Lebanon Daily News. REINHARD SHARP, PUBLISHERS AND PROPRIETORS. WEDNESDAY. JULY 11, 1971. THE OLD KIRK AT DERRY.

His Past nad tea Present. The shades of evening ate already beginuing to weave their sombre tale AR I write, and little hair hidden atarA acem to laugh at the murmuring of daisies and violets, as they sing in unison to the babblings of the wild romantic Swatara': Auld Lang Syne, as they watch another Fourth--the one hundred and Brat of our independence--waiting for the coming of the morrow. ere It shalt place itself aide by side with the other hundred in the dark gray ashy crypts of the bygone. Here clustered around and round with relics and remembrances IDade many yenta before the women of 276 proclaimed their right 'midat, sycampres and grown weary and wolghty with age, their leaves throwing out ambienta in the air of saddening cadences, Blunde the old kirk of Derry. Old Borea has defaced it somewhat, but Father Time, for the yaara that have gathered on its brow, has dealt gently with it.

Here, sitting in Its quaint old yard, Ila chmplet of stones tottering with mustiness, neglect and ago, I see around inc, between the waving of the periwinkle and the pennyroyal, the names of those brave. Scotch-Irish patriots who left their homes in the long good old pastoral days of Arcadian times, "When dwellers in huts to and anorblo abupherdess up quoon, Carod little for bonnots and lean for shawls, And nothing fur orlaoline'to establish what is now known 18 the Irish Presbyterian church of Pennsyl. vauis, on the ground chat William Penn deeded to them in 1777. Derry, in which the church is a awal! port town of some two or three bundred on the line of the Lebanon Valley rallroad, about thirteen uniles must of Harrisburg. When the old original settlera Bret canie over in the yearn 1716 or 1710, they called it Puxtang.

For a few yours this odd name clung to it until one day some one began to sigh for his so to appease him they called it after their old home, Londonderry. For a few years this name too clung to it, like Paxtang, but another Londor.derry springing up in the county where the Conewago washes, they changed it to a name which it bears nOW--that of Derry. Drifting back in' archwological lore, we see in halt passing slestas these good old won of Londonderry. Muny of them were too of Scotland, and by the toteraurrying and interwixing of these old pioneers we have now the remaine and the history for their descendants of the Scotch-Irish congregation that attended the church at Derry, It is geuerally supposed that when William Penn deeded this land to the churoti be gave some two hundred acres, but the old trustees and deacons must evidently not buve thought much of either "inRation" or hard wouey," for they sold out of these two hundred acres one hundred and ninety-Ove for the exall sum of a shilllug per acre, But dye acres remain of the original grant, and this is desecrated by lassies fair and laddies bold, who make worry pic- nice ou ita well-worn god. In the midst of these Ave acres, "neath the shadows of sycamores, chestnuts and oaks, fu the perfume of duffodile, violets and wild houeysuckles, stands the old church grand by recollections of 'the puat, and glorious and sublime by the thinking of that past.

Built in the year of 1720, it now stands bent and tottering at the age of oue hundred and fifty seven. It is built of logs, plastored together with mud and straw, while for its founda. tion it has but merely about a tout and a bait of huge bowlders, placed upon the ground, not being aunken in, in any manner whatever. In 1760 it was re-built by the adding of a weather-bourd and shingle roof to the outside, and the plastering of its walls and the alight re-modeling of its pews within. Here and there here a weather-board has been torn off, the aight-seekers can see loop holes, and by them in many places ravages wade by the piercing of the arrow and spear.

In the Inside, after passing through one of the four narrow doors--three double and one single--which were the way of ingress and egress, we see so many odd sights that It seems hyperbolical even to make a cursory sketch of them. There slauds the old-fashioned pulpit, where good old William Bettram with his gun fu his hand and his Bible before him, Bret. sent out tocsins of Christianity. Just adjacent to it and immediately before it 18 a quaint box-like apartwent, where the Drat singer of the congregation stood, or where some festiye Diuah and gay Lothair took the watrimoniul vows, those vows which lead mau either to purgatory or to paradise. Above the pulpit is a window, which, however, is batteped up to escape the ravages of relic buptere, who huve already done I much to devastate this old kirk of 113 solemn beauty left it by its ancient parishioners.

The sash of it is made of solid pewter and contains apertures CApable of holding thirty-eight panes of glasa. The other windows, sotne four or six in number, each have fifteen punes. The pewa, capable of holding about two hundred, are those old fashtoned high back sents, which will tell the tale that when they were made corouts and tight-lacing bodices were ol the future. They are all of different build, which might lead one to suppose that each one of these old exploring Argonauts built their own pews. Walbut, white and yellow pine were the: wouds they used aud on many ot the: pews is carving dextrously wrought on by the knife, which must have been their only tool.

The doors to them are all riveted on with buge hinges looking strangely odd And still more ao by the burs and nuts they ate nutted with. Every mail In the building is the old- faabioned hand. made nail, made at the anvil aud forge. Around the old kirk can yet be seem--although the weather and Line baa somewhat effected it -the sane path, the inen chosen to keep guurd over the service from the Indiana wAlked 01l. But short step from the path, balf hidden by tangled shrubs, can he seen what yet romaine of Bertram 'satudy.

In it now lives old John Hutton, the patriarch sexton, who wakes bia living cobbling on the shoes of pho desceudante of those who used to alt In the pare place In the olden times, Much of the old kirk's bistory I learut from John Hatton's mouth, given in that soft patois dialect peculiar to this section of the and much of" which I suw was pointed put by his tinger. la his room can De seets the communion seryice used in the church. ft 1g Aupposed to have been wade in the year 1198, the tenth year of the reign of itlebard the Lion Hearted. It consita of four cougy and two tankards or pitchers of au alloy of two-thirds silver and one-third pewter, two waiters of Iron, fautastically covered with Richurd's seal, aud as it stands to-day in the ruins of Bertram' study it is undoubtedly aud unhesitatingly one of the great est curiosities in the United States. This parish was formerly known by the name of the Mt.

Joy, P'axton and Derry congregation, and the drat rector who had charge of it was the Rev. Wm. Bertram, who died in 1746, and whose body reposes now in Derry churchyard. Aside of it lies also the body of brave old Joha Roan, the secoud pastor, who for thirty years raised up hia voice agulust that of Satan to the kirk of Derry, Preaching was kept up in this church tor one hundred mud 4fty-four years, the Rev. Mr.

Mitchell being Ita lust rector. The old graveyard too 18 8 curious old, odd place, nestling down as it were umid myriads of wild flowers and made aweetly sweet by their perfume. Alwost every step you turn, nome object whose bistory is deep in the pust peele your eye, Hundreds of visitors come to Perry yearly to see the church whose remembrances come olas. tering over you as you view the old ruins in Phlegethon waveleta. The old settlers have come and gone in the Jong ago.

The babbling brook that bubbles through rynnells wild, throttliug cresses and lilies in its wad sportive qureer, seems to tell us that tale, which is like theolden legends and spella of the necromancers whose images vow baunt the land of the teal. The old kirk of Derry in which the voices of the Campbells, the Frazera and the Mooreheads sang and played will soon be--for it cannot stand much longer--a thing of the past, but set while a chestnut burr, a leaf or a dower that has caressed its taco yet remains on mother earth they will have a charm for the tourist, the pleasure and the curiosity seeker Ha seducingly attractive as the charms of Imogen wore to the eyes Posthumous. -Correspondence of Lancaster Intelligencer.
