HIGHLANDS Henry Hudson Regional School Principal Louis Alexander was fired last night by the Board of Education. Board President John E. Schlapkohl refused to say why Alexander's contract was not renewed and warned other Board members not to discuss their action. Alexander said he will appeal the decision at a Boarder hearing. If that fails, he said, he will take his case to the state commissioner of education.

Alexander, who served three years as principal and would have gained tenure if his contract had been renewed, declined to speculate about the reason for his dismissal. If he had had tenure, the Board couldn't have fired him without proving gross negligence or immoral conduct. The dismissal was approved by the Board by a 6-1 margin, with Joseph Hawley, who was elected last month, casting the lone dissenting vote. Carl L. Higgins and Frank Gimpel were absent.

"I think Mr. Alexander has done an outstanding job and I think the community and the students concur with my feelings," Hawley said. Hawley was the 1975 Henry Hudson senior class president and said he had worked closely with Alexander that year. "I'm going to back Mr. Alexander 100 per cent in his fight," Hawley said.

Miss Barbara White, student council president, told the Board, "There's nobody in the school who is more involved with the students than Mr. Alexander. "You people don't come in contact with him, but you make a decision like this," she went on. "You ought to ask the students about it; you'd find that they support him." Hawley noted that a recent Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges evaluation had commended A TIMELESS HUNTINGTON TRIBUTE Bronze Markers furnished for all cemeteries. Schlapkohl said Board members and Superintendent Joseph Isch had observed Alexander's performance over a long period of time before reaching their decision. "It was not a snap decision," Schlapkohl said. He declined to say wheththe Board had considered firing Alexander last year. "We have a policy against commenting on personnel decisions," Schlapkohl said. "It protects the people involved.

We don't want it to become a mudslinging contest." Despite the dismissal, Schlapkohl said the Board will not reconsider a proposal made by Isch in January to abolish the principal's post in favor of three administrative assistants. That plan was scrapped after parents and teachers expressed strong opposition. During the debate on that proposal, one Board member, who did not want to be identified, said Isch had been trying to oust Alexander for more than a year. The Board member said Alexander had been selected in 1974 over another candidate who was favored by Isch. Isch denied that allegation, but last night refused to say whether he supported Alexander's dismissal.

Schlapkohl said the Board would meet "as soon as possible" to consider Alexander's appeal. Alexander came to the district after serving six years as assistant principal at Whippany Park High School in Morris County and 12 years as a teacher at Uniondale High School on Long Island..
