "We went out and we scored seven runs. We made the plays," Tudor said after the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4.

"The team needed the win." Tudor's strong eight innings in his third start snapped St. Louis' four-game losing streak and left manager Whitey Herzog happy. "Three-and-zero looks pretty good when you're 6-8 (overall)," Herzog said. "He's already snapped three losing streaks, and National League we've only played two weeks." Pedro Guerrero's two-run homer was the big blow for the Cardinals, who have now scored 21 runs in Tudor's three starts. "That put us back on top and gave me a little more to shoot for," said Tudor, who totaled 85 pitches before giving way to Ken Dayley in the ninth.

"Instead of sitting on the bench and maybe feeling sorry for myself, I had to go out there and try to keep us in the ballgame." Two of the three runs Tudor surrendered were in the first inning in ending Pittsburgh's four-game win streak. The Cardinals also CLIVILANO ORIOLES 8. The Reds had just 66 last year. STARTERS Ramon Martinez has pitched three shutouts in 24 career starts. He is beginning his first full year in the majors with Los Angeles, and got his first shutout of the season Sunday against Houston. STOPPERS Twice in American League annals, during real games, real human beings accomplished the feat Bert Campaneris for the Kansas City A's in 1965, Cesar Tovar for the Minnesota Twins in 1968, both late-season peccadillos. Lyons, still circling Earth at that point, got wind of these feats, and the idea was lodged in his fertile brain forevermore.

He would not rest easily until he could do likewise, and what better time than now? Surely, they'd be watching back home, because it's fully cabled. "What else is there to do on a Monday afternoon on Pluto?" Lyons said. "I know they get ESPN up there, and WGN is big, too. Most everybody has satellite dishes. I was supposed to do this a couple years ago, at the tail end of spring training.

In Nashville. On April Fool's Day, naturally. Rained out. Just my luck." an answer until Thursday. By that time, today's game would be over and we'd already be in Texas.

That's assuming, by Thursday, Fisk would remember who asked him the question in the first place." Somehow, despite this backdrop of dissension, Lyons and Fisk tore themselves away from each other's throats to join White Sox teammates for the annual Windy City Classic exhibition against the Cubs on a shiny afternoon. The White Sox won again, also an annual occurrence, but to alleviate any tedium that this trend might perpetuate, Steve "Psycho" Lyons fulfilled a dream he has nurtured since he was a child on yonder planet. He played every position, twice playing two in the same inning, and 37,135 paid the price. If you're scoring, Lyons' magnificent obsession went 2-3-7-8-6-9-5-9-1-4. Press Wire Services CHICAGO Steve Lyons, the utility man from Pluto, was in the visitors' clubhouse at Wrigley Field yesterday morning, talking about that fine art of handling pitchers.

His stream of unconsciousness was overheard by Carlton Fisk, a real catcher. "I hardly slept at all last night, knowing Lyons is coming after my job," Fisk intoned in that regal manner of his. "I'm in real trouble now. You know what they say about the gear we use behind the plate? The tools of ignorance? Somehow, that takes on a special meaning today." Lyons, offended, shot back at the old man. "I was going to ask Fisk for some tips about what to do back there," he said.

"But you know how slow he thinks at his age. If I posed the question right now, I wouldn't get TIGERS 6. "When I'm not pitching, I'm on the bench and I'm ready to pinch run," Perez said. "I'm ready to do anything. I like to do that. That's part of my job. But I don't see that here.

"There are some guys who should be getting ready to pinch hit and pinch run in the sixth, seventh or eighth, and they just sit there. You have to know when you're gonna pinch hit. You have to stretch, you have to get ready. You don't be sitting down on the bench. You have to prepare yourself mentally.

"And there's too many jokes during the game in the dugout. Too many funny things. Sure, this is a game, but you have to have fun playing well on the field, not in the dugout. And you shouldn't be having fun if you've lost five in a row. "Bull on the bench is no good, especially if you're losing.

I watch everything. I see. "You know, now it doesn't seem like a big deal, but late in the season you think about all the games you lost early." Perez is most upset with the Yankees' five-game losing streak as they enter a three-game series with the Mariners tonight at the Stadium. Most players feel it's early, but Perez is concerned the Yanks might get too far behind to take advantage of his history of winning in September 1 3-3 over the last three years. "You want to win early in the year," Perez said.

"Then you can get in a slump later on and not have it kill you. And I want to win this year with the Yankees. "I want to try and do this thing together. We have to play more together. I see people playing out there for themselves and not for the team.

That's not good." 1M Ml Ml -4 101 1M list I. HS SiLents 4 Pittsburgh's Barry Bonds left Sunday's game In the fifth Inning after a home plate collision.
