Thursday night an old colored man named Henry Lively was taken sick on the Benninesbridge road and was removed to ttie Washington asylum, where he died yesterday. The wagon of the Maryland Grange butter company last evening ran over Jas. Thompson, a colored boy, on 17th street between and streets, and broke hie leg. He was taken to the Children's hospital. Mr.

John M. Brown, a well-known produce dealer, died yesterday morning at his residence. No. 1535 Marion street, after an illness of four days. Mr.

Brown was about thirty-eight years of age and leaves a wife and two children. Republican Meeting at Takoma Park. Birch's hall at Takoma Park was crowded last night by an enthusiastic crowd of republicans. Donch's bund was on hand to furnish music. B.

H. Warner presided. Arthur Stabler of Sandy Springs attacked Baughman's record and dwelt upon the advantages of Montgomery county and the era of prosperity it was entering upon. He predicted the utter downfall of democracy in Montgomery county. Speeches were also made by H.

A large inciting of Christian workers was' held last evening in the Church of the Cove- nant. Representatives were present from nearly all the Christian endeavor societies. First Lieut Oscar F. Long, fifth infantry, will arrive in the city in about a week and will then assume his new duties as adjutant general of the District militia. He was rather unprepared when the order assigning him to this duty appeared, and though he received warning by telegraph the day before the distances are such between here aid Texas, where he is stationed, that he could not possibly get here before. Lieut. Long has a rosy complexion and is inclined to be a blonde.

He is tall and rather slcudor, with a martial bearing ud a keen, observant manner. W'8 duty I-IEUT. LONG. OH the Staff of Gen. Miles in the west have given him an unusually pleasant mnnner as well as a thorough acquaintance with the business side of a soldier's life.

He entered the military academy July 1, 1872. from New York, graduating four years later, in the centennial class of '76. when he was given the rank of second lieutenant and assigned to the fifth infantry. On the 21st of Octobcr, 1H81. he received the grade of first lieutenant.

Hib staff duty took him away from his regiment, but when he returned to it. being relieved from Gen. Miles' staff by operation of Secretary Lndicott's "four years tourof-duty" order," he was made adjutant of the regiment. He relinquishes this post, which gives him the relative rank and the pay of a captain, to come here. Among his influential friends arc many men high in the ranks of the state.

ROCKV1LLE. A Business Notes. Correspondence of The Evening Star. Rockville, November Quite an excitement was created today by the announcement that S. D.

Higgins A Son had made tin assignment for the benefit of their creditors and that their store was closcd and in the hands of W. W. Welsh as receiver. The liabilities cannot yet be ascertained, but they are supposed to be between and $18,000, with assets that will pay to creditors fully 75 per cent and perhaps 100 per cent. The finishing touches are being put on the new residence of Commander A.

G. Kellogg, U.S.N., at the west end of town. It will cost $5,500. Mr. R.

Stopes, cashier of the bank at this place, is also about completing, in the same section of town, a handsome residence, at a cost of large new building receutlv finished for Mr. John Kingdon of the Treasury department by the same contractor is situated on an eminence at the eastern end of town and cost Mr. A. J.

Almoney has finished a fine residence of two stories and attic, at a cost of Edwin Smith has commenced the building of a dwelling house in the west end of town which will be two and a half stories high and contain twelve rooms and cost $4,700. Mr. E. M. West has in course of erection a dwelling house two and a half stories high, with ten rooms, at a cost of Miss lilanche Braddock's pretty cottage at the eastern end of town is completed.

A two-story frame dwelling house near the fair grounds for Mr. Jos. N. Bailey is nearly finished. The third story is being erected on the large brick dwelling and store house of Judge W.

Viers Bouic on Montgomery avenue. Mr. D. H. Warfield is putting up "a handsome dwelling house at the eastern end of town and Mr.

William Richards has built large store and two dwelling houses. Mrs. J. J. Wiggins is building a large residence in the southwest part of town.

Mrs. Sarah Lyddon has recently completed a large store and dwelling. Thos. C. Grounds has recently completed for himself a very handsome residence in the vicinity of the court house.

Dorsey W. Offutt has commenced the building of a residence on an elevation near the fair grounds. Mr. Jacob I'ass has recently completed a large two-story building, which will be used as a carriage bazar. During the present season twenty-four new buildings have been erected at this place, which certainly places Rockville in the front rank among western Maryland towns in tho march of improvement.

8.A.M. The Thanksgiving Proclamation. President Harrison yesterday issued his first thanksgiving proclamation. It says: A highly favored people, mindful of their dependence on the bounty of Divine Providence, should seek fitting occasion to testify gratitude and ascribe praise to him who is author of their many blessings. It behooves then to look back with thankful hearts over the past year and bless God tor his infinite mercy in vouchsafing to our land enduring peace, to our people freedom from pestilence and famine, to our husbaudmen abundant harvests, and to them that labor a recompense of their toil.

Now. therefore. I. Benjamin Harrison. Presi- dent of the United of America, do earnestly recommend that Thursday, the day of this present month of November.
