The Paris News February 9,1993 Records 14 A Kindergarten screening Chisum Elementary School will be screening kindergarten and first grade children for the Challenge Program which serves talented students. An information meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to explain the nomination process. Nominations will be taken from parents and teachers until Friday, and the nominees will be screened to determine eligibility. For more information, call Robert Ballard or Donna Steffey at 737-2820.

Wright files for re-election Grady Wright of Blossom has filed for reelection to the Region VIII Board of Directors of Region VIII Education Service Center representing Lamar and Delta counties. Ballots will be mailed in March to school district boards of trustees in Region VIII and will be canvassed by the Region VIII Board of Directors at their April meeting. The new terms of office will begin June 1, 1993. Testing schedule set Students who are no longer enrolled and haven't passed all sections of the TEAMS or TAAS tests, but have met all other graduation requirements, may retake the tests. Individuals who wish to retake the exit level tests may pick up a registration packet at any high school campus, district central office or education service center.

Registration for the TAAS writing test must be received in Iowa City, Iowa, no later then 5 p.m. Feb. 18. The registration for the TAAS reading and mathematics tests or the TEAMS tests must be received by April The TAAS writing test will be administered at Paris High School Thursday, March 11. The TAAS reading and TEAMS English language arts will be given Tuesday, May 4, and the TAAS and TEAMS mathematics tests will be on May 5.

Miears speaks to AARP James Paul Miears, owner of Miears Pharmacy, will be guest speaker at the Feburay meeting of the American Association of Retired Persons. The meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Alford Center on the Paris Junior College campus. Miears, a registered pharmacist and a certified I.

V. Pharmacist, will tell of the new I.V. services offered. All AARP members and others interested are invited to attend. HG board extends contracts From Staff Reports HONEY GROVE The Honey Grove School Board has extended the contacts of the district's three principals until June, 1995.

Those whose contracts were extended by the board Monday night included Jeff Clark Robert Milton and Beverly Felts. In other action, the board called a trustee election for May 1, with the terms of Cheryl Beavers and Roger Dawdy to expire. The filing period begins Feb. 15 and ends March 17. The elementary school special education staff made a recommendation that "life skills" be taught at all campuses, however the board elected to wait until the legislature acts before commitments are made.

Those making the presentation included Debbie Bowie, Kim Richards, Sabrina Bryant, Tana Decker and Carolyn Whitlock. In other business, the board approved a two-night band trip in April; approved the purchase of 10 new band uniforms; approved a resolution for the Fannin County Appraisal Board to set aside $30,000 per year for construction of a new building. Robert Slider Tho Paris Mows NL trustees approve plan From Staff Reports The North Lamar Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a networking technology plan Monday in it's regular meeting. Superintendent James Dawson said the board accepted a proposal to network the entire district through fiber optics.

In addition to providing financial and student services, the networking system also would contain in- strucional software. Wiring for four terminals in each classroom would be provided to allow the phasing in of instructional computers and other technology. Dawson said other money would go toward providing students' access to computers. The board called for the election of trustees to be held Saturday, May 1, Dawson said. Persons desiring to file for the two places must do so between Feb.

17 and March 17. Assistant Superintendent Darrell White reported that the underwriters for the district's property and liability insurance inspected the district recently. He said several recommendations were made, including emergency lighting in a few areas. The transfer policy was discussed in length, according to Dawson, especially concerning substitute teachers. Other bidders included Guaranty National Bank, NationsBank, and Lamar National Bank. Legacy Autoplex's low bid was accepted to provide a pickup truck for Precinct 3. Legacy bid $11,895 on a 1993 GMC half-ton pickup truck. Lowry Chevrolet bid $13,150, which was for a heavy-duty work truck, according to Mark Lowry, and Kosterman Motor Co. bid $12,794.

The county will advertise for bids for a pickup truck for Precinct 2 and also will let bids to sell a one-ton truck in that precinct. Williams Brothers Auto Salvage was the lone bidder to buy a wrecked sheriffs department vehicle. The firm bid $2,352.50 for the 1992 Ford Crown Victoria, which was stolen and wrecked during an inmate escape attempt several months ago. A request from the sheriff to let bids for fencing at the Lamar County Jail was put off until the architect can be contacted. Sheriff B.J.

McCoy asked that fenced security areas be built at the three fire exits. The cost, he said after the meeting, would be between $13,000 and $15,000 for the approximately 1,050 feet of wiring. proved an amended will allow those currently in the district who are actively substituting to pay tuition for their child to continue attendance in the district, but in the future substitutes will not be eligible to transfer their children. Stout said the election will be to fill three full-term places on the board, including Place 6, from Cunningham which is now occupied by Johnny Patterson; Place 2, from Blossom presently filled by Ronald Roddy; and Place 3, from Deport, now occupied by Kenneth Gifford, Sr. Filing for election begins Feb. 16, and ends March 17. In other action, Stout said the board extended the contracts of Assistant Superintendent Dr.

POLICE Compiled from area police reports A 35-year-old Paris man was in good condition at St. Joseph's Hospital and Health Center today after a shooting incident Monday Gerald Walters of 8th Street NE was shot in the leg at 10:37 p.m. Monday in the 800 block of East Houston Street. No arrests have been made in the case, according to Paris Police Department reports, and little information is available concerning the details of the incident.

OBITUARIES Patrick Ashton Kelly DALLAS Patrick Ashton Kelly, 48, of Ppwderly died Monday, Feb. 8, in a Paris hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at Grove Hill Funeral Home Chapel in Dallas.

Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Mr. Kelly was employed at Earth Grains Bakery in Paris. He was born in Dallas and attended school there. He served in Vietnam in the Army and was decorated for service with two Bronze Stars.

Surviving are his wife Rianna; two sons, James Patrick Kelly and Justin Kelly; three daughters, Gwen, Cassi and Trista; a twin brother, Michael J. Kelly and another brother, James C. Kelly. Sam Dennis Furgeson Sam Dennis Furgeson, 70,2185 E. Cherry, died Monday, Feb.

8, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, in Gene Roden's Funeral Home Chapel with Dr.

Pat Otwell officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr.

Furgeson was born May 11, 1922, in Lamar County, a son of William Samuel and Ida Cox Furgeson. He was the retired owner- operator of Furgeson Phillips 66 Station in Arthur City. He had also been a patrolman for the Paris Police Department. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ray (Sherry) Ball of Arlington; a brother, R.V.

Furgeson of Arlington and a granddaughter Robyn Ball of Arlington. Pallbearers will be Bob Rayburn, Jamie Keller, FranMe Flynn, Gene Allen, John Brown and Lawton Cooper. Grady Frank Hearn Grady Frank Hearn, SW, died Monday, Feb. 8, at St. Joseph's Hospital Services will be held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday Feb. 10, in Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dwight Blankenship officiating. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m.

Tuesday at the funeral home Mr. Hearn was born Oct. 12, 1910, in Lamar County, a son of Frank H. Hearn and Annie Rismger Hearn. He attended Paris schools and married Lorene Kyle Jan 2 1932.

She diedqec. 13, 1978. He was owner of Hearn Produce Co. and had been in the pro- duce business about 30 years when he retired in 1976. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are three children, Belva Jo Carney of Palestine, Gerald Ray Hearn of Tulsa, and Nancy Ann Schmal of Houston; a sister, Sarah Ingram of Honey Grove; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Chris Hearn, Ken Hearn, Kevin Canole, Craig Carney, Kerry Carney, and Charles Hearn. Melvin Scales Sr. HUGO, Okla. Melvin Scales 78, of Hugo died Monday, 8, in Pushmataha County Hospital in Antlers.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the South Central District Building with Elder John Brown officiating. Rogan Funeral Home will make burial in Crosley Cemetery. Surviving are six daughters, Brenda Mays of Hugo, Linnie Bea Rucker, Nona Alexander, Lula Scales, Georgia Jewell Scales and Glenda Johnson, all of Oklahoma City; four sons, Melvin Scales Jr.

and Olenda Scales, both of Hugo, Roy Scales of Dallas, and James Scales of McAlester, 30 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bonnie Ricks of Deport, Texas, and Lucille Williams of Fort Worth; and two brothers, John Martin Scales of Paris and Travis Scales of Sapulpa, Okla. Minnie Maude Shelton Minnie Maude Shelton, 93, Rt. 1, Detroit, died Monday, Feb. 8, at McCuistion Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at 4 p.m.

Wednesday, Feb. 10, in Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Bluff Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs.

Shelton was born Dec. 10, 1899, in Bandera, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Clayton Stribling. She married Samuel David Shelton in 1921.

He died Dec. 17, 1963. She was a member of Martin Memorial United Methodist Church in Detroit. Surviving are two sons, David Shelton of Detroit and Denzil Shelton of Paris; eight grandchildren, 11'great-grand children; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Irene Broadway.
