44 ASIURr PARK EVENING PRESS, Nov. 18, 1971 Chris Hill Maintaining SKIIG Su1HRTs Family's Tics Cross-Country Trails Getting Busier Neptune, CBA Capers Seeded Tops Neptune and Christian Brothers Academy were seeded first and second for the 16th annual Christmas Basketball Jubilee, the oldest and strongest such classic in the area. The recent committee meeting held at Neptune High School also decided to expand the classic to include freshman and jayvee tournaments for the first time. The jayvee tourney will be staged at Toms River South while the freshman tournament will be held at Neptune Junior High School. Walt Mischler, athletic director of Neptune High School, will again be the iournament director.

Again the classic for varsity teams will be conducted at Monmouth College. use bamboo (there they cost 75 cents) and have curved tips so they can be pulled easily out of icy snow Clothing, according to the general, should he light in weight. Beyond that, he told club members, "Most of you could ski in just what you have on here in temperatures down to 15 degrees if you have the right shirt, the right sweater, and the right socks." One difference is in crosscountry mittens. Leather is avoided in favor of a lightweight nylon that's fine as long as it doesn't get wet. But in cross-country, there's less chance you're going to be falling than in downhill.

In Norway, crosscountry skiers also carry a pack with 'SHOOS pUR s'lWIIIlU jacket to put on when you (cross-country generates a lot of heat, but as soon as you stop you can chill quickly), and the rainbow of waxes that are the secret of success to the sport. As Gen. Swenson pointed out: "You can ski all your life on downhill skis and never wax them. You can ski all in rugged mountains, "You have to be a better skier than in downhill." He showed the longer, narrower, much lighter, (Pa-pound) wooden cross-country ski (the Norwegians use hickory or hickory and ash with a hardwood edge like walnut), and the Kandahar bindings that some of us recall as the dreaded "bear traps." "I learned to ski on these (bindings)," the general said. "And as a result, I ski very carefully." And he mentioned another advantage, "It's a very good way to lose weight." Cross-country is basically walking, with a sliding gait that lets you ride one ski.

So the release factor so vital to downhill bindings is not important. The toe of the very soft, light ski shoe has to be anchored to the ski, but the heel has to be left free to rise and fall. In fact, the crosscountry binding we've seen locally has only a toe piece, dispensing even with the cable heel. Cross-country poles are longer the Norwegians still NEW BRUNSWICK Grandson of the late Frank Hill, Rutgers basketball coach for 27 years from 1916 to 1943; son of Maurice Hill, a Scarlet basketball performer and a 1943 graduate; and brother of "Mo" Hill, a Rutgers football guard and 1969 grad, Chris Hill, obviously, is Rutgers-born and bred. It seems totally proper that the 6-1 senior was chosen as one of the tri-captains for the 1971-72 bastekball season along with Steve Kaplan and Tom Roth.

It was not nepotism. The 21-year-old Toms River resident has been a poised backcourt performer for two seasons and has appeared in a reserve role in most of games since his freshman year. As a freshman, the Christian Brothers Academy alumnus was the top Scarlet scorer with a 16.3 average, establishing himself as a heady and steady ball-player. His reputation as sound performer on both offense and defense remains unquestioned. Chris, however, has been disappointed with his two varsity seasons.

His high game as a sophomore came against Army (11) and last year he tallied 10 against Gettysburg. But the mathematics major would like to add a stronger contribution. "I'd like to overcome my disappointments by making this my best year." he says, "and help make this Rutgers' best season ever." The 11 inductees were all given plaques and made acceptance speeches. As recently as five years ago, skiers like Adolph Mar-gtis of Middletown were stray voices in the wilderness proclaiming the pleasures of cross-country skiing. During the past couple of seasons, there been a new surge of interest, and this season it looks as though cross-country skiing is really going to take off.

A good indication is that Mt. Snow is going to offer a NASTAR program in crosscountry. Among the advantages of cross-country are a chance to get back to what skiing used to be all about going your own way through beautiful countryside In peace and quiet. Families have discovered it's a great way to take the smaller children skiing at their own levels of ability and still have fun as a family. And not the least of its advantages is, it's inexpensive.

Bindings, for instance, are available for about $5. One area ski shop that stocks cross-countrv, can provide all the enuirjment skis, doois, poles, and bindings for about $R0 total And there are no lift fees. All the advantages and more importantly, a chance to see cross-country skiing in Norway where it's native, were spread out before the Schussboomers on Tuesday, at Hi-Henry Inn. Brig. Gen.

Richard W. Swenson, deputy commanding general of the Electronics Command, who was stationed in Norway for about two years, gave the Ft. Monmouth ski club a personal rundown on cross-country techniques and his experiences. And he showed films taken during a five-day unified American, British, and Norwegian military operation on skis. One thing Gen.

Swenson pointed out is that for major cross-country skiing, such as Penn State's Lydell Mitchell left Marinaro behind in the scoring race. His four touchdowns last Saturday gave him a season record of 25 and boosted his average to 16.4 points per game compared with 14.5 for Marinaro. your life on cross country skis iind never wax them but you won't go anywhere." Waxes are for gripping, rather than helping thp ski slide over the snow. And with the proper one on your ski bottoms, you can climb a steep slope. They're color coded, starting with blue for colder temperatures, and shading into warmer colors for rising temperatures.

You also need a torch to soften the waxes for application. It sounds complicated. It's not once you get the hang of it or Oslo wouldn't need the 75 miles of lighted cross country ski trails that ring it. As the general's films showed, Norwegians turn out on Sunday to walk on skis the way Americans turn out to parks anil beaches. He even suggested that the joint military exercises were prompted in part because the Norwegians like to ski.

Now that he's back in the U.S., Gen. Swenson keeps up with both forms of skiing accompanying his children on downhill runs and planning a cross country jaunt near A78-13 (600x13) PRICE PLUS 3.20 F.F. It's a role the former scholastic baseball standout is well qualified to play. A capable outside shooter and a strong driver as well as a polished defensive performer, Hill is battling furiously with three others for starting position in the backcourt. Just which player Coach Dick Lloyd will select to team with John Somogyi is uncertain. But whether it is as a member of the starting five or by coming off the bench, Chris is expected to make a considerable contribution to what many think will be the Scarlet's best all-time team. No.
