The Dodgers' Ramon Martinez, who struck out 18 batters on June 4 to tie Sandy Koufax's team record, was selected NL Pitcher of the Month. Sandberg's 14 homers were one short of a record for the month. Sandberg also led the league in runs (32), slugging percentage hits (43) and total bases (90), for the month. Martinez was 4-0 in June, with a 1.76 ERA over six starts. He struck out 56 batters in 46 innings and pitched three complete games, all best in the NL for the month.

Cincinnati Reds infielder Mariano Duncan suffered a minor injury to his neck Wednesday when his taxi was involved in a rear-end collision in Montreal. Duncan, who was headed to Olympic Stadium when the accident occurred, was taken to Montreal General Hospital where x-rays of his neck were negative. Duncan is hitting .308 with six homers and 21 RBIs this season. Larry Cochell of Cal State-Fullerton has been named the new head baseball coach at the University of Oklahoma. Cochell, 50, is the seventh baseball coach at Oklahoma.

He said his priorities as the Sooners' coach are to win the Big Eight Conference title, then the NCAA regional title and the national championship. He said he had no timetable for reaching the goals. Cochell is one of only four coaches to take teams from two schools to the NCAA College World Series. His teams from Cal State- Fullerton and Oral Roberts University have made the trip. Oral Roberts finished fifth in the College World Series in 1978, while Cochell's Cal State- Fullerton team placed second in 1988 and made a brief appearance at the CWS this year.
