Ajk Immenwe Gathering of Colored Citizens.

APDRF8PF.S BY DOfGI.ASS, COL. ROBKKT G. INOKRSOLL, HON. SAMlKI. SfflKIXABAKOFK AND J.

RESOLUTIONS? SCENES IN THE HALL, The interest felt by the colored people la the questions raised by the recent decision ol the U. 8. Supreme Court on the civil rlghfe bill, was manlftMted by the immense crowd that applied last Hfcjht for admission at Lincoln hall, where the meeting, called by a committee of colored men to dHcuss the derision, was held. As early as six o'clock jicoplc bejfan to arrive at the hall, and long before the hour for calling the meeting to order the crowd within the hall was so dense that the had to be shut. It was only by most energetic action on the part of the committeemen.

aided by the police, that the gentlemen to speak, and to sit on the piatforuusucceeded in m-iklug their way through the crowd that besieged doors. While wore upwards ol people in the hall, choking the aisles and all exits, fully as large a number were turned away. Though the gathering was largely composed of colored people, there were many white people present. The crush In the hall was so great that diso rder was threatened indifferent parts of the hall several times during the evening, but quiet was jrb time rt stored without much difficulty. The crush even reached the st-ige and left but little space for the speakers.

Among those who sat ON THE STAGE wr re a score or more of ladles, Including a delegation of colored school teachers. Among those who sat on the stasfe liesides the presiding officer, Prof. J. M. Gregory, were col.

A. Fleetwood. Quite a list of possible speakers was announced Iiefore the meeting, but so much time was occupied by the of Mr. Douglass and Mr. Ingf rsoll that the subsequent proceedings were cut short.

It was after 11 o'clock when the meeting adjourned. Rev. F. Grlmke opened the proceedings with prayer. Prof.

Gregory having stated the object of the meeting, a series of resolutions were read by Mr. Lewis 11. Douglasu and unanimously adopted. THE RESOLUTIONS. These resolutions set forth that words of Indignation or disrespect aimed at the Supremo Court would Ik? useless as a means for securing the protection due to the manhood and citizenship of the colored race; but, on the contrary, would tend to alienate the friends or the race; that It is the primal duty of friends of justice to to It that the full an-f equal protection of the laws are afforded every citizen; that the colored people noli the republican party to tbe enforcement of its demand for equal rights; th.it they remind the democratic party of its declarations in recognition of the equality of all men before the law; that it is the paramount duty I ol the colored voter to give his aid and support to the i puny that will give force and meaning to bueh utter- anc- that no more conclusive evidence of sincerity ol Mich utterances can he a Corded than the adoption in the several states of measures guaranteqjpg the protection sought to be established by the civil rights act of 1W5; that the meeting invite the cooperation of all good men and women in securing tii legislation necessary to complete tlie freedom of the colored citizen, and advises the immediate organization of civii lights associations throughout the country.

mk. YKr.vrr.icK nornt.Ass i was then introduced and lu-tlly applauded. He spoke half an hour, reading his utterances from manuscript. Only mean and base men, he declared, saw any justice in this triumph over the colored race. He thought that the civil rights law, ena -ted in the interest of liberty, was entitled to the bencin of every doubt as to its validity, but it had been subjected to the narrowest construction.

1 He urged his hearers, however, to observe moderation in their conduct. The people, he declared, wanted no black Ireland in the United States. COL B. o. INGEKSOLL was next introduced, and Ins name was received ith wild applause.

Before he begau speaking a stentorian voice in the rear of the hall shouted, 'IIuir. il for Blaine!" but Mr. Tngeooll at once quieted the enthusiastic tumult by raising his hand. He for nearly two hours. He had a large bundle of manuscript, on which the legal part or his address was written.

At intervals, how ever, he drop- ptd his manuscript and passed out into the region of spontaneous eloquence. Every eloquent burst I ivi 1 an immediate response from the audience, who stamped. unl shuutcd in applause, i Once after a storm of applause a colored woman in one of the galleries near tlie stage, carried away by the excitement, rose to her feet and I beg in jumping and bobbing up and down in the old ting fashion, droning out some hymn, to whieh she kept time with her feet. The whole crowd at once broke into a roar of laughter. it some diRlculty the neighbors of the demonstrative i woman polled licr down Into her seat, where, having discovered her mistake, she remained quiet 8 during the rest of the evening, col.

Ingersoll de- dared the decision as the worst one made by the 1 Supreme court since the Died Scott decision was announced. He declared the right of the citizen to critici-e the decision of the Supreme Court, even i 1 hough it must be taken for granted that the judges arrived at lit 1r conclusions honestly, lie I made a long legal argument against the decision, claiming that the court in previous utterances had maintained the right of congress to enact laws as had been nullilicd by tills decision. He referred to the Supreme Court of old I days, as having stood by the institution of slavery, and said that it was the last fortress of the eonfed- eracy to yield. He declared that in this decision. instenu of going back to slavery days, the court should have begun with the last amendments.

They should have another amendment, and still another, until the freedom and equal rights or every citizen was assured. He declared that the republl- can p. rty should not be held responsible for this decision unless it indorsed It. When he closed lie he was greeted with three routing cheers, led by Mr. Frederick Douglass.

OTHER FrrAKERS. Hon. Samuel Shellabarger made a brief address in mod'rate tone, saying that whether the Congress that passed the law or the Supreme Court that annulled it was mistaken, the course now was to cor- rect the mistake by a new law. Rev. Dr.

Rankin, the last speaker, urged mixed schools, mixed churches, and perfect equality. The Training School tor winter course of leetures before the Washington Training Sliool for Nurses as Inaugurated last evening at All souls' church. Dr. J. Taber Johnson presided and made a brief introductory address.

Mr. Perry delivered an address upon the nobility of the calling of nurse; Dr. II. P. Fry spoke upon I he nat ure of the training required Tor nurses, and Prot.
