Wim-utt, Scc'y. LOCAL EW8 Are 'Ou an '-engine house man?" Cattle shipping is quite lively this season. Changeable weather is in order at this season of the vear. J. D.

Rapp returned from several months absence in Illinois. Wild game is abundant, and geese and ducks afford sportsmen fine fun. Fred 'fainter has returned from a visit to his old home in Connecticut. Miss 3Iella Cainahan has returned after an absence of five months at her former home in Illinois. Workingmen should not forget that Democratic war on the tariff means attacking the of labor.

A fine young lady arrived at L. E. Deger's residence Wednesday. The father is as happy as a big sunflower. C.

31. Barker and I. N. Elliott have returned from a visit to Utah and Colorado. They enjoyed the trip hugely.

The "Engine house" Republicans and the House" Republicans denominate the political factions in Citv. A. Evarts, who has been employed on the railroad in the west part of the state, has returned to his old home in this county and will remain a short time. J). L.

Free bridge is the talk now. The owners of the bridge will sell at a rea-ponable price. We hope that the bridge question will be settled by the establishment of a nee bridge, and the matter abridged. Mendenhall Son have taken charge of the Opera House Restaurant, and will conduct this popular place in fu ture Ihey are accommodating gentlemen and serve their patrons well. Hot and cold baths furnished.

An itinerant looking man with very small mules was selling applts and things here Wednesday. They came from Wichita Falls. The apples retailed at four bits a dozen, and were quickly taken. Mobectie Panhandle. The gang was fired out of the Republican convention and on their wav down to the Opera House they met a Democratic body wandering along the street without a head.

They clapped a Republican head on it and it still goes marcliiirg on. While the Republican delegates to the county convention elected at the Engine house in this city, Oct. 4th, feel that they ought to have been admitted to seats in the convention, tnev yet heartily endorse the nominees of the convention and will give the ticket their cordial support. Henry Dempsy, the man who was charged with killing his wife at Cool-edge, had a preliminary examination and the jury brought in a verdict that the deceased met her death br the hands of an unknown person. Dempsy was drunk at the time of the killing, and the shooting may have been accidental.

The woman had lately given birth to a child. The Pawnee county Republican convention met in Larned. Oct 4th, and nominated the following ticket: Representative, W. C. Edwards; superintendent of public instruction, H.

A. Smith; county attorney, J. 31. Van-Winkle; clerk of the district court. D.

The committee have declared the arbitration of the vexed Senatorial candidacy and so Frost and Itush continue to be candidates. The decision will be made at the polls. Hush has the lead decidedly.

The committee on credentials in the Republican county convention, promptly and unceremoniously rejected the prosy offered by D. 31. Frost, candidate for State Senator. Frost presented himself as in prosy from Howell precinct. It appeared that no election of delegates took place in Howell precinct, and that Frost had no credentials for the place he desired to usurp.

This action by Frost is unprincipled, and stamps the man as the cheekiest individual in the country. A candidate for office should not stoop to such low practices. Remarkable "Weather. The sudden change of the atmosphere I Tuesday morning recalls the fact that we have enjoyed a remarkable season. The Leavenworth Times says of the weather just past: The present weather is like a section of dog days transferred to the middle of autumn.

It has been extremely hot at the east for the past few days, the thermometer reaching 90 degrees in some portions of the country. season is remarkable. There has been no frost to kill garden vines, and green corn, cucumbers and melons are still in the market. In Chicago, Wednesday, there were large receipts of bluebenies, a July fruit seldom lasting beyond the latter part of August. Thos now in market are said to be as fine a-; any part of the crop has been.

Those who buy stoves and fuel and winter goods do not complain of the unseasonable appearance of summer skies and airs so far after the autumnal equinox, but those who have these commodities to sell would rather see a spell of December than of June weather at the present time. Exodus lo Kansas-People are settling in Kansa3 and this section is receiving a large share of the immigration. The Chicago Inter-Ocean correspondent at Hillsboro, 111., says: partial failure of crops in this fection for three or four consecutive years has greatly discouraged farmers and business men of small capital, and it is reported that a western exodus audi as this part o'f the state has never seen, will occur soon the outlook should become more encouraging. A large number of the leading farmers of this county are now in the west prospecting, and many of them will locate there. An excursion train to Kansas yesterday took a large number of additional western home seekers." The same is true in other sections of the country east of us, and it may be expected that the immigration to Kansas will be large.

The time was when Kansas was to be a drouthy state, but that day is passed, and her reputation for sure crops i3 becoming widely known. The next year promises to be one of unparallcllcd prosperity for Kansas. Her absolute supremacy as an agricultural state is becoming known all over the Union. The grasshoppers and drouth are only known as things of the past. The absolute certainty of good crops which the past five years experience has proved indisputable, the abundance of pure water, healthful climate, good schools, intelligent people and cheap land, cannot fail to attract the most enterprising men from the older states.

To most persons vho are willing to help build up a counnry, southwestern Kansas is the place. Land is cheap and a good home can be made pay for itself in a few years. Land that costs from five to ten dollars an acre iill raise from twenty to thirty bushels of wheat, and from fortr lo fifty bushels of corn to the acre, and there is plenty of just such land can be bought in Harper county now. There will never be a better opportunity for enterprising men to secure farms. SIGHTS ON THE SAWDUST.

W. W. Cole's colossal shows which will exhibit here on 3Ionday, Oct. 13, contains all the novelties known to the circus world. The menagerie and ring departments have been enlarged since last season, and now are the completest ever giveu to the public.

No show in the country cau surpass Cole's in the extent and variety of its features, and certainly there is no manager who has so uniformly and unvaryingly satisfied his numerous patrons. It ij imposible to enumerate all the special attractions of this mem moth show. There are over sixty diifereut acts to be seen in its three rings and on the elevated stage. These acts embrace, besides the ordinary circus performances of riding, tumbling, leaping, such new and astonishing features as a troupe of performing Arabs, with Turks, 3Ioors, Egyptians and Spaniards also in the ring, a sacred white elephant, a white hippopotamus, rerial bicyclists, roller skaters, trick elephants, and 3I'lle Aimee, the human fly, who walks head downward upon a board suspended at a height of fifty feet. Trained animals and wild beasts are to be seen in profusion, and every kind of entertaiument calculated to delight the human heart is to be found under Cole's monster canvas.

The press is unanimous in declaring it the best circus and menagerie on "the road. ATT Kn-fS ON. ES. The undersigned is prepared to do all kinds of rag carpet weaving. All kinds of carpet chain constantlyTon hand, and ready-made carpets for sale.

W. Sidlow, John Rapp, Pretton, R. E. Burnt. DODGE CITT TOWNSHIP We would say to the convention that therev.es no contest except in Bodge City, that there is a miiundcrstanding regarding the authority to call or fix the time for in said noting precinct, that concluding that the Republican Central Committee of said township has the authority.

They utterly failed to fix the time and prounlgatc the thing by publishing a notice in any newspaper or by posting printed or written circulars in cay place within the limits of eaid precinct, that the only evidence that thia committee has i a certificate attached to their credential, but promulgated published or otherwise made know to the Republican voter' of raid township. That the Republican commits of said township are generally of gross negligence to such a a extent that their acts convince your committee that their intention waa not to piomoto the interests of the Republican voters of taid tow nbhip; that no piopcr list of otcis v.us handed to jour committee. That a list compri-ing 135otes wan handed us, that the friends of said ticket concluded toyonr committee, upon examination made in presence of jpji committee, that said list contained the names of a large number of persons who openly afiilintedwith the Dsmocratic yartj, including delegates to the Democratic convention. That six of the hundred and thiriy-tix votes were cast for the delegation. That the delegation claiming seals in this convention by reason of said election as heard by P.

G. Reynolds. That the contesting delegation headed by G. S. Emerson claims to be elected by rcaton of one hundred and thirteen a otes cast in arothcr and different place without the authority pretended or real of any member of the Repablican cammittee save the chairman of the county committee, by a conversation had between baid chairman and one E.

D. Swan upen some points which said gentleman diflVr by reason of which conversation, the raid Swan caused the notices attached to these credentials .0 be published in the Times and Cow Boy of this city, which wa the only pretended authority, on hich raid ote-i v. ere cast. And hile our committee believe that many good Republicans -voted at both of said polls, jet by reason of the culpable negligence of members of said township committee in failing to designate any proper and they believe they had the power in ilxing the hoars in v. hici.

polls should open and cloe and giving prop-rand reasonable notice to the Rc-peblican voters when many different ways and means were in their power to use on the one hand, and the apparent intention to thwart the designs of the Central Committee on the other hand; no fair expression of the Republicans of said tow nsihip was had. We hereby transmit to the convention all papers delivered to us from any source for our consideration and recommend that neither of said delegations have seats or participate in this convention, all of which is respectfully submitted. A young man named Sheridan, who was herding for 3Ir. Peck, went in bathing, accompanied by 31 r. H. B. Dearth.

It seems that he could not swim and got beyond his depth and was drowned. 31r. Dearth made every endeavor to save him, and narrowly es caped drowning himself. Thc young man's father, Richard Sheridan, came up as soon as he heard of the sad affair. His stfn'sbody not recovered until 3Ionday morning, it being in sixteen feet of water.

The grief-stricken father passed here 3Iomday afternoon with his sorrowful burden, on the way to his home in Sterling township. Jetmore Reveille. The following interesting note in regard to the Texas cattle drive, we clip from the Cheyenne Transporter: "In regard to the number of cattle driven out of-Texas, a correspondent writing from Doan's Store, at Red river crossing of the Dodge City trail, says that up to a recent date there have crossed at that place 153 herds, containing 394,227 head, not counting horses. He has kept a record since '77 and says the smallest drive over this trail was in '79, when only 110,000 head crossed, aud the largest in '82, when 415,000 crossed. This alludes only.to the drive over the Dodge City trail." Screen doors and windows at the red front tinware store.
