I EIGHTEEN Police Radio Station Planned For Wood River Area 2- Way WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30,1952 ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH Proposed Plan Would Give Round The Clock Service To 3 Cities System Needed In Case of An Area Disaster Calls Could Be Handled More Efficiently In Community WOOD RIVER. Plans are underway to Install a centrally-lorated 2-wny radio station, giving 21-hour service for police cars and stations at Wood River. Rosann and Hartford. Beaumont Parks, director of civil defense for the Wood River area and chairman of the police-radio committee of the Wood River Township Chamber of Commerce, conferred Monday evening with mayors, police chiefs, and officers of the three communities. Also attending the meeting was representative of A radio firm and Russell Bell, executive secretary of the Chamber.

Presently, the three communilies are serviced by the Alton staLion transmitter. East. Alton has not joined with the other communites because It has a commitment on a radio rental for six months. The Installation of a transmitter is being pushed in this because the communities feel that it is needed for more efficient handling of calls and to take care of any disaster in A local industrial plant. Wood River pays $20 a for the Alton service.

Although the arrangement with the Alton transmitter has been fairly successful, one police chief pointed out, "They've got their hands full in Alton." In order to reach police in their patrol car, someone at the station now has to phone Alton and request that the message be biondcast. It Is felt that such calls are not carried out to efficiency since there is no arrangement to signal in and out. The group who met Monday plan to meet again as soon as Parks' committee makes a study of the costs and can devise a program for financing the project. The proposed system would re- quire the installation of the transmitter at the central station as well as the installation of new radios in all police cars participating. The central station probably would be located at Wood River.

It was agreed Monday that each city should provide for the police radio changeover and go tocar gether on financing the central station. The problem Is in financ24-hour service which would ing'a the hiring of extra men to require receive and dispatch the calls. It has been recommended that the proposed system for this area be on that will tie in with the frequency which is used by state lice and other communities in the St. Louis area as Belleville and East St. Louis.

Bell said that the station would tie In with the civilian defense proof this area and be a boon in gram of any emergency at a local case He said that the mayors who plant. met Monday are "quite pleased with the Idea of getting a central station in Wood River." Attending the meeting were Mayor William Stoneham of Wood River; Mayor' Charles Welch of Roxana; Mayor Joe E. Stump of Hartford: Police Chief Hesse Perof Wood River; Chief Roscoe Duncan of Roxana; Chief Milford H. Jacoby of Hartford; Capt. Frank Sweet of Wood River, and Patrolman Hines of Hartford.
