no The Pittsburgh Press Wedncday.July5. 1989 TELEVISION Stations too fervent onJLag issue Comedian Seinfeld takes new approach EYE Oil THE I7EX70 7" a All three stations Thursday aired excerpts from a taped phone conversation between bookies Paul Janszen and Michael Bertolini in which they discussed Pete Rose, but KDKA's excerpt was a tiny bit different At one point in the tape, Bertolini tells Janszen how much Rose allegedly owed in gambling debts, and Janszen responds with "Jesus Christ" KDKA cut out Janszen's response, but not in a way viewers would notice unless they were familiar with the tape. "I don't think 'Jesus Christ' is appropriate in our newscast," says news director Sue Mclnerney. "I don't think it adds anything." One could argue for keeping Janszen's response, but it's a close editing call and I wouldn't challenge Ms. Mclneraey's decision.

I do think, however, that it is wrong to edit a conversation without letting viewers know a quote has been altered. A "bleep" on the sound track may ta old-fashioned, but it lets viewers know a cut has occurred. KDKA also had problems with its weekend entertainment roundup Thursday at 6 p.m. Mary Robb Jackson had "Grease" playing the Benedum instead of "Annie," and Stacy Smith called Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire" film bio the "Jerry Lewis story." OK, Smith's mistake was an easy one to make. But it is kind of funny, don't you think? I mean, can't you just picture a "Saturday Night Live" skit with Jerry Lewis playing the Killer? (Robert Bianco is The Pittsburgh Press TV-radio editor.) With the time spent on Jerry's stand-up routine, a half -hour isn't much time to tell much of a story, which is why Seinfeld would just as soon dispense with a plot line.

"I want to have a show of aimless wandering through life. But we figure that's a good way to get audiences interested in the beginning. I mean, it will always be some sort of progression of events, but we want to structure it very loosely. "If they pick it up, it's going to firogress in a different direction rom that show. It's going to be much more an interior monologue" that would show what Seinfeld is thinking and how he incorporates everyday experiences into a comedy routine.

David, who was a writer-performer on ABC's "Fridays" and a writer on "Saturday Night Live," does a stand-up act that seems to be so personal, it can be almost painful to watch. Pair him with the more mainstream Seinfeld, and the result is an honest, warm and amusing examination of life in the late '80s. Jason Alexander, who won a Tony Award as best actor in a musical for "Jerome Robbins' Broadway," plays George, Jerry's neurotic manager. Another "Fridays" veteran, Michael Richard, who more recently starred in the syndicated "Marblehead Manor," plays Seinfeld's oddball neighbor, Hoffman. Jerry Seinfeld In NBC special tonight In the pilot, Jerry has met a woman on the road who is coming to New York to visit Does she want to sleep with him or not? George puts him through an angst-wringing analysis of her possible motives.

Jerry, observing decorum, obtains a spare bed for the visitor. George is stricken. "I can't believe you're bringing in an extra bed for a woman who wants to sleep with you! Why don't you bring in an extra guy, Hoffman shows up "to borrow meat" and stays to complain about the Mets' loss, spoiling the game for Jerry, who had taped it and "avoided human contact all day" so he could watch it in suspense. By Robert Blanco sMt The) Pittsburgh Prm Some random notes made while watching last week's local newscasts: The Fourth of July came early, with the local stations waving the flag over the Supreme Court's controversial flag-burning decision on most of last week's newscasts. There were some fine, balanced reports, most notably the story by KDKA'i Harold Hayes on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

on the difficulty involved in amending the Constitution. But far too many stories had an obvious anti-Supreme Court editorial slant, as if freedom of speech and patriotism were somehow conflicting values. The worse offender by far was WPXI's Ron Jaye, who never missed an opportunity to refer to the flag as "Old Glory." It's bad enough to violate the requirements of objectivity, but for newscasters to do so in order to join the flag-waving fervor, with its anti-First Amendment overtones, is puzzling to say the least. Say It Isn't So: Tuesday at 11 p.m., KDKA's Stacy Smith said most of the people the station spoke to during an informal man-on-the-street poll "said the president should have the power to amend the Constitution." One easily can challenge the poll's validity. Viewers have no idea how many people were questioned, how they were selected, whether they accurately represented the general population, or how the question was phrased.

Still, the very idea that KDKA found any American willing to give the president such broad power is just a little frightening. TIT Calgary (L), KBL, 9 p.m, By Hathryn Baker NEW YORK (AP) When a network wants to give you a prime-time show, "aimless wandering" probably is not the best concept to try to sell to them. But if his sitcomstand-up show "The Seinfeld Chronicle' does well enough tonight at 9:30 to become a mid-season replacement on NBC, that's what comedian Jerry Seinfeld hopes it will evolve into. "The Seinfeld Chronicles" has a great cast, smart writing and an unusual format, intercutting a sitcom with Seinfeld's stand-up comedy act. Seinfeld is basically playing himself, a stand-up comedian named Jerry who is a bachelor.

Seinfeld and co-writer Larry David, also a stand-up comic, came up with the idea "over a couple of cups of coffee" on Eighth Avenue one night. "I said, 'NBC is interested in doing some kind of show with me, and I don't have any We figured why not just do a show about how comedians live and how they work and how it happens. "A lot of the show is very much like Seinfeld's own life, he said from Los Angeles. "I mean, it was easy for me to do it. I'm really not acting.

KDKA and WPXI did call-in polls on the flag issue last week.

At least the opinions expressed in polls can add some color to the newscast All you get from a call-in poll is a bogus yesno conclusion and an unearned veneer of credibility and you have to pay to get it If the stations want to poll public opinion, let them hire a polling firm and do it right. Call-in polls are unscientific, self-selected wastes of airtime. They have no business on a newscast KDKA's John Steigerwald did an excellent report last Wednesday at 11 p.m. Using clips from the Pirates-Cubs games of June 20 and June 28, he did a pitch-by-pitch comparison of Andy Van Slyke's Grformance against Cubs' pitcher itch Williams. Instead of just stringing together a highlight reel of strikeouts and home runs, Steigerwald used the station's video to illustrate a point and teach a baseball lesson.

I must admit I had a little trouble following it (Pittsburgh sportscasters seem to assume a high general level of sports knowledge), but I have nothing but raise for the attempt It was the ind of story that only can be done effectively on TV, and precisely the kind of story that needs to be done more often.
