When the itin rose at Upp- Marlboro' yesterday its rays shone on the half naked and horribly mangled body of Joe Vermillion hanging from the Tatuxcnt railroad bridge. On his feet were his jail chains.

His neck was cut by the rope and his tongne lolled out of his mouth. About 7 o'clock the body was cut down and Justice Harris held an inquest. Jailer llidgeway tolil the story of the mob's coming, as related in The Star's dispatches yesterday. One of his assailants he recognized. The Baltimore Sunt correspondent in a grnpliic account of the affair says.

As soon as he was released the prisoner wrenchcd off an iron sash from the window and made a furious attack upon his assailants. He was coon overpowered, but not until he had brought blood, which was smeared over the iron slats of the cell door and the hash. A rope was tied around his neck, his feet and lianas were bound, and he was dragged down the SU ps, out of the jail, and thence into the street. There he again resisted, and two men. one at his feet and the other at his head, dragged, shoved and earned him to the bridge, the mob accompanying on horseback.

All the brothers begged the mob not to harci Joe, but their appeals fell upon deaf ars. Their cries for mercy were still ringing through the cell when their brother was dragged out. Then Ridge way was released and aroused several of neighbors, but no pursuit was made, as it was feared the mob would use their pistols to re pel an attack. The mob's first halt after the ir start from the jail was at an elm tree near the home ot colored, but some one was approachmg and they moved 011. An attempt was made to throw a rope over a limb of a tree.

Capt. Henry irilfith of a lumber schooner was in tin Police Court yesterday charged with assaulting 11. Clay Jones. The alleged assault occurred in Johnson store, at the foot of 12th street. Monday afternoon.

Jones, it is charged, was under the influence of liquor and started a quarrel with, the captain, who is 1111 elderly man. and struck him 011 the arm with an axe handle, when the latter struck Jones oil the nose with a shovel. Last evening a committee of the Brooklyn veteran volunteer firemen's association arrived here and presented to the Washington veterans an elegantly framed set of resolutions of thanks for the courtesies shown the Brooklyn men on the occasion of their brief visit here on September 11th last. It wus the regular meeting night of the Washington association, and while they were in session at Meyer's hall a committee composed of Messrs. James Ragan. Wm. Cammack and John W.

Thompson received tho visitors at the Baltimore and Potomac depot and escorted them to the halL The visitors were Messrs. John H. Bergen, Wm. Frecl, Stephen llickev. B.

P. Carr. Edward 8torer, Wm. Youug. Theo.

B. Collyer, A. J. Michaels and Jerry Chadwick. On entering the room Mr.

John W. Thompson welcomed them in a neat speeeh. saving the recollection of duties performed and dengert encountered bound tho veterans in ties which wo aid never be broken. Mr. A.

J. Michaels responded in happy terms and expressed the hope that the Washington association would give the Brooklyn veterans an opportunity to reciprocate their openhanded generosity. THE PRESENTATION. Then a recess was taken and after introductions the memento brought by the Brooklyuiteg was brought in and formally presented. Mr.

Storer making the address and Mr. Thompson responding. The memento is an elegantly engrossed copy in pen work of resolutions expressing ttianks to the Washington association and the hope to take them in individually or collectively and show them the city of churches. The subject of celebrating Washington's birthday on February 22 next was considered, and a committee composed of Joseph Kagan, George Keithley, William Cammack, Julius Strobel and J. J. Peabodv was appointed to report on the subject at tho next meeting. Mr.

lagan reported that through Assistant Chief Lowe, Mr. Collins of Clapp A Jones, Hudson. N.Y.. had presented the association with two hose pipes. A vottt of thanks was passed.

An entertainment in honor of the members of the Supreme council of the Royal Arcanum, now visiting this city, was given last evening at Masonic temple under the auspices of the live local councils.
