(AP photo) Disney on Times By FRANK ELTMAN Associated Press Writer NEW YORK Times Square's metamorphosis from a crime-infested nest or sleaze to a family-oriented vacation spot took a giant leap forward with Disney's million renovation of the historic New Amsterdam Theatre. "What we are celebrating today has got to be the most startling turnaround of any urban area in America in this century," said Gov. George Pataki.

Disney chairman Michael Eisner said that reopening the theater on 42nd Street next to a recently opened Disney store is the "culmination of a dream of so many people. It is an expression of how great the city of New York is." Pataki noted that only a few years ago, 42nd Street between Broadway and Eighth Avenue was a block "I wouldn't walk down in the middle of the day because of fear of the drug dealers, vagrants, the crime and the, fact there was nothing positive about what really is a major symbol of York City." Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said the turning point in the revival of Times Square was Disney's 1995 decision to sign a lease at the theater. "Their investment and confidence this area is the reason why people opens Square are now coming here from all around the world," Giuliani said. The New Amsterdam, built in 1903 and home to the ZiegfeJd Follies from 1913 to 1927, opens later this spring with a series of high-profile events. The premiere of Alan Menken and Tim Rice's concert, "King David," opens the theater from May 15-23.

Disney previously announced that a stage version of "The Lion King" will debut in November. Although the theater is specifically designed for stage productions, Disney, is launching its latest animated feature film, cules," with an exclusive run at the New Amsterdam from June 14-26. The "Hercules World Premiere Weekend in New York" will include a parade following the June 14 premiere. The theater was purchased in 1984 by the New York Empire State Development Corporation and the New York City Economic Development Corporation. As part of its 49-year lease, Disney received a low-interest loan of $28 million from the state and city to help finance the renovations, said Catharine Cary, senior development manager for Walt Disney Ima- gineering.

The company added $8 1 million of its own equity to complete' the project, she said. VIDEOVIEWS 'The Spitfire Grill' is spit and polished drama for video By MAX MCQUEEN Cox News Service The Spitfire Grill. PG-13, 1996. Columbia TriStar. Priced to rent.

Oscar voters 1 really missed the boat this year. Two of the finest fiims of 1996 were "Cold Comfort Farm" and The Spitfire Grill." The former's gentle spoofing of Jane Austen makes you laugh until you The letter's tender drama makes you cry; too, but because of its gentle tugs on the heart and tear ducts. Alison Elliott gives Oscar-worthy work as a released prisoner who starts from scratch at the Spitfire Grill, the only cafe in a Maine hamlet. Skeptics abound, including the Grill's owner, but the poor girl slowly wins over the hardest hearts. First-time director Lee David Zlo- toff surrounds Elliott with an outstanding cast.

From Ellen Burstyn's" rascally grill owner to Marcia Gay Harden's intimidated housewife, "Grill's" cast is every bit as good as the players in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and "Fried Green Tomatoes." If you liked those films, then by all means rent the video of "The Spitfire Grill."
