David Paltzik, vice president and general manager of the park, said he was the first person here to ride the Ultra Twister. "I loved it," Paltzik said. "It was a bigger thrill than we expected." He said a prototype was built in Japan, by the manufacturers.

Six Flags engineers traveled there to study the design and make modifications, including slowing down the conveyer belt on the loading platform and expanding the safety harnesses to accommodate larger people. Some people consider this fun. "I like it," said Kathy Herring, Quakertown, as she stepped off the ride. "But it should have gone faster. Tim Struby, Pelham, N.Y., said he visits Great Adventure every year, and was excited about trying out the new ride. "It was worth it," he said.

"Going straight up is wild." Richard Hallahan, also of Pelham, also thought he enjoyed the ride. "Spinning in it was new," he said. Sylvia Guest, Queens, N.Y., looked apprehensive as she boarded Ultra Twister with Sheldon Trotman, Middletown, N.Y. But Ms. Guest was smiling a few minutes later when she stepped off.
