D8 Asbury Park Press Tuesday. April 28, 1992 Giants Jets Bengals select Keyport's Earle From page Dl Bengal and we'D see you in Every -time the phone rang my heart beat a little faster. When I got the call, it was like a 25-pound weight was lifted off my shoulder." Although Earle played center out his collegiate career, he may be con- verted to right tackle with the Bengals, who finished a woeful 3-13 last season. "McNally liked my versatility," said Earle. "They drafted me on my athletic ability.

1 think I can be very versatile and -play all positions on the offensive line." PRESS STAFF REPORT IT TOOK nearly 28 hours, but the dream finally came true for John Earle. Earle, a 6-5, 285-pound center from Western Illinois and a 1987 graduate of Keyport High School, was selected in the 11th round of the NFL draft yesterday by the Cincinnati Bengals. "I'm ecstatic," said Earle, who was the 283rd player chosen. "Their offensive line coach, Jim McNally, called me around 2:25 p.m. and said, 'We're glad to have you as a i for their size and blocking, certainly not for their talent or receiving skills.

i But Sunday's selection served to underscore the fact that the Jets are beyond the point of just making do. Beginning with Pete Lammons, who 'came to the club in 1966, their tight ends have enjoyed a rich heritage, until recently that is. After Lammons departed in 1971, Jerome Bar-kum (1972-83) emerged and ended up catching .326 passes, fifth on the Jets' all-time list. So they brought Mitchell to town for the first "time yesterday and presented him with a green 'and white jersey with a No. 83 on it, much like they probably did 20 years earlier with Barkum, the last tight end taken by the Jets in the first round.

Now Mitchell is being asked to re-ignite the flame and help a middle-of-the road club continue its upward climb. At least he'd better. Should Steinberg's draft miss the mark the conse-'. quences could be as disastrous as the draft of 87, which they're still trying to recover from. No player from that draft is still with the team.

What makes the situation so urgent this year is the fact that five of the top 13 players in the draft landed in the AFC East. There won't be 'many more 1-15 seasons the one win coming over the Jets for Indianapolis if defensive tackle Steve Emtman and linebacker Quentin the first two players taken, live up to their potential. The overhaul of the Miami defense has begun, with the Dolphins getting cor-nerback Troy Vincent (No. 7) and defensive end "Marco Coleman (No. 12), while New England By the way, the Bills will be going for a fifth straight AFC East crown this year.

Needs were filled time and time again over the past two days. An emphasis was placed on linebacker, where second-round outside linebacker Kurt Barber has a chance to make an immediate impact. Inside linebacker Keo Coleman came in the fourth round followed by Glenn Cadrez, an outside guy in the sixth who was an undersized defensive end at Houston. Troy Taylor's days with the Jets may be dwindling after they traded up with Denver in the sixth round for East Carolina quarterback Jeff Blake. They may feel Taylor's never going to get much better and so why not try Blake, who has a very strong arm.

The addition of third-rounder Siupeli Mal-amala, who can play guard or tackle, is a move aimed at adding depth along the line, but it would sure be a plus if he could push for a starting job. The key to it all, however, is Mitchell, and there are plenty of reasons why he should succeed. In addition to his size (6-4, 260, although he claims his playing weight is closer to 240) and speed (4.63), his formative years were spent working on his grandparents farm in rural Mississippi, giving him a strong work ethic. But there are just as many reasons for him to fail, like the fact that he played just two years of college football at Nebraska and his lack of blocking skills have come up. Shuler was released, in part, because Coslet places such emphasis on his tight ends blocking, so he'll have to be a quick learner since anything other than his name in the starting lineup this season will be a disappointment.

Is Mitchell the second coming of Kellen Win-slow? Probably not, but he has a chance to become a productive starter at a position the Jets desperately need help at, just like all of their picks in the first four rounds. But in 1997, if the Colts are at the top of the division, check the draft of 1992 and you'll know why. Stephen Edelson is an Asbury Park Press staff writer. From page Dl "I try to put the Howard thing in the best light," said Giants' coach Ray Handley. "Every time Washington throws to Howard, they won't be throwing to Gary Clark.

"It sure looks like Dallas helped themselves. They took a few people we liked a whole lot and Philadelphia seems to have gotten the runners they wanted. It looks like everybody's helped themselves." The Giants entered the draft in a no-win, no-lose situation. With so many needs, there was no way they were going to fill them all. On the other hand, with so many needs, they were almost certain to get some help out of the draft.

The Giants needed to fill voids at tight end, on the defensive line and in the secondary. Nine of their first 10 picks were used to bolster these areas. Unfortunately, they ignored their needs at linebacker and made only a token effort at finding a quarterback for the future. With the departure of Mark Bavaro, the Giants had only nominal production out of the tight end position last year. This year, with the additions of No.

1 pick Derek Brown (Notre Dame) and No. 3 pick Aaron Pierce (Washington), tight end could suddenly be one of the stronger units on the team. Brown and Pierce are almost certain to join Howard Cross on the roster, leaving Zeke Mowatt in the cold. "I look at the three tight ends we have now and I can't help but think of the 1990 Super Bowl, when we had Bavaro, Cross and (Bob) Mrosko working so well on the field at the same time," Handley said. Another draftee with an excellent shot of making the roster is cornerback Phillippi Sparks.

Sparks, who excelled at Arizona State, will compete to play opposite Mark named the Big East co-defensive player of the year in 1991. Quantity doesn't always mean quality. Two years ago, the Giants used their second, third, ninth, 10th and 11th round picks on defensive linemen, but only reserve end Mike Fox survives from that group. The Giants wanted to draft a quarterback, but were thwarted at every turn. They were prepared to trade up to get Houston's David Klingler, but were shocked when the Cincinnati Bengals grabbed him at the No.

6 spot, They then turned their attention to UCLA's Tommy Maddox, who they projected as a mid-second rounder. Maddox went surprisingly high, going to the Denver Broncos with the 25th pick of the draft. The third quarterback on the Giants' wish list was Virginia's Matt Blundin. It appeared that Blundin would be available in the second round, but the Kansas City Chiefs made i a last-minute trade with the Minnesota Vikings and took Blundin on the pick before the Giants. The Giants finally got around to taking a quarterback in the eighth round, selecting Ohio State's Kent Graham, who has NFL size (6-5, 232), but little else.

Jon Gelberg is an Asbury Park Press siafj writer. "hi Collins. Last year, the Giants were disappointed in the play of cornerbacks Everson Walls, Perry Williams, Roger Brown and Reyna Thompson. To further solidify the secondary, the Giants snared two Washington State cornerbacks, Michael Wright in the fifth round and Anthony Prior in the ninth. Prior is also a skilled kick returner, having averaged 24.1 yards per return last year.

The Giants ignored defensive line needs until the fourth round. The Giants wanted a pass rushing defensive end, and may have gotten a good one in the fourth round in Keith Hamilton (6-5, 279) of Pittsburgh. Hamilton had 27Vz sacks in his career, but he has had knee problems. Stacy Dillard, the team's sixth-round pick, is a defensive tackle with pass rushing skills. Dillard (6-5, 289) led Oklahoma with seven sacks last year.

In the seventh round, the Giants tabbed Corey Widmer, who put up big numbers at a small program. Widmer (6-2'2, 277), had 35 sacks in his four years at Montana State. The Giants took their fourth defensive lineman in the 10th round, grabbing Syracuse defensive tackle George Rooks (6-3V2, 275). Rooks had 15Vi sacks in his career and was went after a need with tackle Eugene Chung Don't forget, while Mike Hickey was striking -out in the draft five years ago, the Buffalo Bills Twere picking up Shane Conlon, Nate Odomes, I Leon Seals, Howard Ballard and Keith McKeller. rr )' 4- i I) saaeaaaaBaMas 318 STORAGESERVICE 318 STORAGESERVICE 318 STORAGESERVICE 318 STORAGESERVICE 308 BOATSPOWER 3s BOATSPOWER 308 BOATSPOWER 314 CANOES ROWBOATS SELLING OR BUYING?
