Sunday. November 6, 1988 The Pittsburgh Press Dil COLLEGE FOOTBALL Allegheny stymies Wesleyan, 10-3, keeps North Coast title DISTRICT MEADV1LLE Allegheny College became the first team to win the North Coast Athletic Conference championship two years in a row yesterday, slogging to a 10-3 victory against Ohio Wesleyan. It was Allegheny's 13th consecutive conference victory and made its 1988 record 7-2, 6-0. Ohio Wesleyan, which could have tied for the title with a victory, is 5-4, 3-2. Allegheny quarterback John Lo-gue completed only four of 10 passes for 26 yards for in the rain-soaked game, but one of his completions was a 10-yarder to Derek Paxton for the Gators' touchdown in the first quarter.

The play was set up by a fumble recovery at the Ohio Wesleyan 17. Ohio Wesleyan, which did not complete any of its four passes, cut Allegheny's lead to 7-3 with a 24-yard field goal by Brent Stiffle in the fourth period. But Allegheny's Sean Ward kicked a 23-yard field goal with 3:38 left in the game. Julio Lacayo led Allegheny with 90 yards rushing on 15 carries. Westminster 21 Buffalo State 7 BUFFALO, N.Y.

The rain followed the wind in the second half and that's when Westminster's offense picked up to give the unbeaten Titans their ninth victory. Brad Tokar scored on a 5-yard pass from Joe Micchia and a 5-yard run, and Micchia scored on a 5-yard keeper after Westminster trailed at the half, 7-0. Jeff Shearer had scored for Buffalo State (1-6) on a 5-yard run. Tokar carried 30 times for 112 yards and Micchia completed nine of 17 passes for 85 yards. The defense had a hand in all three Westminster touchdowns.

The Titans marched 85 yards for their first TD after Dan Shorts recovered a Buffalo fumble in the third quarter. Their second TD came five plays after Dave Blazer recovered a fumble at the Buffalo 30 and their third came three plays after Shorts blocked a punt at the Buffalo 17. Westminster, ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division II, can complete an unbeaten season with a victory at home against Ashland next Saturday. IUP 32 Bloomsburg 7 BLOOMSBURG No.

16 ranked IUP (7-2) kept its NCAA Division II playoff hopes alive with its victory against Bloomsburg (7-3) in the Pennsylvania Conference inter-divisional game. After trailing at the half, 7-6, IUP took control in the second half. It went ahead for good, 12-7, in the third quarter on an 8-yard pass from Jim Pehanick to Jerry Lang-ton. Pehanick threw two other touchdown passes a 3-yarder to Paul Kovell in the second period and a 25-yarder to Kovell in the third period. Pehanick completed 18 of 27 passes for 249 yards, an amazing performance under the wet conditions.

Bloomsburg quarterback Paul Venesky completed only six of 26 passes for 50 yards and had terra gained 158 yards on 37 carries, the 19th 100-yard game of his college career. He needs 137 yards in the Rockets' finale against Buffalo Saturday to beat Ricky Porter's school career record of 3,124. Paterra has gained 1,135 yards this season. John Toomer caught six passes for 122 yards for Edinboro, but the Scots threw three interceptions and lost three fumbles. Grove City 3 John Carroll 2 GROVE CITY With 1:03 left, Duke Jouncour of Woodland Hills ran out of the end zone for an intentional safety, preserving an upset victory for Grove City (4-4-1, 2-3-1) against John Carroll (7-2, 4-2) in the Presidents Conference.

Doug Hart missed field-goal attempts of 33 and 32 yards, but he made a 39-yarder in the second quarter. Grove City's defense and the sloppy field conditions combined to hold John Carroll star Steve Pre-lock to 25 yards on 24 carries. John Kunst led Grove City with 44 yards on 15 carries. Clarion 13 California 3 CLARION Sean Morrissey gained 115 yards on 17 carries, including a 66-yard touchdown run, and Keith Powell gained 110 yards on 14 carries as Clarion (3-7, 2-4) concluded its first losing season since 1962 with a Pennsylvania Conference victory. Francis 0 LORETTO Senior tailback Sean McDonough rushed for 154 yards on 28 carries to lead Duquesne (2-7) to a season-ending victory against St. Francis (1-8). Edlnboro 14 Slippery Rock 14 EDINBORO Slippery Rock denied Edinboro a share of the Pennsylvania Conference Western Division championship when quarterback Pat Strine, unable to find a receiver, ran for a tying two-point conversion with 14 minutes left in the game. A victory would have tied Edinboro (5-4-1, 4-1-1) with IUP and Shippensburg for the division title. Shippensburg beat Lock Haven, 24-10, and finished in a tie with IUP, but is champion because it defeated IUP.

Slippery Rock is 4-3-2, 2-2-2. Edinboro took a 14-0 lead on a 1-yard run by Matt Koehle and a 6-yard pass from Hal Galupi to Elbert Cole. Both teams later failed on field goals of less than 35 yards. I 7. 7 OR Includes: Ol CMU took over and drove to the Presidents' 20, where Jim Kelly missed a 37-yard field-goal attempt. Washington Jefferson led, 7-0, at halftime and Luckhardt did not expect much more scoring. "I thought it was a 10-7 kind of ballgame and the winner would be the team that didn't fumble the snap." With 2:59 remaining in the third quarter and the Presidents in a fourth-and-6 situation from the Tartans' 31, CMU's Mark Mittelhauser broke up Aigner's pass to Rob Dom-browski. Chris Hansen bulled his way in the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown with 12:52 remaining in the fourth.

But whatever hope CMU had of taking the lead were dashed when Paterno's two-point conversion pass was intercepted by Chris Bosser. The Presidents needed only four plays to secure the victory. Aigner down of the season, a PAC record, and 20th of the year, a school record. Ivory's point-after gave Washington Jefferson a 14-6 lead with 10:50 remaining. "Ostensibly, it was over," Luckhardt said.

"Our defense went back in and settled down and played well." CMU fumbled away its next opportunity before Paterno drove the Tartans from their 20 to 31 before fumbling again with 59 seconds remaining. "It hurts less when you play with the heart and desire these kids had today," CMU Coach Rich Lackner said. ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III South Region, closes out its regular season Saturday at Ithaca (8-1). Washington Jefferson Coach John Luck-hardt was ready to call for an exorcist after losing fullback Bob Cervone to a broken arm, defensive back Arnold Tarpley to medical school, nose guard Jim Sevcik to financial reasons, fullback Rick France to personal problems and 11 other players to injuries. "I was trying like the dickens to remember if I made someone mad at me in New Orleans with voodoo. I wasn't sure if I had offended someone." Luckhardt might be offending the other coaches in the Presidents Athletic Conference. Yesterday's 14-6 victory against Carnegie Mellon at muddy College Field meant a third consecutive championship and fourth in five years for Washington Jefferson (7-0-1). The Presidents have lost only one conference game in five years, 24-17, to Carnegie Mellon in 1985.

"I'm awfully proud of this group of kids," said Luckhardt, in his sixth year with the Presidents. "We're 31-1 over the last five years and that's a tribute to the kids." It was the first PAC championship for freshman Larry Pitts but he had as much to do with it as anybody. He ran, and sometimes slid, for a game-high 99 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. John Ivory's kick gave the Presidents a 7-0 lead with 4:31 remaining in the first. Quarterbacks Steve Paterno of CMU and Pat Aigner of were ineffective because their receivers were slipping in the mud or having the ball slide off their jerseys.

Aigner threw an interception in the second quarter, stopping a drive at Carnegie Mellon's 7. "I thought that one might come back and haunt me because we were in scoring position," said Aigner, who was intercepted twice. However, the Tartans could not capitalize and lost the ball on downs. next possession ended in a missed 36-yard field goal by Ivory. It was the first of four misses by Ivory.
