Australia To Launch Its Cup Bid NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) Australia, one of two America's Cup contenders from the land down under, arrived in Newport Harbor yesterday to begin preparations for the foreign preliminaries. The newer of the two Australian 12-meter boats competing for yachting's most prestigious prize, Australia was towed from New York City and was tied up at Newport Shipyard near France the oldest of the foreign vessels entered in the 1977 races. Gretel the other Australian contender, arrived here yesterday. Sverige, the first Swedish yacht ever to enter the America's Cup competition, was offloaded in Providence from a freighter early yesterday morning and was under tow to Jamestown.

John Rosser, crew member on the Australia, said the boat will probably go out sailing in a week or so after she was reassembled and perhaps given a new coat of paint on her deck. Rosser said seven members of Australia's 11-man crew were already in Newport and that others were expected within the next couple of days. He added that a decision had yet to be made on whether Australia and Gretel 7J. will tune up against each other prior to the foreign preliminaries, scheduled for Aug. 4-9.
