WORK NAVY SCORES EARLY ON MKttlf AOA1NBT CRIMSON Cambridge Men Later Oa Achieves Tlo by Nounes Hard Man Pollpnln a Parable Altboagh Outplayed tbo MliKilci harvard Keep Trick Dark AMHAtot1l Oct 4The Naval Academy and Harvard football teams clashed here today and each side made six points the Midshipmen touchdown and a goal In the first half and the Crimson touchdown andA goat In the second half The final result was a tie but the Navy outplayed the big Cambridge eleven somewhat the contest considered In IU entirety The Midshipmen did not gain quite IS much ground by ruifhlng as their opponents but nearly as much and they kept the ball Harvards territory a greater part of the time and gained on the punting exchanges Their all around game showed more variety A drlnle felllit Interval but caroely hard enough wet the ball and not enough to handicap either side In running or handling i the pigskin The Navys uchdown was due to a forward pass cleanly executed i whloh caught the Harvard players off their guard Harvards touchdown was due to a sixty aro run by Nourse th centre The run was made from a scrimmage A Navy back plunged Into the lino with I tho ball there was a swirl of men and then out shot Nourep with the ball he either nipping It away from the Navy man or snatching In a momentary fumble The playwas so sudden that ho had a clear field In no time and could not be overtaken That play saved Harvard from being beaten brat no other time did Harvard get uncomfortably near the Annapolis goal linen was a hard fought tame very minute and In the hands of a quartette of competent officials moved along briskly The Navy team at this period at any rate Is one of the strongest In the country and WAIl better prepared for the battle than was Harvard The Crimsons repertoire of plays was very limited and Harvard wasnt taking any chances of future opponents discovering anything to be made use of later In the matter of natural material the Harvard men were a fine looking lot as they ran on the field tall active and rangy In Dalton a newcomer to the squad the Navy uncovered a player who promises to be one of the finest punters In the land He Is a powerful kicker and got more drive on tbo ball than did Capt Durr Harvards star Howaa a bit slow getting HUT punts off however and two of them were blocked by the harvard forwards The game showed that Harvard Is no further along in her development than two or three other big teams not so much so as the Navy team but that the Crimson has the mentor formidable combination A prominent fault today was the poor work by the back Held tn catching punts and loose and uncertain open field tackling The Navys tackling was better than liar vards and lange caught kicks much better than either Cutler or Corbett of Harvard Cutler fumbled badly and missed many opportunities to run back kicks Little Lange did some snaky dodging and has It onany quarterback In the Jslt In thjit regard except Dillon of PrlnctffoiT There Will keen battling between the two forward lines with the Navy quicker to get the charge Nevertheless they found Harvards line from tackle to tackle hard to penetrate for prolonged gains Harvard was up against the same obstacle In the Navy line Capt Northcroft of the Navy played a splendid game and made his presence felt in all the plays Tbe Navy ends were a clever pair outplaytog their opposite particularly Crowley who often overran or missed his man Gray Leslie White Corbett and Ksnnard formed a group of backs who did rood Individual work hitting the line with speed and rigor but not gaining as much as they would hove if their interference had not been smashed so regularly by the oppo cltlon Richardson at fullback for the Navy did well too It is doubtful whether any team In the ountry could have beaten the Navy today and there Is no particular reason for Harvard to feel downcast In fact tie Midshipmen expected to win and the outcome of the game disappointment to them especially aa they had the arne well In hand at one time Harvard had the kickoff and Dalton immediately returned Burrs kick The Annapolis end smeared Cutler In a jiffy when the lattur caught Daltons return kick In mldfleld Burr punted back alter one Ineffectual rush by Harvard Dalton tried to punt but Fish blocked tbe ball The midshipmen were better at falling on the ball than Harvard and recovered the lather for a first down Jones nude even yards on a fake kick and then Dalton drove hurricane punt ov Cutlers head to Harvards 10 yard line Corbel skimmed left end for six yards then came a punt which Lange ran back to Harvards 40 yard line A forward pass Lange to Itelfsaydsr gained fifteen yards for the Navy and after the ball had been worked rive yards further Lange sent a forward pass sailing over Harvards end Itelfsnyder caught there was nobody near him and he raced over the goal line for a touchdown North croft kicked the goal Harvard kicked off again not from the centre but from the Navys 40 yard line tbe reason for this was that there were a couple of Navy attendants on the field when the ball was about to be put in play and the Navy waapenalUed niteen yards lurr blocked one of Daltons punts soon afterward but Lange recovered the ball Dalton punted out of bounds at the Navys 4 9 yard line and after an onslde kick which petted five yards for Harvard the Crimson hit up a rushing streak which promised to carry the ball over the line From the tandem formation Corbett dray and White drove In for profitable advances Harvard progressed as far as the Navy Iii yard mark when the midshipmen rallied and threw her back Harvard tried to go over the Navy by mean of an onslde kick but Jones nailed the oval for the mldshlomen Just before tbe half ended Northeroft reeled off eight yards on a cross tackle play A first down resulted from the next assault and time was called Lange kicked off to Browne In the second half Browne came back 10 yards and Kennard added six more The next rush was stopped dead and a punt was collared by Lange on the Navy a 35 yard line Lange circled left end for eight yard on a quarter back run and Itlohardionnushed through tackle for a first down That Is It would have been a first dowp If Nourse by some mysterious process had not pinched the ball and shot out from the mass before anybody knew he had the leather lie ran straight down the field over the line for a touch down Burr kicked goal Kennnrd rushed the Navy kick off back 20 yard Several kicks followed to be followed In turn by a smart 20 yard end run by tralnel neat play by liurr and Browns gained a yards for Harvard Bur stood close to the line and made a Bluff to moke an onsld kick Instead be passed the ball to Brovne who skipped around the end The next time Harvard tried this play the Navy spilled It Browne being yanked down for a iota The Navy had a close call when Sllngluff made a high pass to Dalton Dalton recovered the ball but was thrown for aiD yard loss lie ben sent a beautiful punt Wa yam line For a while Harvard had the mldahlpm on ede fennlve but the tide of battle turned when Cutlermuffed punt on Harvard 4J yard line and a Navy man fell qn It Itelfsnyder made five yards on a forward pass but was tackled so strenuously by JlarwbufWOI dropped the oval Again the Navy was spryer at reooverinij a loose ball and made five additional yards by falling on the ball after It had rolled that distance Lange tore off six yards on a fake kick and Northcrott piled through a Me gap between crortdP Dunlsn for alx Th midshipman had
