DONALD J. SMITH, passed away Monday, March 13, at St. Barnabas Hospice Palliative Care Center, Long Branch, surrounded by his large family. He was 73 and died after battling Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) for nearly four years. Donald was born in Ridgewood on Jan.

18, 1933, son of Howard and Emily Smith. He attended prep school at The Lawrenceville School for three years, but due to illness, returned home to Ridgewood, where he graduated from Ridgewood High School in June 1951. However, his years at the Lawrenceville School had a tremendous impact on his life and his views on education. He felt that the school literally saved his life and he credited it with his later business successes. Since he would have graduated in 1951, he felt a close bond with his classmates and kept in touch through the alumni association.

He had hoped to attend the upcoming 55th reunion of the class of '51. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1955, and later attended graduate school at Stanford's College of Business Administration. After his marriage to Lenore in June 1972, the couple resided with their extended family in Chatham Township until they moved to Plainsboro. In 1985, while living in Chatham, Donald became very active coaching youth sports i including PAL football and Little League baseball. It was during this time that his talent for mentoring brought him tremendous popularity and devotion that was to continue for the rest of his life.

This manifested itself not only through coaching, but also in the business world and his interest in education. His wife Lenore noted that "Don's destiny was to be a mentor, and one he fulfilled magnificently, as evidenced by the tremendous outpouring of love during his battle with Lymphoma. His loving devotion was the force that enabled us to function as one united family over these many years." During his business career, he became involved in the design of pension plans and developed the country's first prototype small business pension program, working with the Brooklyn and Newark IRS Pension Divisions. "It was a helluva good idea," he noted in an interview. "Before that time, it cost small companies several thousand dollars to start up pension plans.

With my prototype plans, small companies could start a plan for about $800. It was a revolutionary idea." In 1975, Don left the banking industry to start his own company, Lendon focused on developing and implementing pension plans for small businesses. He later sold his business to the large insurance brokerage firm Fred S. James, where he continued his career. Fred S.

James was subsequently acquired by the Segal Company, where Don worked until his retirement in 1994. Donald and Lenore enjoyed traveling and in 1981 purchased land in the Dominican Republic, where they built their home in Playa Cofresi. This became their second home over the years where they were able to enjoy the winter months upon their retirement from the business world in 1996. Surviving are Lenore Smith, his wife who shared his life for 37 years; her five children; his four children by three prior marriages and a foster daughter from Poland. These family members include Donald's children, Mark Smith and his wife Karen of Tucson Bradford Smith and his wife Christina of Ventura Courtney Smith of Santa Barbara, and Patricia Smith and her partner Christina Lissome of Matawan; stepchildren, Ted Smith and his wife Cornelia of Pittstown, Judy Ragoza of Summit, Cynthia Charters and her husband John of Needham, Rick Ragoza and his wife Lucy of Westfield, and Michael Ragoza and his wife Jeanine Pennell of Hillsborough; and his foster daughter, Joanna Dzunek de Jong and her husband Menno of the Netherlands.

He also has 14 loving grandchildren. Visiting will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the O'Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall. Funeral will be 10 a.m.

Friday from the funeral home, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass at Ascension Roman Catholic Church, Bradley Beach. Committal will follow at St. Catharine's Cemetery, Sea Girt. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad Shrewsbury, or the Leukemia Society, Donor Services, PO Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202..
