Asbury Park PressTuesday, March 6, 1990 C7 Obituaries QC, c7. 3-C Deaths Gary Merrill, actor, was married to Bette Davis Merrill went on to appear in more than 20 movies, including "Phone Call from a Stranger," 1953; "Blueprint for Murder," 1953; "Bermuda Affair," 1956, and "Around the World Under the Sea," 1966. GARY MERRILL, known for his supporting roles in the movies "Twelve O'Clock High" and "All About Eve" and for his stormy marriage to actress Bette Davis, died yesterday of cancer in FALMOUTH, MAINE. He was 74. On television, he played the gruff but understanding Dr.

Gillespie in the "Young Dr. Kildare" series and to narrate "The Valiant Years" series about Winston Churchill. His marriage to Miss Davis ended in divorce in 1960. It wasn't until 1985 that she ended a 15-year silence by writing him. Miss Davis sent a note to Merrill after he had planted himself outside a bookstore to urge people not to buy a Merrill moved to Maine in the mid-1970s and spent most of his time playing golf and reading poetry in schools.

He died at his home, a small cottage overlooking the ocean in the wealthy Portland suburb of Falmouth Foreside. The colorful, spirited actor, whose penchant for wearing skirts on hot days was known in the Portland area, had a career that spanned more than 40 years. Merrill began his acting career on stage in 1937. His first movie photo MERRILL I960 critical biography of her written by her daughter. Merrill said he didn't want the actress to be ridiculed by a daughter he called "greedy." The Associated Press role was in "Winged Victory" in 1 944.

He went on to "Twelve O'Clock High" in 1949 and "All About Eve," which starred Miss Davis and won the best-picture Academy Award, in 1950. JACK J. HANLEY, 70, of Palm Bay, formerly of TINTON FALLS, died Feb. 25 at Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla. Mr.

Hanley worked at Naval Weapons Station Earle, Colts Neck Township, for 15 years before retiring in 1982. Before that, he served in the Army for 27 years, retiring in 1965 as lieutenant colonel. Mr. Hanley was a member of the Retired Officers Association. Mr.

Hanley was born in Toledo, Ohio, and lived in several places while in the service and in Tinton Falls for 19 years 1 before moving to Florida in 1 983. Surviving are his wife, the former Virginia Silvia; a son. Jack J. Neptune; a daughter, Shirley Ann Gold, Allison Park, a brother, Edward, Palm Harbor, a sister, i Mary Wambold, Sylvania, Ohio, and five grandchildren. WILLIAM HORVATH, 40, of MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, died yesterday at home. He was an engineer and plant manager at Rhodes Plastics, Linden, for eight years, and was a member of the Association of Plastics Engineers; Bethel Bible Chapel, Red Bank, and their Action in Church I group. Mr. Horvath was born in Pas- saic and lived most his life in Middle- town. He was also a resident of Lincoln Park.

John F. Pfleger 1 Funeral Home, Middletown, is in charge of arrangements. FRANCES VOLA LEMING, 79, of i NEPTUNE CITY, who died Sunday, is also a member of the Ladies Progressive Club, Neptune City. The location of the club was incorrect in the obituary yesterday in The Asbury Park Press.

RACHEL C. MATTHEWS, 87. of Palm Beach Shores, formerly of MANALAPAN TOWNSHIP, died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital, West Palm Beach, Fla. Mrs. Matthews was born in Manalapan and had lived in Monmouth County before moving to Florida in 1980.

Surviving are a son, Richard Clark Ocean Township; three daughters, Lindsay Guerry and Rachel Seibert, both Palm Beach Shores, and Alletta McKenzie, North Palm Beach, 18 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchil- -dren. Vin- cent's Academy, Newark, from 1965 to I 1975. Prior to that, she taught at St. Cecilia's School, Kearny. She was a member of the Spring Lake Women's Club, where she was publicity manager; the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, Spring Lake; the American Association of Retired Persons; Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel; a I volunteer for Deborah; a communicant Gary Merrill with Bette Davis In a 1 Gloria Carter GLORIA CARTER SPANN, 63, the last surviving sibling of former President Carter, died yesterday at Sumter Regional Hospital, PLAINS, of pancreatic cancer. Mrs.

Spann died of the same cancer that killed her father, James Earl Carter, her sister, Ruth Carter Stapleton, and her other brother, Billy Carter. Her mother, Lillian Carter, died of cancer in 1983. Mrs. Spann, an avid motorcyclist, will be buried today at a graveside service at Lebanon Cemetery in Plains following a funeral procession led by fellow motorcyclists. All but Mrs.

Stapleton are buried in the cemetery. Billy Carter's widow, Sybil, said the family is bewildered by the disease and hopes that scientists can learn more about it. Texter, Mary Lena, Toms River Tucker, Shirley Manchester Township MARTIN F. CUFF 75, of Juneau Beach, formerly of MAN-TOLOKING, died Sunday at the Medical Center of Miami. He was president for Youngmann Cuff petroleum equipment distributors in Edison Township, for 20 years before retiring eight years ago. He attended Newark College of Engineering, now New Jersey Institute of Technology; an Army captain during World War II and the Korean War; a member of the Manas-quan River Golf Club, Bridle, where he was chairman of the Osprey Jamboree Golf Tournament, and J.D.M. Country Club, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Mr. Cuff was born and raised in Elizabeth and lived in Summit for nine years and Mantoloking for 12 years before moving to Florida seven years ago. His first wife, the former Genevieve Donahue, died in 1979. Surviving are his wife, the former Marilynn O'Brien; a daughter, Mary Catherine, Brielle; a stepson, Thomas O'Brien, Miami; two stepdaughters, Barbara Winch, Raleigh, N.C., and Marilynn Leitner, Ocean Township; a brother, William, Chadds Ford, two sisters, Janice, Avon, and Elise McKenna, Boonton, and 1 1 grandchildren. HOWARD CM. FARRER, si. of Stevensville, formerly of Forked River, LACEY TOWNSHIP, died Friday at home. Mr. Farrer, known as "Bud," was a self-employed photographer in the Philadelphia area for many years.

He was a coach for Germantown Friends School and Abington Friends School, both Pennsylvania; a former member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Waretown, where he was a member of the Vestry and the Brotherhood of St. Andrew; a member of Christ Church Parish, Stevensville; past commander and instructor of the Barnegat Bay Power Squadron, holding the rank of grand mariner, and a member and instructor of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. As residents of her small farming community mourned Mrs. Spann's death, a group of about 10 fellow bikers, some in jeans and leather jackets, consoled her husband at the family farm. Spann, wearing a leather vest, dark glasses and with long, flowing gray hair, said his wife had requested the motorcycle procession. He and the other bikers gathered in the yard declined to be interviewed. A red Harley-Davidson motorcycle was parked nearby.

Some of the bikers had beards, while some wore jackets and shirts with Harley-Davidson logos. A burly biker wearing a military-style beret stood a few Scheie, 80, was dedicated to the advancement of ophthalmic science and patient care for more than 55 years, and his research findings had a profound effect on eye care throughout the world. He was responsible for the development of key surgical techniques, including the treatment of congenital cataracts and glau CAROLINE E. LARRABEE GROVER, 69, of Boynton Beach, formerly of TOMS RIVER, died Saturday at home. She was a former member of the Ocean County Board of Elections; former secretary of the Regular Republican Club of Lakewood; a former Ocean County Republican com-mitteewoman, and a former member of the Toms River Yacht Club.

Mrs. Grover was born in Lakewood and lived there and Toms River before moving to Boynton Beach in 1979. Her first husband, Albert S. Larrabee, died in 1972, and her second husband, C. Stanley, died in 1975.

Anderson Campbell Funeral Home, Toms River, is in charge of arrangements. HAZEL HOPKINS, 86. of toms RIVER, died yesterday at Bayview Convalescent Center, Bayville, Berkeley Township. Mrs. Hopkins was born and lived in New Egypt, Plumsted Township, before moving to Toms River 20 years ago.

Her husband, Norman, died in 1962. Surviving are three daughters, Betty Odenheimer, Toms River; Edna Hand, New Egypt, and Mary Gorby, Will-ingboro; a son, Norman Scranton, 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. LEES, 9i, of Southold, N.Y., whose daughter lives in Whiting, MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, died Saturday at Community Medical Center, Toms River, while visiting her daughter in Whiting.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Southold, and was past chief daughter of Daughters of Scotia, Lady Hamilton Grand Lodge, New York. Mrs. Lees was born in Scotland and lived in Pleasantville, N.Y., and Queens before moving to Southold several years ago. Her husband, Robert, died in 1976. Surviving are three daughters, Margaret Bame, Whiting; Mary Hamilton, Southold, and Freda Roush, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Martinez was a superintendent for Rickoon Real Estate, the Bronx, for 10 years before retiring in 1974. He was born in Corzel, Puerto Rico and lived in New York before coming to Toms River 17 years ago.

Surviving are his wife, the former Maria Gonzalez; a daughter, Carmen Rios, Toms River, and three grandchildren. Carmona-Bolen Home for Funerals, Toms River, is in charge of arrangements. MARGARET KACHADOORIAN PINAJIAN, 78 of Holiday City, BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, died Sunday at Carter's sister feet from a reporter with his arms crossed over his chest, as if to protect Spann from unwelcome guests. Mrs. Spann belonged to the Georgia Motorcycle Rights organization and was named Most Outstanding Female Motorcyclist in the nation in 1978.

Just after her cancer was diagnosed, she said through a spokeswoman that she and her husband planned to ride their motorcycles to Florida for the weekend. She and her husband traveled widely by motorcycle and at one time she received an award for having biked 100,000 miles. Mrs. Spann was co-author of the book "Letters from Home" in the early 1970s, based on letters written by her mother while she served with the Peace Corps in India. The Associated Press coma.

In addition, he helped develop the diagnostic test for myasthenia gravis with Dr. George Gammon in the late 1930s. Many of today's eye instruments and procedures bear his name, including the Scheie test for the tonic pupil and the Scheie procedure used in glaucoma filtration surgery. Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Toms River, is in charge of arrangements. DOROTHY CROLL SLATTERY, 79, of TOMS RIVER, died Saturday at Community Medical Center, Toms River. She was a bookkeeper for Diamond Shamrock, Newark, until retiring. Mrs. Slattery was born in Newark and lived in Harrison most of her life before moving to Toms River in 1975.

She was a secretary for Johns-Manville New York. She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society, and also a member of the Residents Club of Crestwood Village I. Mrs. Tucker was born in Brooklyn and lived in New Rochelle, N.Y., and Owosso, before moving to Manchester in 1978.

Surviving are her husband, William three sons, William, Flushing, Robert, Rochester, N.Y., and Brian, Burnsville, a daughter, Shirley Ann King, Rochester, and eight grandchildren. COHEN, 76, of SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS, died Sunday at Brick Hospital, Brick Township. He was a registered representative for 48 years with Advest, Deal, before retiring six years ago. CURTIS. 64, a lifelong resident of WALL TOWNSHIP, died yesterday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Mr. Curtis, known as "Windy," was an auto body worker for Joe's Garage, Wall, for 26 years before retiring on disability in 1980. He was a member of West Belmar Fire Company 1 Wall; an exempt member of the New jersey State Firemen's Association; former member of the Wall Fire Police for Company 1, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Frank, known as "Artie," was a bus driver for Monmouth County SCAT for the last four years. Prior to that, he was a short-order cook for both the Shore Point Restaurant, Keyport, and the Gallery Restaurant, Woodbridge Township, for 18 years. He was a member of St. Catherine's Senior Citizens Golden Age, North Middletown, Middletown Township, and a member of Bayshore Senior Citizens, Keansburg.

He was born in Brooklyn and moved to the Bayshore area in 1965. Surviving are his wife, the former Laura Oakes; two sons, Norman, Keansburg, and Arthur, serving with the Navy in Norfolk, six daughters, Geraldine Blydenburgh and Jacqueline Downs, both Hampton Bay, N.Y.; Laura Ellis, Spring Lake Heights; Thomasine Fern, Keyport; Kim Davonski, Westhampton Beach, N.Y., and Robin Van Wagenen, Middletown Township; a sister, Evelyn Pelish, Patchogue, N.Y.; 20 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Steinert worked for Norwood Distributors, Long Branch, for 28 years before retiring in 1977. He was a veteran of the Coast Guard and served in the merchant marine during World War II. Born in Union City, he lived in Monmouth County for many years.

Surviving are his wife, the former Grace E. Thome; three sons, the Rev. Edward Martinsville, George Lawton, and Philip Brick Township; two daughters, Esther M. Mr. Taylor was born in Butler and had lived in Okinawa before moving to Orlando in 1965. Surviving are his wife, Harriet; a son, Bruce Orlando; three daughters, Sonja Schwentner, Lakeridge, Annette M. Cutlip, Orlando, and Deborah A. Rogers, Colts Neck; a sister, Ruth C.
