B22 Asbury Park PressThursday, October 30, 1986 Actor gives time, services to hospital Firm buys Hispanic TV station The Associated Press 4' -A The Associated Press PEMBERTON TOWNSHIP Six-month-old Stephanie Streep had open-heart surgery last week, but the story her parents will tell her when she's older happened yesterday. That's when performer Ben Vereen visited her at Deborah Heart and Lung Center, picked her up and kissed her on the forehead. Vereen's visit to the hospital came while the touring company of "Pippin'," a children's show, was in Wilmington, Del. Vereen, who is in "Pippin," recently filmed radio and television public service announcements for the hospital and wanted to see the beneficiary of his volunteer work, said hospital spokeswomen. The 30-sccond announcement called "Let's Work Together" recently has been broadcast in Pennsylvania, Florida, California and other states, said spokeswoman Lorraine Ryan.

WW A3 100. II NEWARK The sale of WNJU-TV to a unit of Reliance Group guarantees the New York area's top Spanish-language station will continue to serve its Hispanic audience, station and company officials said yesterday. WNJU was sold to Reliance Capital Group despite two recent, higher offers from companies without a major interest in Spanish programming, said Station Manager and President Carlos Barba.

The company announced Tuesday that Reliance Capital has agreed to acquire WNJU-TV (Channel 47) for $70 million. The station joins three other Spanish stations in what is shaping up as the nation's second Spanish network. WNJU, with 4.8 million viewers and the oldest Spanish-language station in the country, is owned by a group headed by producer Norman Lear, Bud Yorkin and A. Gerald Per-enchio. If the deal is approved by the Federal Communications Commission, Reliance would soon own four Spanish stations: KVEA-TV in Los Angeles, and soon-to-be acquired WSQV-TV in Miami and WKAQ-TV in San Juan.

If the deals are completed, Reliance would have a stake in the three largest Hispanic markets in the country. Barba said WNJU had two offers in the past six months from "major entertainment conglomerates" not specializing in Spanish television, for 10 to 15 percent more than Reliance Capital's offer. He refused to identify them, but said they were based in Los Angeles and New York. "If an Anglo station bought (WNJU), it might turn to English," Barba said. "We thought it was best for the station to be an important part of this new network," he said.

Spanish-language broadcasting in the United States is dominated by the SIN Television Network and 10 other stations in the process of being acquired by Hallmark Cards which has promised to maintain their Spanish programming. Henry R. Silverman, president of Reliance Capital, said that once his company completed the deals for the stations, they would develop programs jointly and have common advertising sales representation. He said they would be joined by at least one affiliate, WCIU-TV, Chicago. "We believe that Spanish-language television is the fastest growing of the television industry," he said.

Firm, official convicted in spill coverup The Associated Press NEWARK A nuclear irradiation company and its former vice president were convicted yesterday by a federal jury of covering up a spill of radioactive water and ordering employees to flush it down bathroom drains into the local sewer system. After deliberating for six hours, the U.S. District Court jury convicted International Nutronics Inc. and Eugene T. O'Sullivan, 61, of San Jose, on nine counts of conspiracy, mail and wire fraud, and violations of Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations.

The jury acquitted the manager of the San Jose-based company's Dover plant, Bruce J. Thomas, 33, of Somer-villc. Prosecutors said the company masked the amount of radiation released in the December 1982 accident by chiseling holes in the walls and floors, filling them with lead wool and painting over them. Other measures taken to conceal the spill included placing liver meal along the building's walls and directing employees to alter the way they wore their radiation detection badges so the devices would record lower dosages, prosecutors alleged. The company irradiated organic products such as liver meal for dog food to destroy bacteria, and certain semi-precious gems to enhance their color.

O'Sullivan faces up to 39 years in prison and $26,000 in fines at his sentencing Dec. 4 before U.S District Judge Herbert J. Stern. James M. Weinberg, O'Sullivan's lawyer, said he would appeal.

"This is an incorrect result as far as I'm concerned," Wicnberg said. Jacqueline WolIT, assistant U.S. attorney, said that under the legal definition, O'Sullivan could be guilty of conspiracy even though Thomas was acquitted. Authorities said the spill occurred when a filter pump connected to the pool of water containing the cobalt used in irradiation was allowed to run unsupervised overnight, in violation of NRC regulations. That caused radioactive water to spill onto the floor, and employees were instructed to carry the contaminated water in buckets and pour it down the plant's bathroom drain, prosecutors alleged.

The company then delayed an NRC inspection and carried out the concealment efforts, prosecutors said.
