Castle took delight in the use of gimmicks to intensify the fright of the audience and increase box office receipts. In his debut horror film, "Macabre," came the announcement: "In case of death by fright, life insurance policies from Lloyd's of London will be on sale in the lobby." For "The Tingler," he had some of the seats wired to produce mild electric shocks at the right moments and for "House on Haunted Hill," he had a skeleton dart out at the audience from behind the screen. He used special glasses in "13 Ghosts" to give his audience a three-dimensional scare. Castle was working on his 107th film. "2000 Lakeview Drive," when he died.

Your Etr Touch Florittt" the wonderful Of Rape, Other Charges STEPHEN BOYD Stephen Boyd, 49, Was Film Actor LOS ANGELES (AP) -Actor Stephen Boyd, best known for his performance as Messala in "Ben-Hur," collapsed and died of heart failure while playing golf yesterday, a spokesman for the actor said. He was 49. Boyd, who was born in Ireland, played in dozens of films as a Hollywood contract actor, but he never quite reached star status. After a role in "The Oscar" in 1966, he decided to cast his lot with independent producers and began a new career in foreign-produced films.

Boyd starred with such glamour queens as Elizabeth Taylor, Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren, but he never developed the clearcut trademark necessary to elevate him to superstar. For awhile, Boyd was something of a costume epic specialist, appearing in such films as "Genghis Khan," "The Fall of the Roman Empire" and "The Bible."
