October 2. 1988 The Pittsburgh Press COLLEGE FOOTBALL Geneva shocked by Tiffin, 16-10; Westminster wins Aigner's five TD passes lead 35-9 By Chris Dates DISTRICT "When you get a chance to score, you have to come up with the points." Chris Smith opened the passing lanes. "They were so aggressive and came so hard with linebackers and stunts. When the defense is set up that way, it can be vulnerable to the quick pass." While Grove City was having a tough time getting to Aigner, the front four continued to harass enemy quarterbacks.

The Presidents' defense got to the Wolverines' Jeff Cass for eight sacks. In three games, has 26 sacks. "If they are going to drop back to throw the ball 50 times, we'll get our share of sacks," Luckhardt said. Smith knew his quarterback would be under pressure, but there wasn't much that could be done. has a big, strong, aggressive defense," Smith said.

"You know they're coming, but you don't know who they're bringing. They gave us more than we could handle." Grove City fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the PAC. is 2-0-1, 2-0 in conference play. In the latest NCAA Division III poll, the Presidents can't be found. That doesn't upset Luckhardt.

"We don't deserve to be ranked right now. We have great potential and we're getting better. But, at this point, I don't know that we are worthy of a ranking." For The Pittsburgh Press WASHINGTON, Pa. When Grove City College took on the United States government, the Supreme Court sided with the Western Pennsylvania school. But when the Wolverines took to the football field yesterday, no one was there to protect them against the Presidents of Washington Jefferson.

When the verdict came in, the Wolverines had to plead no contest: 35, Grove City 9. The heavily favored Presidents came out flat as Grove City dominated the first 20 minutes. When the Wolverines got near the goal line, however, the defense rose to the occasion. Grove City had to settle for a 47-yard field goal by Doug Hart. Hart also missed from 47 and 49 yards.

"When you get a chance to score, you have to come up with the points," Grove City Coach Chris Smith said. "You can't do well if you don't score touchdowns when you get that close." Midway through the second quarter, the Presidents came to life behind senior quarterback Pat Aigner. A preseason Little All-American, Aigner had completed just 35 percent of his passes for 170 yards and one touchdown in the Presidents' first two games. Coach John Luckhardt never considered replacing him. Aigner responded with a career-high five touchdowns against Grove City, his passes going to five different players.

Four of the touchdown passes were to running backs Randy Raner, 8 yards; Mark Craig, 15; Rob Cervone, 7, and Larry Pitts, 53. Aigner completed 20 of 32 for 239 yards and also teamed with wide receiver Rob Dom-browski for a 10-yard TD pass. "We did a terrible job of covering their backs out of the backfield," Smith said. "We didn't get any pressure on the quarterback and he found the open receivers. They went through their whole series of plays to find what would work.

When they found it (circling the backs into pass routes), they stuck with it." Luckhardt thought the Wolverines' pass rush Oafton-lngram Kd. Or maybe it was Tiffin's defense. Whatever it was, Geneva was handed its first defeat in five games, bowing to previously win-less Tiffin, 16-10.

Geneva gained only 162 yards, 29 on the ground. Tiffin did not do much better, picking up 190 yards, 70 on the ground. Geneva fumbled the opening kickoff and Tiffin recovered at the 9. On the first play, Robert Johnson went in for the touchdown. Mickey Thallman's 42-yard field goal made it 9-0 in the first quarter.

John Moores kicked a 48-yard field goal for Geneva in the second quarter. The Golden Tornadoes went ahead, 10-9, on a 6-yard pass from Todd Smith to Larry Betten-court in the third period. But Tiffin came right back with a 63-yard drive, Duane Tyree passing 20 yards to Todd Kelly for the winning score. Westminster 36 Adrian 3 ADRIAN, Mich. Sophomore Brad Tokar of Fort Cherry gained 117 yards 14 below his average on 23 carries and scored on a 17-yard run for Westminster (4-0), ranked second in NAIA Division II.

Joe Micchia completed 11 of 22 passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns 13 yards to Mike Beggy, 33 to Dave Foley and 5 to Jeff Hahn. Mike Ehms scored the Titans' other touchdown on a 24-yard run. Adrian, held to a 33-yard field goal by Jeff Goodes, gained only 127 yards, 55 rushing. It made only two first downs in the second half, one by penalty. IUP 51 Clarion 10 CLARION Touchdown runs of 21 and 20 yards by Paul Palamara touched off a 27-point fourth quarter for IUP, turning an interesting Pennsylvania Conference Western Division game into a runaway for the Indians (4-0, 3-0).

An 89-yard pass play from Anthony Aliucci to James Law and a 63-yard interception return by Bill Greene completed the rout. Palamara also scored IUP's first touchdown on a 30-yard run, but at the half he had only 23 yards on three carries. He finished with 140 yards on 18 carries. Clarion is 1-4, 0-2 and with five games remaining may find it difficult to stretch its non-losing seasons to 28. Shippensburg 24 California 14 SHIPPENSBURG Quarterback Steve Muchowksi completed 10 of 19 passes for 172 yards and ran 13 times for 77 yards and a touchdown as Shippensburg (2-2, 1-0) extended its winning streak to four games against California (2-2, 1-1) in a Pennsylvania Conference Western Division game.

After California's Sean Dens-more scored on a 7-yard pass from Sam Mannery, Mike Williams scored on a 1-yard run for Shippensburg, putting the Raiders ahead at the half, 14-7. Howard Guarini's 29-yard field goal in the third period made it 17-10 before Mannery connected with Steve Brown on a 16-yard scoring pass for California. Mannery completed 15 of 24 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns but had two intercepted. Tight end Terry O'Shea caught five for 64 yards. Kutztown 34 Edinboro 22 KUTZTOWN Eric Werley gained 92 yards on 18 carries and scored on runs of 2, 5 and 2 yards and Joe Svede gained 85 yards on-10 carries and scored on a 1-yard run for Kutztown (2-2).
