B8 The Pittsburgh Press Thursday, October 27. 1988 LOCALREGIONAL Microbes that eat runoff i OBITUARIES from mines face W.Va. test i 4 4' Raymond Messina Raymond "Raimondo" Messina, 94, a retired barber from Home-wood, died of heart failure Monday at Negley House Nursing Home, Shadyside. Mr. Messina emigrated from Sicily in 1922.

He ran a barbershop at 1005 N. Homewood Ave. for 48 years until his retirement in 1983. He was wounded while serving in the Italian Army during World War I and received the Cross of Merit. In 1984, the Italian government gave him the Gold Cross and appointed him a Cavaliere.

Mr. Messina was a member of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Homewood, for 53 years. He is survived by three sons, Peter J. of Harrisburg, Michael A. of Pittsburgh and John R.

of Elk Grove Village, a daughter, Josephine Collins of Penn Hills; a sister, Pier-ina Fratangelo of Morgantown, W.Va.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at William F. Gross Funeral Home, 11735 Frankstown Road, Penn Hills. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Holy Rosary Church, 7114 Kelly St.

in Columbus, Ohio. She has bred microbes that attack specific metals. One oxidizes iron, others do the same to aluminum, sulfur or manganese. Texas University has selected Ms. Davison to join a $189 million project to build a demonstration treatment pond at a lignite strip mine site there.

But the industry itself has been slow to take the bait. State Energy Department spokesman Roger Hall said Ms. Davison's results have been more impressive in the laboratory than in the field. He cited the use of the microbe system on an acidic mine drainage problem in Garrett County, Md. Ms.

Davison's microbes have remarkably reduced iron levels in the water, but not consistently brought them within regulatory levels. Ms. Davison says that with more time the levels will be in compliance. Lambda has successfully treated acid drainage in Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland, but Peabody's applied technology program is its first major industrial contract. Peabody Coal spends about $50,000 a year treating the mine now, said Jim Crawford, manager of environmental affairs at Peabody's West Virginia headquarters in Charleston.

Neither he nor Ms. Davison would say how much the microbe treatment will cost, but if it works, he said, the savings will be CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) A former high school science teacher is growing microbes that could revolutionize mining by neutralizing the acid drainage that costs companies and the government millions for cleanup. Jo Davison has convinced Pea-body Coal the nation's largest producer, to let her "bugs" eat the poisonous runoff from a West Virginia mine. Acid drainage plagues miners of gold, silver and other natural resources worldwide.

"Anywhere there are pyrites, there is acidic drainage," said West Virginia University researcher Jeff Skousen. Pyrites are metal sulfides that in the presence of air and water produce sulfuric acid. Coal industry officials have pegged the water treatment costs at 1 million a day in the United States. West Virginia has paid more than $1 million in three years to treat abandoned sites in just two counties. Metals from mine drainage poison 20 percent of West Virginia's streams, and 13 percent are too acid from the drainage or too alkaline from overzealous treatment, according to a state report last month.

Enter Ms. Davison, whose work parallels wetlands research at West Virginia University, where she was completing a master's degree in science education in the 1950s. After a dam holding mine runoff broke and flooded a pristine bog in German Valley, West Virginia University researcher Joe Lange discovered that water leaving the bog was crystal clear. tomorrow at R.V. Anderson Funeral Home 806 West Homestead. A mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Magdalene Church, 1008 Amity Homestead.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Dr. Robert S. Ard Dr. Robert S.

Ard, a family physician in the Allegheny Valley area for 50 years, died of a heart attack yesterday in Allegheny Valley Hospital. Dr. Ard, 72, of Rosslyn Avenue, Springdale, was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He served his residency and internship at the old Pittsburgh Hospital. During World War II, he served as a flight surgeon and participated in the invasion of Normandy.

After the war, Dr. Ard set up practice in Cheswick. He was recently honored by the Pennsylvania Medical Society for 50 years of service to the district. Dr. Ard was a member of Pollock Lodge, Tarentum; the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Pittsburgh; and Syria Temple.

He also was a member of the Pittsburgh Athletic Association. He is survived by his wife, Miriam Travis Ard; a daughter, Mimi Travis Dvorn of Philadelphia; and a grandson. Friends will be received from noon to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Ross G. Walker Funeral Home 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington.

A memorial service and burial will follow at Homewood Mausoleum. John F. Kunze John Frederick Kunze, 87, a teacher and lecturer from Ross, died Sunday at Suburban General Hospital of a stroke. He taught physics and math in Pittsburgh public schools for 37 years, including stints at Latimer Junior, Perry, South Hills and Allegheny high schools. Mr.

Kunze also lectured at Buhl Science Center for 40 years and was president of the board of trustees at Allegheny Center Unitarian Church, North Side. He is survived by a son, Jay, of Columbia, and three grandchildren. Visitation and the funeral will be private, but a memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Nov. 12 in Allegheny Center Unitarian Church at North Avenue and Resaca Place, North Side.

Arrangements are being handled by Heard Funeral Home, North Side. Rev. A.D. Bachkovsky The Rev. Andrew David Bachkovsky, pastor of St.

Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Trauger, Westmoreland County, died of pneumonia Monday in Uniontown Hospital. Father Bachkovsky, 71, attended St. Procopius Seminary in Lysle, 111., and SS. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary, North Side. He was ordained on May 29, 1955.

REARICK Denise L. from Jon SMITH Francine from Manuel Group pins porn fight on white-ribbon campaign The 14-year-old son of a Shaler man, who is awaiting trial on charges stemming from an unprovoked attack on patrons in a Butler County bar in June, was found dead in his home, the victim of an apparent suicide. Investigators said family members last night found the body of Mathew McLaughlin of Mount Royal Boulevard, Shaler, on the dining room floor with a single gunshot wound to the head. A handgun was found nearby.

His father, Robert E. McLaughlin, 51, was charged with one count of criminal homicide and three counts each of attempted homicide and aggravated assault for allegedly opening fire on patrons of the Plane View Inn in Penn on June 19. Police said the elder McLaughlin did not know any of his victims, one of whom, Brett Stidham, 22, of Mc-Candless, died June 20 in Allegheny General Hospital. Investigators said Mathew, one of 11 children, had been under considerable peer pressure in school and was involved in a fist fight with another boy yesterday. Floyd Nevling, county police inspector, said the fight occurred during a game of tag and was not related to his father's actions.

Nevling said the boy's suicide note does not contain any references to peer harassment. "In the note, the boy does not blame anyone but himself," Nevling said. Before last night's shooting, Mathew had apparently been doing his homework, investigators said, adding that a Bible and a chemistry book were open on the table. ribbons in February to protest the Adult Book Store in Penn. "The campaign was created because we need to show how many people really cared," said Norma Norris, who started the Butler campaign and is chairwoman of the national effort. District Attorney Bob Colville said such groups help define community standards, which is the key to successfully prosecuting alleged pornographers. The highlight of the campaign will be a 500-car parade past the city's Liberty Avenue pornography district at 1 1 a.m. Nov.
