We learn from the Jackson Whig that "on Thursday night of last week two horses were stolen from, oitizens living ia the Nerth-western portion of Madison county. On the following morning pursuit was made, and the thieves, with the horses in their possession, were overtaken near Dyersburg and brought back to the neighborhood where the theft was perpetrated, on Sunday night last, and delivered over to Esquire Lawrence to await tcjal.

A short time before daylight tbs next morning, a party of disguised men rode up to the house where the prisoners were, took them from the guard, and, it is supposed, killed tbem Bhortly afterwards, as their dead bodies, riddled with bulletts, were found lying across the road, a short distance from the place, soon after daylight. The names of the two men thus summarily dealt with are John Fox and Sam Tsylor. Fox was recognized as the same person who passed counterfeit money on Maj. E. B.

Mason and other citizens of this county about one year ago. He then claimed Middle Tennessee for his home. Shortly after his first visit to this county it was ascertained that Gov. Brownlow had offered reward for his arrest, on the charge of murder, He is supposed to have belonged to the band of horse-thieves and desperate characters that have been operating for some time past between Memphis and Johnsonville. Taylor is a mere youth, not over eighteen; and was, doubtless, led off by Fox, who is over thirty years of age." There was a meeting of citizens in the Courthouse at Jackson yesterday.

New Memphis. The rain last evening kept large number from the theater who otherwise would have been there to wit ness the daring feats of Miss Leo Hudson on her spirited mare, bonnie Black Bess. Nevertheless the house was well filled with fashionable folk, and the dress-circle presented quite a fascinating array of beauty. The play of Mazeppa was placed on the stage in admirable style, its appointments, scenery, music and mechanical arrangements being perfect. About three thousand feet of planking have been used in forming the dizzy ascent up which Black Bess bounded with foaming fury, bearing Miss Hudson on her back.

The scene is one of wild and terrific grandeur, startling and astonishing every beholder. Miss Hudson ia not only fearless equestrian, but a very pleasing actress, and was deservedly applauded for her graceful rendition of many ef the author's Mr. Murry as Abner Khan," Mr. Dalton as "Thamar," Mr. Malmburg as "Primis-tans," Mr.

MoWade as "Drolniake," Mrs. Lanagan as "Olinska," and Mrs. Cline as "Zembler," contributed greatly toward making the piece a great success aod evoking that hearty applause which expresses the pleasure of an audience-Mazeppa will be repeated to-night Mt. The South Memphis School Bell of Honor for January Thomas J. Hunt, Walte Roach, Edward Charles Hunt Leon Hunt, Edward Mitchel, W. Grebao. Thb Vallby Baileoad. The editor of the Lexington (Miss.) Advertiser understands the value of railroads.

Speaking of the proposed Valley Railroad, be says: We wonld auezest that a meeting of the friends of this enterprise be held in Lexingtoo, on tuoh a day as may be thought advisable, to take active and effective steps in this matter. It should be done before Colonel Trezevant with the engineer corns arrives, aad substantial aid proffered, in order that he and other friends may be impressed with the earnestness Of our intentions, and that their exertions in our behalf mar be encouraged and increased. Let the contributions be worthy of onr enter prising citizens. Mr. Hooker tells you bow yon will get your money back by the appreciation of real estate, and other property.

To Lexington, as indeed to all the country through which it would pass, this road would be of incalculable benefit Our population would soon increase one hundred per centum. An increase of population gives a proportionate increase of business of every kind. This it a sell-evident proposition, and should induce our business men here to contribnte most liberally toward the construction of the road. Though it may subject them to a temporary inconvenience, yet they would be more than compensated in a few years by the invaluable facilities this road wsuld afford for the accumulation of wealth. It is a felt necessity with us that, in order to prosper as we wonld wish to do, we must become to a certain extent, as it were, a trafficking people.

To traffic we most have facilities of egress and ingress. The building of this road will afford them. Build it and every product of our country (and, had we the necessary facilities of communication, they would become more multifold) would find a ready market in Memphis and other cities. And, as Mr. Hooker suggests, we can safely caloulate en assistance from St.

Louis and Memphis. Last week we paid a flying visit to Memphis, and while there conversed with several prominent capitalists upon the subject of this road. The whole city is alive to its importance, and from what we ascertained would contribute at least $400,000 toward its construction. Let us then Mt together, and take enective steps in the premises. We can and mast have this road.

It will infuse a new life current into every veia and artery of the country through which it would pass. Onr atoek of alike, aatlns, dreaa wear and eloaka at actual coat. A. SEE8SETe SON, 129-131 a Main atreet. Nuisances.
