1 TRIP OF THE WEEK State forest gets its name from 200-year-old legend AMINE ZATZ Press Correspondent Jenny Jump State Forest, Hope Township iZ Jinny 03 J'iZS (Tso) Enrol I J. -SI Newark ha, tf again and follow the gravel road to sites 10 and 1 1 where you'll turn left along the Swamp trail, past site 11, back to the car. Should you want to camp here, there are two camp shelters and seven campsites. Wood is sold at the office, but remember to bring an ax for chopping and splitting. Camp shelters are fully enclosed, weather-tight buildings with fireplace-type stoves for heating and outdoor fireplaces for cooking and bunk accommodations for four people, while camp sites have spaces for tents, tables with benches, fireplaces, toilets and water.

The views are magnificent from many of the forest roads and trails. On clear days, facing west, the view of the Kittatinny Valley goes on almost forever from Wind Gap, for 20 miles southwest to the highest peak in High Point State, some 30 miles north. Another fine view to the east includes old Silver Mine Valley. and fabulous views all year. Stop at the visitors' office for a map of the park.

If it's closed, drive to the first parking lot you come to, park and walk uphill to the red-blazed trail Turn right after a few yards. On the right side of the trail is a picnic table beside a large rock outcrop. At the fork, turn right onto Summit Trail. Next you'll come to a lovely vista 1,090 feet atop the Kittatinny Mountain Ridge. With beautiful stretches of farmland below you, it's a great spot to sit and relax.

Continue straight along the ridge following the white-blazed trail, heading downhill. It's sometimes difficult to follow the blazes, so keep each in sight Should you lose your way, reverse direction until you've spotted the last one before proceeding. In about IS minutes you'll reach the bottom. Here the trail eventually comes to a dead end at a grassy trail. Turn here for the return.

At group site within the camp ground, turn left HOPE TOWNSHIP While her father worked clearing the land, Jenny busied herself picking berries near the edge of a cliff. Suddenly Jenny's father heard strange sounds. Noticing Indians creeping through the forest toward her with tomahawks raised, and unable to aid his little girl, he yelled, "Jump, Jenny, Jump!" She did unfortunately right off the mountain top. At least that's what Swedish missionary Sven Roseen wrote in his diary in 1747, explaining how Jenny Jump Mountain got its name. Even if the story is true, it's now safe to visit Jenny Jump State Forest because the Indians left the area a long time ago.
