The jurist bcgaii his political career in 1914 when he was appointed counsel to the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders, a position he held for seven years. He also served as borough attorney in Keyport and in Keansburg. In 1914 he ran for the state Henry E.

Ackerson who rose to eminence through the practice of law to become a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court, is a life-long resident of Monmouth County. During all but the first 10 years of his life he has lived in Keyport. The future justice was born in Holmdel Township on Oct. 45, 1880. Ten years later his parents moved to Keyport and there he went to school.

After his graduation from Keyport High School in 1898, the young man worked for a short time as a clerk in the Peoples National Bank, Keyport. He returned to school, however, and studied at the Packard Commercial School of New York. Having graduated Senate and defeated T. Frank Armlebv of Asburv Park. Re elected for a second term, he resigned in 1919 to accept an aDDointment to the former Court of Errors and Appeals In 1924 Justice Ackerson was appointed to the Circuit Court for a seven-year term.

He was reappointed for two more terms until, in 1948. he was selected by Gov. Alfred E. Driscoll to fill a place on the newlv formed New Jersey Supreme Court. He served as a ii ii ii ii an associate iustice of the court until his retirement in 1952 at the age of 71 (his re HENRY E.

ACKERSON JR. from that institution, he found employment with the New York brokerage firm of Post and Flagg. While working there the young man attended evening classes at Sentfner ry. School, studying pre-law. He then entered New York Law School from which he was graduated in 1902.

During the following two years he was associated with, the Jersey City law firm of Crouse and Perkins and at the same time taught at the New York Law School. The future justice was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1904, became a counsellor at law in 1909 and a special master in chancery in 1917. The young lawyer established his own practice at Keyport in 1906. Four years later he married Miss Edith Dart Calef of Middletown, Conn. They had two sons.

Despite his busy legal career, Justice Ackerson found time to serve the Legal Aid Society of Monmouth County, to be president of the Monmouth County Bar Association, to serve on the awards committee of the Freedom Foundation, Valley Forge, and to help organize the Monmouth Council, Boy Scouts of America. Ackerson Hall, the home of Rutgers University School of Law at Newark, is named for the justice. Henry E.

In a test, the computer diagnosed more cases correctly than eight doctors, i The scientists are Vance X. Gledhill and Dr.

John D. Mathews whose work won the Swiss Karger Memorial Foundation annual prize for medical research. Full details of the research at Melbourne's Walter and Eliza Hall Institute have not been disclosed but it could be a step towards the increased use of computers in hsopitals and surgeries. Gledhill and Mathews have shown that a computer can make diagnoses from patients' answers to a questionnaire with the remarkable feature of learning as it goes. In a trial at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, a group of eight doctors and a computer were asked to make diagnoses from questionnaire responses of 45 patients who had one or more of 15 diseases.

The doctors made the correct diagnosis in 42 per cent of the cases: the computer scored 69 per cent. This is not the first application of computer diagnosis. Ond is used at the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow, Scotland, to aid diagnosis in suspected stomach ulcer The machine is programmed to ask the patient a series of questions, each one determined by the preceding answer. In this way, the computer builds up a clinical picture for the doctor. No claim is made in Glasgow for the superiority of the computer which concentrates on one disease unlike the range involved in the Melbourne research.
