AS OLD CASE IS A EW STAGE NVK S. TUE RUTLAD AND IiURLINCTOX RAlLSOAIiCOK-rANV JUDGMENT ENTERED AT LAST, BUT NOBODY RESPONSIBLE. When the track of the Rutland and Burlington Railroad was extended, in 1S50, from the depot of that road at tbo foot of Maple street to connect with the Vermont Central track, its lino passed where the track now runs, between the old store ct Iaac Nye, at the foot of King street, and wharf. The company and Mr. Nye failed to agrco npon the damages to be paid by the road for the strip of land, 10 feet wide and extending across Mr.

Nye's property, which was taken by the railroad company and thereupon, agreeably to the statute therein force. Commissioners were appointed by the Supreme Court to appraise tho damages. And they, in May, 1S5I, mado an award of $1,700 to Mr. Nyc. This was not satisfactory to Mr.

Nye. lie appealed from tho appraisal, and the caso was entered in the September term of the Connty Court in 1651, Levi Underwood being Mr. Nyes attorney, and I). A. Smalley tho attorney for tho railroad company.

John Picrpoint, Ezra Mecch and Joseph Marsh were appointed commissioners. But Mr. Ny did not press the cac, and it mado no progress. Mr. Nye, as hasbecn often remarkedof him, wa a rery peculiar person and the man who kept dry goods on tho shelves of his store for thirty or forty years, refusing to sell them, and allowed large rafts of square timber to rot in hi dock rather than to seek customer or accent an offer, was the la-t man to be troubled by "tho law's delays.

The Court had ordered that the $1,700 awarded as land damage bo deposited in the Merchants Bank, pending the appeal. Mr. Nye doubtless thought that that and something more would some day bo award- id to him but ho was not in any particular need of the money. He was in uo hurry- he never was in a hurry about anything, The road was in possession of the land. and dil not ore about the dchy.

And so tho case hunr along. From time to time one Commissioner after another died or dropped out. and others took their places. The Rutland and llurlingtjc Rairoad Company became bankrupt, and finally ceased to exist as a corporation; tho bondholders tasinf the road under a new charter. Tho Mer chants Bank, which was supposed to bo the depositary of the sum originally awarded, went into liquidation and wts succeeded by the Merchants National.

Still tbo ca-e kept its place upon the docket, and was adjourn ed from term to term. In 1870, if wo recollect aright, Mr. Njo died, in his old store, and was laid out lor burial upon its counter. His two brothers became his executors and heirs to this uit with his other property But still the case wai not determined. One of the brothers died a year or two since.

The other, it would -ecm, at last pressed for a decision. The caso appeared, usual. on the docket of the term of court which closed last week, with Mr. Engleby takin the phce of Mr. Underwood as counsel for Nye's estate Mr.

Phelps in place of D. A Smalley, who course, had long since, on his appointment as IT. S. Judge, ceased to appear in the case, and had gone to his long Inme.with no-t of tho parties originally interested. as attorney for the railroad company and 11.

tt. itoyce, m. Pope, and C. F. Ward as Commissioners.

The Commissioners mado their report to the court, stating seme of the facts above noted, stating also that it did not appear hether or no the $1,700 originally award ed had ever been deposited or not, as ordered, awarding $1 ,000 as suitable damages to Mr. Nye, and leaving the question of the interest for twenty-ssveo years to the court. The court affirmed the report but held that in view of Mr. Nyes negligence in as serting bis claim, no interest should bs, al lowed. The counssl for Mr.

Nye's estate took exceptions but whether the cao will be again appealed, remains to be seen. As it stand, judgment for $1,000 is ordered, in favor of Mr. Nye's estate, against a dead railroad corporation. If the case Is still continued in what may be called its sscond tage, some curious questions of law and fact ill ari-e as whether the present Rut- Und Railroad Company, which holds posses-ion of the land, can be made to pay the judgment against its predecessor; where the 00 is, if it ever was deposited who withdrew it, if it ever was withdrawn whether tho Merchants National is liable for a deposit made with its predecessor, the Merchants Bink; and others. If these actions are to be tried, it is to be hoped that they will be decided short of another twenty-seven years to come.

But if Mr. Lhckens. who was in bis yootntui prime when tbe case began, had had its facts and characters, be would have baa material for novel which might have nvailod "Uliafc House." Ucsiness and Lb)e. At a meeting of the stockholders cf tho Crown Point Iron Company, the other day, the following directors were elected for the enduing year Gen. As there appctrtt in tho public occasionally, mMeading articles upon raro coins, and person aro apt to get ex arrscratcd Mean of tho raluc of their pocket piece, in order to glre omo really trustworthy inf rm.itiin upon a subject which is yorly increaing in interest, wepre-ent to our readers an ab-tract ot a paper read before the Vermont Numismatic Siciety, at it litrcsular mcrtin, which will be found of much intercut and value. ThU society organized io June, 1877 and now numbers some twenty. Its object, as its name implies the study ot coins and its meet-ing'.

which are held qairterlv, ara full of interest on account of the exhibition of fine specimens of the coins cf all countries by its member. Owini to the increasing interest manifested throughout the country in the scienco of Numismitics', the society requested its secretary. Dr. C. 1.

Thayer, to prepare a paper npon the subject, and it is an abstract of thU which wo subjoin COIN'S IN GENERAL. The metal of which coins are composed ars fc'rst relied into narrow strips of the width and thickness necesary, and then parsed throuch a machine which cita it into circultr piece-, or di-k0, which receive thj name of panchct. Cjinj, conTquently, have two "idc, and, to di'stinruLsti tbem, thsy are ctlled OZrtrj and Utters The Obverse is thesiJ? upon which tbe head or principal figure phceJ, and usually bears the dite aIo, in other words the "held." The Reverse it the other side, or "tti and Usually bears tho coat of arms ot the country i it, or the value of the piece or both. The lettering and words found upon coins are called inscriptions, or rgends. The ppace not occupied by liurcor inscriptions is called the eitrgue, and usually contains tho date.

There aro aKi types and varieties oT tbo same coin. The word typo rcf.r to the dcign on a coin, while a variety i a "light variation in style and lettering, but not marked enough tj constitute a distinct type. As, for an example, there are three types of the 1793 cent. tbe chin." the "wreath" and the "liberty cap." In 17D3 a cent nppearcd having upon its obverse, head, tho head ot Liberty and on its revere a chain of 13 links emblematical or the 13 original State cnclo-ing the words "one cent That is the chain cent. Soon after there appeared a cent with a wreath in pi ice of the chain, and it is called the wreath cent.

Liter in the year tho figure ol liberty had a pole over her shoulder with a liberty cap upon tho end, constituting tbe liberty cap type of the 1793 cent. The term 'varietM is illustrated by the cent of the same year 1793. On sme of them the letters cav' in the word America omitted, so that the legend reads, United States of Amen," in-icstead of America. Other examples are found in the ciats of I8ti7, 1817, IP39, I813.IS55,c!c. The silver coinage al-o presents the samo and a per-on possessing all cf them in his collection has a valuable property.

tbe regular issue cf the United Statr mint, different States have K-ud coins Vermont heading the line, and pstibli-hing a mint at Ilii pert in the ycir 1785. Toey are called Colonials and are but very rarely met with in circulation, and command premiums. Of tbe regular isue of the United States mint, there are a good many of great value, and in the following lUi I have endeavored to give tbe price at which they arc held by coin dealers. Of course, a coin that battered or worn is not worth as much as a sharp, clear, uncirculated t-pcciinen. SILVER DOLLARS.

The first year in which they were coined was 1791, aad specimens of this date are worth from $10 to $40; IbOl is also very scarce, a specimen in fair condition bringing anywhere from $300 to (1,000. There arc but six or cteht known to be in existence; 1830. Ih3A, 1639 dollar, with a Hying tiagle, are verv rare and arc worth Irom $5 to (10: 1851 and 1853 arj two mors that bring good premiums when found in good condition, and are quotsd at $10 each; 185.1 bring from $5 to $10. There are other dates of the dollars thtt are tare, depending, however, upon wine slight variation in the number of stirs, iz of the eagle, etc. HALF DOLLARS- Of the half dollar-t, there aro many scarce date, but not ns mcch so as the dollars.

The tirst date appearing on them is 1791, and specimens bring from $150 to $5. 1795 is quite rare and is worth from $5 tj $25. Tbo same may be aid of tbe 1797. The dates 1801. lSOi, 1F03 are scarce I but do not compare with the precccding.

1815 i another searco halt dollir and is worth from $1 to 151 and like the dollars ot the samo date, are becoming scarce and are worth from $1 to $3. QUARTER DOLLARS. lu 1795 tbe first quarter appeared, amlas there were none others coined until the year 1804, it makes them very scarce and it takes from to (5 to buv one. 1801, 1805, ls0(i and 1807 are more plenty, but are worth from 50 cents to Tne same may be said of tbe 1815 The and tho 18-27 quarters aro by far tbe raret and are worth some $5 to $30. The only other re- maining rare date is the 1353 without the arrow heads each sido of the date.

Trice from $2 to $5. DIKES. Of the dimes, any that are dated before 1820 are scarce and bring suasrangin? from 50 cents to $10. The 18-22is also rare arid sells for $1 If'21, 1828, 1815, 1K3. wubont the arrow head, arc no plenty, readily bring premiums if in goad condition.

HALF Any coined before 1829 arc extreme ly rare, the date 1802 being conMicred by some tbe rarest coin in tho United States senc. except the 1801 dollar. An 1502 half dime was sold at auction March 5th, 1878. in New York, and brought 172 50. The other half dimes arc compar atively plenty, with the exception of Im wben tne mint stopped their isuo.

SILVER TDRtK-CENT TIECES. Thc'c were first issued in 1851 and con tinued until 1873 inclcivc, when their i-suo was forbidden bv act of CVngrcs. The raro one arc the lb55 and those from 1803 to 1873 inclusive, and any of these dated bring Irom 10 to mi cent. MCKLKS. The only rare nicklecoinis the 1856 flv ing-eagle penny, wlncb was t-sued more as a pattern piece than a a part of therrg- ulir writ, but is occasionally lound circulation.

Trice from 1 to 3 dollirs. rorrER CENTS. These are by far tho rarer of the scries. there being so many more collector of them than of silver, lhey were hrst i-sucd in 1(93. and each vear saw a new cent i-sued up to and including irj.
