The guides urge women of childbearing age and children to avoid fish that are highest in mercury and PCBs. They provide detail to complement recently announced guidelines from the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. PSR and ARHP say they plan to distribute thousands of the guides to health-care providers and their patients, and both guides are available at www.mercuryaction.orgfish. A free 12-page "On The Go" recipe booklet offers eight recipes for using walnuts, almonds, pecans and hazelnuts, illustrated with color photos. The recipes have been developed by cookbook writer Tina Salter for Diamond of California, the nut company.

The booklet may be requested by mail from: Diamond of California, P.O. Box 1727, Stockton, CA 95201-1727, or by e-mail at diamondnuts.com. Tomatoes belong on the counter top, kept in a ventilated container, perhaps a colander in which they can also be washed. Other tomato tidbits: Tomatoes are low in fat and sodium, contain fiber and are high in potassium and vitamins A and C.

Ounce for ounce, cherry tomatoes have twice the vitamin of larger tomatoes. The riper a tomato is, the more nutritious. Fresh red tomatoes contain almost four time the vitamin A of fresh green tomatoes. Uncooked tomatoes have more vitamin than cooked tomatoes. It would take roughly 300 cherry tomatoes to equal the calories of one chocolate icecream cone.

If you happen to be an unsuspecting kid or adult in the wrong place at the right time, you might just get caught on the hidden cameras of "SKUNKED TV," Discovery Kids' new animal prank reality series. "SKUNKED TV" will debut on Discovery Kids Saturday, airing at 10:30 a.m. on Channel 10 and 11 a.m.

on Channel 4. The series will also air on the Discovery Kids Channel. Show hosts Madai Zaldi-var and Chuck Cureau pose as zookeepers, tourists or whatever it takes to spring hilarious Discovery Kids-style hoaxes involving animals on unsuspecting kids and adults. So what would you do if your local zoo picked you to adopt a pet BUT it was a rhinoceros AND it had to live at your home AND you had to scoop all the poop? Or what if you got caught holding a fishing pole in one of the fish tanks at the local aquarium? The hidden camera reactions are priceless, so you'd better beware. In Discovery Kids style, each episode also includes facts about the featured animals.

Staff Report', By FRANK SUTHERLAND GANNETT NEWS SERVICE Wine connoisseurs declared the 2002 vintage of chardonnays from the West Coast to be the best in decades. That means if you can't afford expensive wines, you can benefit from the trickle-down theory. With great vintages, the best grapes are used for the most expensive wines. But with great vintages, the grapes left over for medium- and lower-priced wines will be extraordinary. One way to look at it: Medium- and even lower-priced wines might have better grapes in a great year than expensive wines will have in a mediocre year.

What makes a great vintage? The climate had to have been right for the season, the grapes had to have been picked at the right time, and the wine maker had to have known how to take advantage of those conditions. For instance, France's 2000 vintage wines at popular prices (under $25) often were better than wines from the previous vintage costing twice as much. For those looking for a good bottle of chardonnay for less than $10, 2002 is your year. Not every wine maker knew how to take advantage of this great vintage, but many did. I asked the tasters to compare five wines under $10 from the 2002 vintage.

This is what we found: 2002 Forest Glen Chardonnay at $9.99. The aroma was full of wood and ripe fruit, particularly pear, fig and melon. In the mouth, the wood was more pronounced, with melon following behind the wood. The Forest Glen had good body. On the finish, we tasted a bit of caramel.

The Forest Glen finished first in our tasting. 2002 Smoking Loon Chardonnay at $9.99. This aroma was minerally and flabby, the latter meaning it was lacking acids and therefore smelled too creamy. There also was a hint of cardboard. In the mouth, we tasted pears and peaches, with hints of vanilla.

2002 Rex Goliath Giant 47-Pound Rooster Chardonnay at $7.99. The rooster in the name and on the label make for good conversation, but inside this bottle is a very good wine for the price. It had a pleasant, Coral aroma, with notes of apples. The apples continued on the palate in what was a very dry wine. It had a short finish compared to the others.

The Rex Goliath finished second in our tasting. 2002 Andretti Selections Chardonnay at $9.99. This wine had a Burgundy aroma, that is, minerally as opposed to fruity. In the mouth, we tasted apples and vanilla, balanced by nice acids. My tasters thought this was a juicy, drinkable wine.

2002 Carmenet Chardonnay at $9.99. This wine had a steely aroma that was slightly offensive at first but quickly blew off. The steeliness did not carry over into the taste. Instead, there was plenty of wood and citrus fruit. The flavors also reminded us tangerine rind and pears.

This wine has finished well in national tastings. It was third in ours. Sutherland's wine-tasting group consists of representatives from five wine distributors in Nashville, a wine collector and restaurant critic Thayer Wine. Prices and availability vary by region. Mangoes are now available in markets most of the year.

The main season for tree-ripened mangoes runs from February to mid-September, peaking from April to July. Mango varieties differ in shape and flavor, and skin color ranges from green to gold and red. The flesh also ranges in color from mellow yellows to deep orange. To pick a great mango: A ripe mango should be fragrant and fruity. In many varieties, the color usually deepens toward warm gold or red as the fruit ripens.

Mangoes often grow softer as they ripen, too, so squeeze gently to judge that. Ripen mangoes at room temperature, perhaps on a kitchen counter. To speed up the process, place the mango in a closed paper bag. Once ripe, mangoes can be refrigerated.
