Timothy O. Flowe, at the residence of his nephew, Mr. J. H. Howard, Kenosha, was received yesterday afternoon by CoL Enoch Totten, his son-inlaw.

The Intelligence was not unexpected. On Friday the news came that the Postmaster General was very 111, and his daughter, Mrs. Totten, lert at once for his bedside. He had contracted a severe cold at Green Bay a week ago, and when he returned to Kenosha he was very ill, the doctors pronouncing his llluesss an attack of pneumonia. On 8 lturday Mr.j.

Totten telegraphed that her father's condition whs serious, and Mr. Frank Howe, his son, wps preparing to leave for the west when the telerrom announcing the death was received here. Mr. Howe and Col. Totten left last night.

The fact of the death of the Postmaster General soon became known In the city last evening, and general regret was expressed. Great surprise was felt, as his sickness was known to only a few of his friends. To-day the post office department will be In and arrangements will be made to have representatives of the government attend the funeral. Mr. Howe was born at Llvermore, Maine, on the 24th of February, 1S10.

After a common school education he studied law, and was admitted to practice In 1839. He was elected to the legislature in 1815, and served with Wm. Pitt Fessenden. Later in the same year he removed to Green Bay, where he opened a law ofllce. He took an active Interest In politics, a was the whig indicate for Congress In 1848.

In 1S50 lie was elected a Judge of the circuit and supreme courts o( the state, and resigned In 1855. Two years later he was a candidate for the United States Senate, but failed of election. He was, however, elected In 1861, and was twice re-elected, serving a continuous term of eighteen years In the Senate. He was In politics a positive republican, and during the war advocated vigorous measures, and was active in securing the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson. He was always prominent as a debater, and his speeches on all subjects were noted for their elaborate and exhaustive character.

On the death of Mr. Salmon P. Chase, President Grant him th" position of Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Rather than have a democrat elected in ills place In the Senate, he declined the position, and In speaKlng of it afterwards said: "I have trampled on the only real ambition I ever had." Judge Lawrenson, who has sworn In all the Postmaster Generals for a number of years past, told a Star reporter this morning that Aaron V. Brown or Tennessee, who died March 8th, 1859, was the only Postmaster General who died in omen Mr.

Howe, on the 3d of March, of the same year, John Mauron, the Third Assistant Postmaster General, died. government officials going to the fcneral. The party that will go from here to attend thn funeral will leave this evening, and will consist of Secretaries Teller and Lincoln, and po-slblv Sectary Chandler and Mr. Phillips, the President's private secretary. From the Post Office department, the first assistant, Mr.

Hatton, will go, and Judge Freeman, the assistant attorney general, and Mr. Jameson, of the railway mall service. Mr. Hatton has invited Senator Hill, the chairman of the Senate office committee, and Representative Bingham, the chairman of the House committee on post offices, to attend the funeral. The superintendent of the railway mall service, Mr.

Thompson, will join the party en route. Since May four hea ls or of the department have died. They are Mr. Dennlson, of Ohio; Mr. Maynard, of Mr.

Jewell, of and the late Mr. Howe. Mr. HattOn received a dispatch this morning from Mr. J.

H. Howe, the deceased Postmaster General's nephew, that the funeral would take plage at Kenosha, on Wednesday at three o'clock. INTERMENT AT GREEN BAT.
