TIIK COINT OK TDK DEAD. at the Census Office for Collecting Vital Statistics. TO MAKE A CANVAS TOR THE CENSUS P.Y HEALTH TO BE Of ELECTRICAL COl'N UNO MACHINE.

An important part of the mortality sind vitfll statistics which will appear in the returns of the coming census is now Hearing completion. In order that these statistics might be as widely useful as possible it was decided to include the statistics for the five years preceding May SI next in certain cities where the records of deaths. were kept np. The vital statistics for the census year eliding July 1 will be collected by the census enumerators and will apply to the entire country. John S.

who has charge of this work, thought, aud l'orter agreed with him. that the returns of deaths for one year owing to various causes would not give a satisfactory basis which to found deductions. It was. theretore, decided to take the returns gathered by the sanitary authorities in a number of the principal cities and tabulate them for live years and print them as ft part of the report of the census. AGENTS SOW AT WORK.

work is now being done. Agents of the Census Office are at work in Boston, New York, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington compiling the vital statistics as gathered by the local authorities. Owing to changes made in the wards the statistics gathered in Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis will only be for a fraction of the five years. The entire state of New Jersey will be included in this inquiry, as the work of the state board of health, which receives monthly reports from all of the state, enables the census authorities to obtain the statistics of the entire state as conveniently as those of a leading city in that state.

BY PUNCHING HOLES IV CARDS. The agents of the Census Office engaged in this work instead of filling out long schedules with names, dates, are following a simpler method, which is a part of the new electrical system of tabulation which is to be tried in the present census. What is known as a stamping machine is used, which has a face something like a type writer, only, in place of keys, there are Each of these holes is clearly designated and the operator, using a punch attached to the machine, but which moves freely over the face, into a card lying beneath round holes. These holeB always mean the name thing, as the cards are of the same size. A card with a number I of rounded apertures in it when taken from this stamping machine read by an expert and him that a certain individual named in the schedule white or black or Chinese.

Indian, the sex, age. place of birth, profession, trade or occupation and a number of other interesting facts which want to know about those who have died. TO BE COUNTED BT ELECTRICITY. These cards are arranged by counties or sanitary and sent to this city, where Mr. Hollerith, the inventor, having put up in a large room in the Census Office a number of ingenious machines ith which he proposes to do the counting and the tabulation of the next census by electricity.

The chief of the division, i Mr. W. A. King, is now arranging the cards received from the agents and preparing to run them through the machine. He expects to be able to know in a short time how many died in thrse various places during the past five years and a number of interesting biographical details.

When he has a number of cards of a certain county or district, each one representing an individual now dead, and he wants to know how many died of a certain age and other facts, be begins to feed the cards into a machine. LOOKS LIKE A PIANO. This machine looks something like an upright piano. Above what would be the key board in the space which contains the vital organs of a piano there are a number of small din Is which are beneath a of These dials record whr.t the have I to say. The are slipped in a brass platform and a pad containing a lot of needle- like projections is brought down on it.

When there is a hole in the card the needle slips through. When there is none the needle is pressed back. Those that go through, however. are plunged into a bath of mercury where the electrical connection between the needlo aud the dial ia broken and the hands ou the dial move one point. A number of can record at one and the same time, so that a large class of facts can readily be recorded.

The face of the dial shows bow the record stands at any time and the figures can be taken off. It ia claimed that the tabulation of returns can be made not only more rapidly but more accurately than by actual count. By a skillful electrical connection a box full pigeon holes at the aide of the operator of the machine can be used to place the cards when taken from the machine, so that they will be accurately assorted. AMUSEMENTS. The Glee Club concert of the Yale Glee and Banjo at Lincoln Hall this evening will a gala society event.

The gathering began soon after breakfast, although there were bad weather sigus to be seen then. I he wet streets caused inauy a little heart to feel like lead this morning when the dawn came, but there was soon a procession moving toward the home of the l'resideut, even before the guards had all reported for duty. They comt alone, in puirs. in triplets, but more often in thrones or hordes of from Ave to a dozen, each with a small basket of eggs, and the largest one with a lunch.
