Frustrated Jackets lose, 34-13 By Chris Bates For The Pittsburgh Press WAYNESBURG If a team can control time of possession, it usually goes home a winner. Mercyhurst proved that theory yesterday, win ning its season opener, 34-13, against Waynesburg. It was the ninth consecutive season-opening victory for the Laicers. Mercyhurst wasted little time get ting on the scoreboard as Jeff An- drejehak ran 47 yards for touchdown on the Lakers' second possession. After that Mercyhurst usea time-consuming drives to score.

Waynesburg held a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter after the first of two 1-yard touchdown runs by Tim Mil ler. The score was set up by Tim Brennan, who recovered a fumble in Laker territory. The rest of the half belonged to Mercyhurst. During one stretch, the Lakers ran off 36 offensive plays to Waynesburg's nine. In the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets ran just six offensive plays.

That was the game plan, Mercy hurst Coach Ken Brasinger said. "We knew we had to emphasize Dan control against Waynesburg. We had to keep the ball out of the hands of (quarterback Jim) Eley and Mil ler. We were very conservative on offense today, but that was by design. Running the option, the Lakers racked up 262 yards on the ground.

Andrejchak led the way with 140 yards on 25 attempts. Senior quarterback Dave Gordon ran for 48 yards and passed for 149 (eight of 12, one touchdown, one interception). Included in that yardage was a 50-yard touchdown pass to Tom Hemer. "I was very pleased with the way we played up front," Brasinger said. "We have some young kids who were under fire for the first time at the collegiate level.

You always have some questions going in, but overall we were pleased with what we saw." For Waynesburg Coach Ty Clarke, it was a frustrating day. His team managed 200 total yards just 14 passing. But it was the defense that caused Clarke the most concern. The Yellow Jackets lost to Denison, 17-0, last week and had hoped to be improved. "The name of the game is poise and we were the most unorganized team I have seen in a long time.

We didn't get set defensively, we didn't make our checks quick enough, and you saw what happened. "At times, I thought our defensive line played pretty well and at other times, it didn't play so well. The most disappointing thing to me is the fact that we didn't get out of the huddle in time on several plays. It all goes back to the poise factor and those things shouldn't be happening in the second game of the season." Clarke blamed part of the problem on multiple lineups. With only three seniors and six juniors on the team, Waynesburg is experimenting at several positions.

"We're still running a lot of people in and out on defense and sorting things out. We played at least eight defensive linemen and seven linebackers today. "We can't develop continuity until we line up with the same people week after week. We hope 11 players will rise to the top soon so we can have a set lineup."
