And as tourists pack up to go back home, local business owners and officials are glad they came to make the summer of 1988 a profitable one.

"It appears that we had a very good summer as far as tourism is concerned," said Tom Purdum, New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce executive vice president. "Last year we experienced a drop and everybody was hurting," Purdum said. "I think this year has been just the opposite." Detective Richard Alvarez said Glenn A. McElroy, 28, and David A.

Quinn, 29 are wanted in the "April 17 burglaries, which occurred at Mission Valley Products in Saltier and Blowing Away Sports and Togs also in Saltier." Money and clothing were taking in the two burglaries'. The two men are currently.behind bars in the Nueces County Jail with 11 counts of burglary each. Each count carries a $25,000 bond, Alvarez said. men may also be responsible for several other burglaries in Comal County on April 17, Alvarez said. "But it's still under investigation." The method of operation was the same the burglaries.

Alvarez said he was notified by the Port Aransas Police Department that McElroy and Quinn had admitted to the burglaries in the Canyon Lake area. The comrm'ssion was notified this week of selection for a $49,000 grant from the Alamo Area Council Governments through the Governor's Criminal Justice Division. Funds will be used to hire a director and operate an office. The grant application was sent to the AACOG offices in San Antonio in April and was approved by two boards representing the council.

The application was then sent to Austin where it was approved by the governor. "We're real said Ann Bartholomew, chairman of the commission. "We're going to have same good programs." As a stipulation to receiving the funds, the commission must contribute 52,321 for equipment necessary to run an office.

Nelson Wayne 30, of Rt. 7, Box was arrested Thursday for two' people on various from 3 to Aug. 20, said detective Gordon Lilleux. The threats started after Mahan had apparently performed some work for the two victims, he said.

"Basically there was a disagree- ment that (Mahan) had about some work that he had done for the two victims some construction work on their residence," Lilleux said. "He initially said that they still owed him some money, but he hadn't completed the work he was contracted to do," he said. Mahan damaged three vehicles with a club and harassed the victims by Lilleux said. "He also threatened to run over the victims with his car, or injure them bodily." Local store ready for telethon pledges Police report quiet holiday By STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS New Braunfels "law enforcment officials reported a quiet Labor Day weekend as of Saturday night. The Department of Public Safety has estimated that as many as 35 lives in Texas will be lost before the fatality count ends at midnight Monday. The tally began at 6 p.m; Friday. Last year, 26 people died in Texas traffic accidents over the Labor Day holiday weekend. A teen-age pedestrian was the first fatality Saturday in the long Labor Day weekend traffic death count conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS spokesman Mike Cox said Kathy Lynn Baylor, 16, died at 1:15 a.m. Saturday when she was struck by a motorhome as she tried to cross Interstate 40 in Amarillo. Just one fatality in the first 16 hours of the 78-hour reporting period was unusual, said Cox. He said usually at night there are more accidents for a variety of reasons. Ranger takedown Each holiday has its traditions and Labor Day is no exception.

The Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon has been raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for many years. IGA Foodliner will serve as the New Braunfels site to receive telephone pledges and donations during the annual telethon. Phone 629-4232 to help Jerry's Kids. Under the direction of Hank Mulkey, local MDA chairman, the pledge center at IGA Foodliner will be staffed from 8 p.m. Sunday until 2 a.m.

Monday and 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday. "We're looking forward to this event," said Mulkey. "We know the good people of New Braunfels will unite and help up with our fight against the people-wasting disease." The telethon may be seen live on KENS-TV from San Antonio and Las Vegas.

MDA is a nationwide health agency which funds extensive patient service and research programs throughout the world for those afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy, a disease characterized by a progressive wasting of the muscles, and related disorders. Democrat getting in campaign gear Democrat John Curtis is busy getting his campaign into gear' this weekend as he seeks the Comal County Attorney's position. Curtis, 36, and his wife, Susan will at Honey Creek for a function Sunday to meet with the citizens of Comal County. Curtis says his main qualification for the position is his experience in criminal law. His practice, which is located at 260 N.

Castell deals with about 50 percent criminal law and the other 50 percent is family law. Another asset Curtis says he has experience with annual budgets. "I have some innovative proposals to save the county some money." Curtis, who refers to himself as a candidate of the people, moved to New Braunfels 10 years ago. He has two children. "I feel like I want to repay Comal County for some of the blessings I've gotten," Curtis said, explaining his reasons for running.

"There is a certain satisfaction you get from protecting the public. There were no reports of injuries or deaths, officials said.

On the Gulf Coast, Tropical Storm Debby dumped heavy rains on the Tuxpan-Pantepec River, ft flooded about 5,000 homes Saturday and forced the evacuation of about 30,000 people in the town of Alamo, Red Cross officials said. Dehby, the first hurricane of the 1988 Atlantic season, had broken up by Saturday morning, weather officials said. "Approximately 30,000 are affected, some 5,000 homes are com- pletely under water," said Enrique Estrada, head of the Red Cross in the Gulf Coast city of Tuxpan. Alamo, a coffee-producing town of about 40,000, is 25 miles (40 tons) inland from Tuxpan in the state of Veracruz. Estrada said residents were evacuated to schools and office buildings 8M STORM, 24.
