FIRST TIME IN MOVIE HISTORY 16-Year-OId Girl To Play Part Of Salome On Screen By JAMES BACON MADRID, Spain For thej first time in screen Salome, one of history's earliest! juvenile delinquents, will be' played by a 16-year-old girl. That's the historically authentic age of the young seductress who asked for the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. Debut Brigid Bazlen makes her screen; debut as Salome in "The King of Kings, the story of Christ, now being shot in spain. When I first saw Brigid walk' across a hotel lobby here, I turned to some friends and said: "There's the most typically Spanish beauty I've seen yet." Her hair is anthracite Hack. her eyes flash like a go-ahead traffic green, of course.

Her figure voluptuous. But she's not Spanish. Up until a few months ago, Brigid was a high school fophomore in Chicago and a television actress little known outside of the Windy City. the daughter and niece of Chicago's Daly sisters, a quartet of Irish girls who are writers and commentators. mother is Maggie Daly, a fashion commentator; her aunts are Kathleen Daly, executive vice president of an advertising agency; Sheila Dsly, synicate columnist who writes for and about teen-agers and Maureen Daly, novelist.

Attracts Actresses Salome is a role that has at. tracted actresses for years from Nazimova. the silents to Rita Hayworth in her prime as a screen love goddess. How Brigid got it is best explained by producer Sam Bronston. "I found her by accident," says Bronston.

"I was convinced the part called for a teenager but I didn't want any of the established teen-age the ones who are spread all over the fan magazines. "Agents submitted girls by job lots. One day there was a flock of them in my outer office in New York. I walked out to tell my secretary something and spotted this black-haired beauty among them. She looked like a younger version 'of Elizabeth Taylor.

"I asked her if she had a passport. She said no. I told her she had better get one." Simple" As That It was as simple as that. Brigid went back to Chicago, applied for a passport and waited. "Two weeks later, I got a call from Mr.

Bronston's office, telling me to get ready to go to Spain, In a few days I was here studying for Salome." Bronston takes credit for discovering Brigid but gives credit to Betty Ray, dancer wife of director Nicholas Ray, for getting a performance out of a relative newcomer. "Betty took Brigid under her wing and worked her mercilessly The Wteki VILLAGE Today through Saturday: "Ben- Charlton Heston, Stephen Hur," Boyd. From there, she wound up in Bronston's Spain. She has one worry: "Ikind of ''Dark At The Top Ol The hate to start off in the Robert Preston, Dorothy playing such a wicked person but my mother and aunts keep telling me, 'Certainly, you So I guess, it's okay." for 'eight weeks.

"This young girl will perform a dance on the screen." Bronston says, "That will last six minutes and I think it will impress audiences like it did the MGM front office." Given Contract MGM execs; after viewing the rashes, signed Brigid to a studio contract. Her dance will be one of the few Salome dances without the traditional veils. Researchers lor "The King of Kings" insist Salome and her seven veils was the creation of a dancer -who came centuries after the real Salome. In the movie, Brigid will seductively charm Herod with a pure Oriental-African dance movemenl which the researchers say is 2,000 years old. Brigid has never taken a dramatic lesson and is probably the only Salome in history who ever got her show business start while playing hopscotch.

That was in 1956. In the 12 years before that. Brigid had an uneventful childhood, going to parochial school in Chicago. Seen At Play A TV producer friend of her mother's saw Brigid playing the children's game in front of her apartment house. He put her in a children's local TV series.

Later she became the 12-year-old hostess- of a children's show on Chicago TV. Producer David Susskind spotted her in the show and signed SEDUCTIVELY Bazlen, a voluptuous 15- year-old, will play Salome in "The King of Kings," marking the first time for history's young seductress to be portrayed by an actress whose age is historically accurate. Producer Sam Bronston selected the Chicago schoolgirl with the remark, "she looked like a younger version of Elizabeth Taylor."
