Stevens, 27-12, for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Central Jersey Group IV state title, a potent passing game was responsible. Yes, a passing game. All year long, the Lions offensive strategy had been focused around a strong running game.

However, after North's loss to Middletown South in the regular season finale, head coach Don Ayers was forced to make some adjustments. Enter senior quarterback Dave Sheehan. Sheehan emerged as the versatile North team leader. Not only was he the starting quarterback, he was the punter and a defensive back. The Asbury Park Press Athlete of the Week virtually never missed a down.

It was on defensive that Sheehan played his best ball. He had six interceptions this season. His leadership in the secondary helped the team to a 7-2-i record. "He is a real tough kid," Ayers said. "He made the plays down field he had to make.

He's a good athlete and he was a smart football player with good reaction." ti This reaction proved to be the best part of his game, and one which constantly improved. However, at the quarterback position, Sheehan was still an untapped resource. I Due to a preseason injury in which he suffered a broken bone in his right throwing hand, Sheehan had difficulty much of the year handling snaps from center as well as throwing accurately to his receivers. The raw strength he possessed throwing the ball, a talent which he used last year and plans on using this year on the Middletown North baseball diamond, soon lead only to frustration. "I couldn't really throw," he said.

"We were always handing off." The handoffs went mostly to the strong running duo of John Fardclla and Rich Toland, and although productive, it left the offense limited. "It hurt for him not to practice full season," Ayers said. "But as the season went on he got better and better." By season's end, the combination of reaction, athletic skills, smartness and a rapidly healing right hand meant only good things for the Lions. As Sheehan's hand got better, so did the offense. Being able to throw meant more room for the running attack.

"He really grew up and matured as Ayers said. "He has a strong arm, but he scrambled when had to, and read coverages and receivers much better.
