Malone Debuts Oct. 3 RICHMOND. Va. (AP) -Moses Malone, the 19-year-old Petersburg Hujh School sensation, will make his professional basketball debut with the Utah Stars against the Virginia Squires here Oct.

3 in an American Basketball Association preseason game. The first exhibition game for both teams, to be played at the Richmond Coliseum, was announced yesterday by general managers Jack Ankerson of the Squires and Arnie Ferrin of the Stars. The 6-foot-ll Malone, one of the few players ever to go directly from high school to the pro ranks, signed a multi-million dollar contract Aug. 29 with the Stars and shelved his plans, at least temporarily, to attend the University of Maryland. In his senior year at Petersburg, Malone averaged 35.8 points per game with 26 rebounds and 12 blocked shots in leading his team to its second straight state championship.

Utah will have two former Squires, Jim Eains and Larry Miller, playing against Virginia, while the Squires will counter with former Utah performers Glen Combs, Mike Jackson and Cincy Powell. -v. Just a few "good days" away, the nht moves on the court at the ru-lit time, that extra "something" which catches a coach's eye, there is the bi league, a contract. So it is in the New York Knicks camp now at Monmouth College.

It is a combination of the eacr kids just out of college, the others Decision Of Judge Appealed HOUSTON (AP) Attorneys for the Houston Texans and John Matuszak say they have appealed the temporary injunction that is keeping Matuszak from playing for the World Football League team but the WFL season could end before the appeal is completed. Texans attorney Bill Pak-alka said yesterday the Texans had appealed the injunction ruling by State Dist. Judge Arthur Lesher to the Texas Court of Civil Appeals. 'Pakalka said the appeals process likely would take two months and possibly three. The.

Texans final regular season game is Nov. 13. Matuszak started a hot war between the National Football League Houston Oilers Aug. 28 when he jumped from the Oilers to the Texans. The Oilers obtained a temporary restraining order that kept Matuszak from playing for the Texans pending an application for the injunction Sept.

9. The injunction keeps Matuzak out of Texan uniform pending settlement of the dispute. Matuszak, the No. 1 pick in the 1973 pro football draft, signed a four-year contract with the Oilers last year for $185,000 over the four year period. The big defensive tackle's Texan contract is for spread over five years with no bonus.

Matuszak must first get free of his Oilers contract and play for the Texans to get paid. The Texan attorneys claim Matuszak's standard NFL contract is invalid because it is unenforceable under Texas anti-trust laws. year or so past graduation and the players who made it to the top and couldn't hold on. It's a pressure-packed few-days you give all. try until you you can't go any further, then go further.

The rookies came to camp Wednesday and many will leave when the veterans report in next Wednesday. It's that brief. Players like Eddie Mast and Luther Rackley, Doth of whom once were Knicks, moved on to other teams and dropped down to the minor leagues, vie with this year's college grads. They also vie with players like Fred Hilton, former Buffalo player now a free agent, Scott English, former Phoenix player, Martin Terry, drafted by-Chicago and cut loose and John Pete Perry, cut by the Lakers. In camp also are former collegians who took a fling abroad, Jim Romeo of Long Island University and Ted Martiniuk of St.

Peter's, both of whom played a year in Africa, of all places. Romeo, who played with the Mozambique team in one of the two African leagues, said basketball is a growing thing in the former Portuguese colony. He said games there attracted 9,000 or so and the play is on a par with Italian basketball. The game is played in high schools and college there, he said, and will someday rival soccer in interest. There are also players like guard Dennis Bell, a real competitor from Drake who was the Knicks' number five draft choice in 1973 and just missed making it last year.

He played in the Eastern League while awaiting his chance this season. Another guard, Ken May-field from Tuskegee, is back for another try after Eastern League play. Mayfield displayed a nice shot, but was said to lack 'defensive ability in camp last year. He has a civil service job working with youth in New York's Bronx, but would gladly take a leave of absence if the Knicks ask him to hang around. The retirement of Dave De Busschere and Jerry Lucas last season, the loss of guard Dean Meminger in the expansion draft and the apparent inability of Willis Reed to play adds to the hope.

There are more positions open. Three or four will make the Knicks. There are 20 hoping. Ben DeAngells Charles Weissman GENUINE CEDAR CEILING BEAMS SPECIAL PURCHASE 3'x6' Six Assorted Lengths 8' to 20' 4 Reg. 2.00 gj ft.
