thru Sat. 1 0 a.m. -5 p.m.; Fri. till 9 p.m. Women i from Page B5 heard Judge Mansmann, I would be asked if that was my husband.

In a parking garage, I told the attendant someone had parked in the space for Judge Mansmann. He said, 'Who did you say you worked for, "I'm beginning to resent being called Judge Honey," she said, bringing applause from the crowd. "I also get 'You don't look like a judge' and 'Can you fix a parking I say no I can't, and I wouldn't, but I refer them to Michelle Madoff." More applause. She spoke of the working mother. "We have to recognize and ac count for our children and the value of children.

We must nurture children. We have to stress interrelated-ness. It's not isolated. It's not just a woman's job. It is society's.

Women have to be able to combine jobs and take care of children as well. There has been so much talk about the mommy track and its gamut of emotions, but being a mother should not hold a woman back. "After all my years on the bench, I am still asked about my husband's acceptance of my job and how it affects raising my children. But I urge there not be disrespect for the full- "We all know the word work. We need to know the meaning of the word relax.

"I wish for all of you only peaks. A life of balance, interesting work and, of course, greater pay." Thunderous applause. The Commission for Women started in 1987 as a successor to the Mayor's Task Force on Women in Renaissance II. Its aim is to improve the economic status of women and the quality of women's lives in the region. Anyone interested in knowing more about the non-profit organization can call 281-5533.

time mother. We must take the just out of just a housewife and not underestimate our accomplishment in the home." Judge Mansmann, who was introduced by Beth Adams, manager of public relations for Heinz USA, as living proof that a woman can wear three hats, urged women to reach down and extend a hand to a sister, speak positively of each other, support each other. And to pursue grace and "avoid heart attacks, failed marriages and loss of contact with your children" as jobs take more time. I Doctor from Page BS requiring maximum labor for minimum return. The weeds are clearly the proletariat, and I should applaud their ability to thrive in an unfair environment.

I feel as though I should purge the flowers, and make a political example of my garden. On the other hand, the begonias are just fabulous this year. Signed, Prof. A. Dumont, Department of Radical Agronomy.

DEAR PROFESSOR: Lenin had a lot to say about gardens. It was Lenin who said "Comrades! En route to consolidating the gains of the revolutionary struggle to achieve the dictatorship of the proletariat, stop! Find roses! Smell them!" So don't worry. Flowers are not inconsistent with communism. Just take care that your weeds do not spill into your neighbor's garden. It is difficult to explain that the goldenrod choked his snapdragons because it was their internationalist duty.

DEAR DR. DIRT: I got these weird weeds that grow through asphalt. I can't get my grass to grow on soil, and here's something that grows on asphalt. Of course it's ugly. The hardier the plant, the uglier it is.

Maybe there's a lesson there. I wouldn't worry about the ugly weeds if my flowers could at least stay alive. But all my flowers formed a suicide pact. No one has yet done any research on this, but I know the truth: I know that plants can commit suicide. Most flowers, in fact, die by suicide.

Pull them up after they've equivalent of the guy who comes over unannounced, puts his feet up on the table and yells for a beer. These are the plants that grow right next to the flowers in your garden like they're trying to pick them up baby, sprout here They haven't just taken over the garden; they own the lawn. My lawn is all weeds. I console myself with the article I read in magazines many years before, about how plants feel pain. I tend to feel that a proper domesticated lawn suffers a mowing like a good dog suffers a haircut or bath.

Weeds are craven and cowardly, and fear mowing. So I mow with a sneer. I set the blade real low. When I am done mowing, I yank them up by hand. Real slowly.

Then I put them in plastic bags so they will not decompose but be entombed in landfill for a millennium or more. But that's over now. I sold my house. I live in an apartment. I might be happy someday.

Signed, Hates Weeds. DEAR HATES: I've examined the sample of weeds you sent, and they are Appalachian Oil-finders (clampettus jed). They usually grow over large reserves of unrefined petrochemicals. Pity you moved. With all that oil wealth, you could do what most people want to do: have someone come in every week, tear up the lawn and gardens, and put new ones down.

That is, after all, the only way you can keep your landscape perfect. (St. Paul Pioneer Press-Dispatchdistributed byKnight-News-Tribune.) died and you'll see they've tied granny knots in their roots. Do they leave notes, saying, "Now that I've bloomed, there's nothing more to live No. They make us feel guilty.

I had a window box of red something-or-oth-ers-Nasteraniums, or Bachelor's Spats, or Geroni-golds I don't know, the wife picks them out. Anyway, I watered them daily, just like it said on the little plastic spear. They died. They looked like I went out there with a blow torch and gave them a good shot of fire every morning. We bought some impatiens I remember the name of those, because it sounded like a flower that would always drum its leaves nervously, thinking, "All right, all right, Where's the water, where's the sun, I don't have all day." I watered them.

They died. I bought some tropical-looking numbers. The plastic spear had a picture of a dark sun, which I took to mean shade, so I planted them in the shade. They died. Only when I looked at the spear did I realize the little dark sun means they only thrive during a solar eclipse.

The people who run the country know this. They don't tell us. So everything died. The little plastic spears were just tombstones. I would look out the window and expect to see little clumps of flowers from the garden next door, laying wreathes under the plastic spears.

So now everything is weeds. Hardy weeds. These are the boors of the plant world, the plant FROM WAVERLY, P. KAUFMANN AND J. WOLF TO NAME OVER 1200 BOLTS IN STOCK ALL FIRST QUALITY 30 to 70 OFF RETAIL CUSTOM BEDSPREADS CUSTOM FURNITURE Boone DECORATIVE FABRICS 4778 McKNIGHT RD.
