The college awarded 947 men and women with associate degrees or certificates during a ceremony in the college gymnasium yesterday afternoon. Earlier in the day, 53 registered nurses attended a Graduate Nurses Pinning ceremony in the Performing Arts Center. Gordon N.

"We hope all who have benefited by this extraordinary community resource, give something back to the community," Lltwin said. "We all have a responsibility to support (the college). The community college needs to be understood, appreciated and supported. Be proud, you have earned the distinction." Barbara Williams Prabhu, president of the Brookdale Community College Alumni Association, urged the graduating class to continue to use the college's facilities.

Graduates going on to another college or university should use the Brookdale's learning resource center, graduates seeking employment can use the employment counseling services and all graduates should continue to support college functions, Ms. Prabhu said. urge the graduates not to forget Brookdale; to use its facilities and the alumni association," she said. Jane Marie Murphy, who spoke for the graduating class, welcomed the audience to the college. Ms.

Family that learns together cuts risk of burning together SV YOU HAVI AY UAIT TWO VIAWS OV COUItt WANT A MWAIDRM CAR EM 17NY L'OT FC2 COMPUTES By THOMAS FLYNN FIRE IN THE HOUSE! It's the one time every member of the family may have to fend for himself yet, often tragically, it's the time when the little ones may need us most. Accordingly, when teaching very young children about fire, the goal is to teach them the behaviors that will help them save their own lives. If your child wakes up and the bedroom is full of smoke, what will he or she do? Most children naturally tend to hide from something that frightens them. Too many firemen vividly recall the tiny, asphyxiated body they only came upon while cleaning up.

because the terrified child had hidden in a closet or under the bed and died of smoke inhalation. Other firefighters will tell you about the child who ran from, or even tried to resist, the rescuers, more frightened of the fireman than of the fire itself. Fire-wise parents train their children against dangerous behaviors like these at an early age. Many children can absorb fire-safety braining in game form as early as the age of three. Most easily tanght are behaviors that can be presented as physical movement games.

"Stop, Drop and Roll," the defense against clothing fires, and "Stay Low and Go" for smoke escape are good examples. Both are easily absorbed by three-year-olds if parents will teach in frequent, short sessions in which the child actually performs the behavior. A child who's been taught to "stay low and go" is tar less likely to react to fire by hiding in the closet. Of course, a child's Ore training should be part of a home escape plan for the whole family. That means each family member must know two ways out of his or her room.

Second-story bedroom windows should be equipped with ropes or ladders for climbing put and every family member must practice with them. Children should sleep Train In Just 6 Months. Around the fifth birthday, most children can absorb braining to feel a door for heat and, if it's hot, to escape via the window. Now, what about the child who runs from the firemen? One reason for this reaction is that today's working firemen usually wear advanced breathing masks that hide their faces, while most cartoons and coloring books toddlers use still depict firemen with visible faces.

The child who's never seen a breathing apparatus is more likely to identify that masked figure as a man from Mars than as a firefighter! Parents can shop a little harder to find coloring books that show firemen as they really look. You might also visit your local fire hall and ask if one of the firefighters could put on air pack so the child can see it close up. The result: a child who's "fire-wise" enough save his or her own life from fire. Thomas Flynn is a writer for the International Society of Fire Service Instructors.
