Daniel Webster expressed the geucral sentiment of American Scholars, when he said: I possess many Pic-tionarits, and, cf most of. the cultivated languages, ancient nnd modern; but I never Joel that I am entirely armed and in this respect, without Dr. Webster, at command. And Itafus Choate says: I beg lo adopt, in its utmost strength aud extent, the testimonial of Dutiicl Webster. It is a consideration, of which every American may be proad, that such, ft National work, as Wtlmtert Unubridgid Dictionary, has been wrought out by an American Scholar.

It is proud monument of American attainme.it. It is no less gratifying, that it is so gcnernlly ado p'et! so general, that the fuct becomes a settled oue, that it the great standard of the lnngnugC in this country. This is soon in its adoption by, we believe, nearly all our literary institutions, at any rato thoe of the highest standing. Iiy its adoption in the common schools, under slate management in some 23 states of the Union, including the Canada. The highest compliments, too have been puitl to this work by somo of tho more distinguished nnivcrshic8 of Europe.

These facts, showing us they do, that we have so able and unrivaled a work, that that work is evidently Auicricaa in its authorship and its Idiom, and especially that it is the admitted aud uniform standard of the country, are facts that not only appeal to onr pride, bat to tho sanctions of our judgment, and 'give stability aud character to the lan guage. It is the design of those who now control the copyright, to make it peculiarly and exclu-8iie1yK(Ae Dictionary of the English langnage, It has sometimes been ussailei ou account of tho orthography, but iu this it more nearly conforms to tho general usage of tho country than any other. And it must bo remembered that the great merit of a dictionary consists in Its presenting the entire vocabulary of the with the derivation, pronunciation and definition of tho words. Such is tho admitted saperiorlty of Webster's over all others in these particulars, that its possession becomes a necewity. Tho publishers, Messrs.

G. C. Merkiam, of Springfield, have the disposition and the means to carry ont the views of the great philologist, whose work will undoubtedly remain as his monument, while the. languago itself endure. Webster, is our couttjnt companion, and haud-'oook, aud its presence is invaluable.

Though othen may bo consulted, yet it Is to this that wo come at last, and defer to as the acknowledged authority. Disputations There is a class of people in this world, to whom much is due for keeping tbe faculties of the rest of the world in exercise, nnd -thereby imparting to them health, strength, and readiness for usefulness.

We the disputers and Tbey are usually ambitious, and talk for victory. Each assertion is followed by on earnest scrutiny of of tho by-standers for a demonstration of applause or approbation, and usually the Initiative is thrown in. Theso people always deal in 'contradictions. They will contradict your first word, without waiting to get the Scope of yoar meaning. They appear to think that uotbing is doing unless an argumont Is going on.

Though they are not always of the most amiable turn of mind, they nevertheless subserve their end, and do much, sometimes, to brightea the faculties ef the more amiable, intelligent and peaceful.
